CORRES- PONDENCE, jeanrers FourtH New York Cavarry, Pay Cuarut, Va., Dec. 21, 1861. } of Virginia in the Vicinity of Our Camps—The New York Cavalry—Colonel Dickels’ Regiment—Narrow Becape of His Wife During a Skirmish at the Outposts— The Accommodations for the Soldiers—A Private Buried tna Cornjfiell—Rumors of a Battle—A Ourious Pair of Spurs—The Weather, de. ‘When I last wrote to you it was from a point nearly two thousand miles distant from New York city, Sinco ‘thon I have roved considerably, and am now employed in making 4 private reconnoissance over the ‘sacred soil,” the greater portion of which affords, at present, the ap- pearance of having boon overrun by cohorts of locusts and woodchoppers. Fields present the aspect of perma- ; houses are, unless within the limits of scamp, entirely Aeserted, and whero heavy woods were ‘once to be beheld, only avast sweep of land, plentifully besprinkled by ghastly looking stumps of trees, greots the twithstauding these mournful evidences of the devastations of war, the part of the State fm which Iam now writing furnishes the eye with many rugged beauties of nature, and almost countless absorb- fog pictures of active military life, As far as one can Yook from the highest eiminences are seen the various camps, the streets and lines of tents boing dotted here ‘and there in picturesque confusion, and giving the beholder @ vivid idea of so many towns built of pyramiis of snow. ‘Wherever you go the roll of the drum, bugle calls, the @loquent music of full brass bands, the voices of drill officers giving the word of command, the noise of cannon, carbine and musket practice—these are almost entirely predominant ‘The camp from whenes I date this letter is occu- pied by the Fourth New York cavalry (New York Mounted Riles), under the command of Col. C. F. Dickel, and part of General Blonker’s division, But little has ‘been said in the public journals,I am told, concerning this regiment, and yet it is one of tho most effective of any yet sent out. It is quartered upon a piece of table Jand about five miles from the city of Washington, and fs really in a most eligible and enviable posi. tion, The camp is the most cleanly and comfort ablo in the vicinity, although itis surrounded by many others, a fine view of which it alurds from every quarter Of its limits. The men are about half composed of Ger. mana, the majority of whom have seen service in differ ent European cavalry corps, and understand all that be. Jongs to the equine arm of the military service. ‘There &re, nevertheless, two or three full companies or troops of Americans and English, and all of those, thinks to Stant and competent drill, have already become as clever ‘and useful soldiers as could be expected, | dwell th ticularly upon these truths, because, hitherto, very River any real attention bas been given in America to cavalry tactics, very sparse encouragement for the for- mation of mounted Vattalions, and even light wagons and ‘other whecled vehicles have generally been pre.erred to the saddie for purposes of pleasure riding. Yet, without ‘well drilled and organized cavalry—such as the Mounted Rifles and one or two other recent regimental formations of a similar character which are rapiliy coming into the Seld—so-called battles aro but skirmishes on a large scale. Many a hard fought battle has been won by a single charge of a few thoroughly disciplined horsemen. Gen. McClellan, aware of this, ‘has drawn very largely upon Colonel Dickel’s regiment for picket guards, and places ‘the men upon every outpost duty that may happen to extra hazardous and responsible. Th We 8 far nobly Sustained the honorable position thus assigned to thein. Anotable circumstanco recently occurred to Mr. aud Mrs. Dickel; and, a8 both are well known in New York, it not be amiss to state the principal points thereof. Mra. Dickel paid her husband a visit in camp on Monday fast, and Tuesday, being a beautiful day, the Colonel concluded to give his judy @ trip to Anaudale church, where a detachment of his men had formed an advance — on the lines, the infantry lying behind. When ero ho proceeded to explain the diiferent peri. tions of the forces to her, and while doing so observed that some of his troopers commenced to move in circle to tho left. Skirmishers are instructed to make this movement whenever they see anything they do not understand or that seems dang:r- ous. It appears that they sawa body of the enemy a short distance off, and, aiter making the above move- ment’splendidly , advanced, exchanged about twenty shots with the seceshers, and then retired to report to their ‘Pespective officers, TheColonel and his lady stood near Anandale church during the firing, the enemy sending about a.dozen twelve pound rifle cannon shot without of- fect. Mrs. Dickel stood it very well until the fourth shot ‘was fired. This passed about ten feet directly over her bead, and, striking a tree about afoot in diamcter, dash- @d it into fragments. Tho shot isan ugly looking ecstom- er, and would leave but & small retuuant of any object against which it might be projected. I do not wonder ‘that Mrs. Dickel suddenly found it convenient to assure the Colonel that she had seen quite enough of fighting, and toask him the question, ‘Hadu’t we better go homer? A far sample of the recreations hereabouts, By the way, J think the government could make a great improvement in the sleeping accommodations of its sol- diers. It is no Joke for five men to lie down upon the ground im a tent desigued for only two. Five in one of these canvass tents, with their knapsucks, accoutrements, Kitchen utensils, &c., leave very jittle spare room, J as’ sure you, and how the poor fellows manage to dret wash, shave, &c., without walking over each oth mystery I cannot account for. The officers fare a trifle Detter in this respect; but it is nothing to makea fuss about. Ithink many of them feel the loss of their former luxurious hotel accommodations very sensibly; but ‘the gory bed of glory’ musi always be preceded by the bed of hay and ‘the single army bianket, Al- though the men, not only in this camp but in others bereabouts, are choerful and generaily healiby,1 think thelr spirits and physical condition would exhibit a ma- Werial improvement if our Washington folk would con- descend to care for them with more kindiiuett, Anothor point claims a passiog remark. ently left for weeks without arms. Kor instance, the ‘djutant of the Mounted Rifles tells me that they hid 19 do the severest kind of ontpest duty, exposed to the sane, (MMinent peril, at best with only ton sabres and uo carbines, They are g2 Well supplied, only tho new comers being deticient. During the weck we have buried one private. His BAme was F. Dains,a Philadelphian by birth, but re- eruited in Néw York, where he has friends. The grave ‘was dug by his comrades at the extremity of what had ‘once been a corn! upon General Leo's property, and there, with appropriate solemnities, the body was te- porited; but to remain how long who can tell?” There is Something awful in a military funeral out in comp. Nine months ago. the tillers of Uhat cornfield did not dream that it would be converted intoa graveyard, with the mourners for the dead in full uniform and abmed with deacly weapons, aud not a civilian to witness the core monic: There are rumors this morning that wo are to have another severe skirmish near Bailey's Cross Roads w-day or to-morrow.
