THE CENTRAL PARK. was completely covered with the soft and brilliantly white carpet, dotted here and there with a little dark green from the fir trees, or a dirty drab from some pro- truding rock. On every side the glistening, glit- termg white met the view. The pond also was Dlanc- and dreary, not having been swept after the late snow storm. The paths for pe- destrians had been very nicely cleared from snow, and forty-five thousand persons took advantage of the charming weather to take a stroll. But the great scene of the day wus on the drive. Two thousand two hundred and fifty sleighs were counted as having entered the Park up to tive o’clock, and the ‘life on the road” was life pone Based seen ie the Observatory hill, dur- ine the afternoce, », perfect moving panorama sented to the view. was a fine shell-like was re ‘drawn by a two-forty horse, which seemed to be restless of the restraint that compelled him only to travel at the rate of “seven miles an hour,” and there a richly deco- rated double sieigh, whose motive power was a team of dashing greys. in another place could be seen the ordinary milk sleigh of the rouser of the morning echoes, tilled with females and children, and driven by the “noisy fellow” himself, closely’ fol- lowed bya black and gilded vehicle on runners, almost hidden under the load of skins, in which Teposed a sweet damsel with brilliant black eyes and ringlets, while her loving swain held the reins which guided the restive steeds. Next was a double sleigh, in eich half a dozen formed a pretty party, who chattod and laughed as they were driven briskly along. Soon after came the box of a wagon, which had been hastily put upon run- ners s0 as to allow the storekeeper an opportunity to give his family a sleigh ride in the Park before the season broke up. Now came a couple of fast youths, who, not content with one hore and @ cutter, must, forsooth, drive tandem; and close behind followed a’ splendid well matchea’ Maltese four- ‘in-hand, in front of an ele- gantly equi sleigh. In fact, turn which way you would, sieighs of all kinds, qnalities and sizes were pre- sented to the view, interspersed here and there with some vehiele on wheels in the shape of a close carriage, barouche or buggy looking much out of place. As for the shape of the dash boards of the sleighs and cutters a greater variety could scarcely have been seen ata mu- seum. They were straight, 0. G., and rounded. The straight ones formed acute, right ‘and obtuse angles with the bottom of the yebicle; and the rounded ones bulged in and bulged out. Natural history was fear. fully outrs in the way of ornameats, for some had jided eagles’ heads, some red dogs’ heads, and some ragen heads of grifiins, The drivers were as various as the vehicles. Here were servants in livery, some black and some white, who seemed to glory in the number and brightness of their greaicoat buttons, and there was. a gentleman in an overcoat of the most approved style of. fashion. Furs and skins were in great , bot ‘on the ladies and on their vehicles. Bells were also plen- tifal, from the sonorous bass of the large brass bell to \the shrill ame ‘of the silver ditto, One party, who drove a spanking pair of black horses, had the animals covered with small silver-looking bells, over a thousand im number, which sent forth a rich and harmonious jingle. "he enow in the morning was well adapted forsleighing, | but not being of what is termed a “Packing” nature, was s00n effected by the heat of the sun and the number of vehicles, so that by about four e’clock in the afternoon the runners almost always scraped the gravel. In the Jevening, or rather us soon as the sun went down, the roads in the Park began to get better and better, and having bad a respite for some two hours, when ‘tho moon, which rose last night as round as’” a copper cent, speared, the man who is said to have there taken np his joked down upon many & merry party who chose to rere the Park by moonlight, some of whom obtained sleighs at the Central Park stable, near the entrance. Here the animags were driven at all the various rates of speed that can be gotten out of horsetiesh, and many, who did not “slack up” at the right moment, came fou! of a fellow traveller, and the occupants of the vehicles ‘got a spill.” Several sleighs were upset, and many 2 finely dressed damsel was to be seen embracing the ‘cold, cold gr-snow.’’ At the junction of the Eighth avenue and Broadway, where the railroad company had ‘been salting the track, severo! vehicles were broken, and more than one party was turned out into the dirty slush. At this point all through the season there bas been a miserable slough, to remedy which nuisance seems to be no one’s business, but to make it worse is certainly the usurped right of the railroad com- pany.
