The company comprises Mossi Hilt, Marlowe, Hinde, Wall, Mrs. Alexina Fisher Baker, Mrs. Thayor, Mrs. FS. Chanfrau and Mrs. Marlowe. On yesterday the management had the pleasure of im- viting attention to the flattering opinions of several of the leading journals of CLARKE’S OODLES, CLARKE’S TOODLES. To-day tho management desire to annex the following re- markable criticisms of the New York Tribune:— Mr. John 8. Clarke, who played but a single brief on- gagement in this city since his name rose from the undte- Unguished level of the stock company, did not, at the time of that engagement, enact this character, but ap- peared in it on Mouday night for the first time hore. ‘That his success was fully as great as in anyother of his per- sonations is saying, perbaps, too little, for to many ‘“ileo- diea’’ is the best of all his efforts since we have knows him in Now York. He was received by an audience gratifying as to num- bers, and eminently complimentary as to enthusiasm. $8 favorably were they impressed with the efforts of the young actor that he was twice called back after his exit, in the middle of a scene, to receive the complimentary cheers of the house—a high favor, go seldom accorded te rf that he should mark its occurrence with the of white stones in lis calendar of bright and . Lewis Baker, Bartow ys. lending characteristic of Mr. Clarke’s performance of Toodles dese: special and most commendable notes. 1t is his careful avoidance of everything that might seous to be an imitation of any of the illustrious comedians who have before acted the part. Ho espegially most sta- diously avoids the peculiar and well known ‘stage busi- ness" with which Mr. Burton was wont to set the whole thoatre in.a roar, and thus, by hia own voluntary act, de- bars himself the iL of cortain never failing “points,” in which he could scarcely have failed to be inimitabig funny. ‘The severe extent of this deprivation can only ba rightly understood and perfectly comprehended in all tte force by those who are intimate with the technicalities of stage performances, but it cannot fail to greatly eahanoe the reputation of an actor who shows himself 80 strictly conscientious ag to sacrifice applause—that dearcst trea sure of an actor's heart—to strict and severe originality. Mr. Clarke might doubtless make Toodles funnier than now he does, were he content to be less of a true artist and more of a mere mimic. In this, as in all his other personations, the distinguish ing quality of his acting isa careful regard for what te simply natural. Though ‘“Toodles,’’ as delineated by the author, is very high! ly colored, ‘and, perbaps, entirely overdrawn, still Mr. Clarke contrives to invest it with & naturalness that almost would clear the author from the charge of exaggeration. ‘The great feature of the play is considered to be a cor- tain drunken scene, wherein the hero, by stage tradition, is, on sufferance, permitted to say and do almost ang- thing that will provoke a laugh; and, of course, this pri- vilege has been frequently availed of to excuse anticw that the drunkenest of all drunken men could never have found it possible to perpetrate. Mr. Clarke has changed all th His drunk is a natural drunk—one that is instantly recognized as genuine by & discriminating preponderance of the male beholders. Ho is drunk in the legs, the knees, in the heels, im the hands, and not_me1 he preposterous necktie, the absurd hat, or the thumbless gloves. His inebriety comes upconsciously out in the unsteadiness of the head, the top- Piness of the neck, the thickness of the voice, the spas- Modic attempt to conceal the betraying hiccup, and is ne’ morely artificially forced upon the eye, in the elaborately out of place necktie, the coat so carefully buttoned in the wrong place, the pautaloons 60 ostentatiously tucked out- side the boots, the hat systematically set over one our, or the gloves so nover failingly drawn upon the wrong hands. Ta fact, this description would distinguish Mr. Clarke's drunken scene trom that of all mere imitators of a fore- gone model—it is an inebriety of the man, the brain, the body, aud the limbs, and not a feigned intoxication simply of the outer individual, set forth by a studied and artificial disarrangement of the boots and breeches. {From tho New York Evening Express. Mr. J.8. Clarke, whose success @ few months ago was 80 remarkable, reappeared last evoning, The programme included “The Rough Idamond” and ‘Tho Toodios,”’ im both of which this young actor proved himself a man of coasummate comic genius, The comparison with Burtos in the character of Toodles was course, inevitable, and higher praise could hardly be offered to Mr. Clarke. than to say that this comparison was not unfavorable to hi His conception is decidedly original, but by ao Maeans, ferlor to that of | the. great comedian tore Created the part; while his rondoring fl fees. unctuous, wes mdee delicately sbicled, meee’ eatarca with all its fun, and decidedly free from that coarsencas which detracted from the morit of Burton’s best pornoa: etions. bir.
