Profes- vor Haddock was born at Salisbury (now Franklin), New Jampebire, io 1796. Hs father, William Haddock, was ® pative of Massachusetts, His mother was Abigail Wedeter, a favorite sister of Ezekiel and Daniel Webster. Mis chilchocd was chietly spent at Elms Farms, in the ompewn built by his father, afterwards the favorite resi- Aenee of his uncle, Daniel Webster. He graduated at Dartmouth College in 1816, und, afver devoting three years io the etady of theology, “was in 1819 appointed to the chair of Rhetoric and Belles Lettres in that ancient seat of learning, which he occupied until 1838, when be took that of Intellectual Philosophy and Political Feonomy ‘w toe came institution, which he held uati) 1851, In Wat ycar he left for Lisben to perform the duties of Charge de Affairs from the United States to Portugal, to which be was appointed by Mr. Fillmore. He did not re eume the active discharge of the duties of his professor- ship, except by occa tures before the classes; but while devoting himself inch to agri re i his charm- wg beme on the banks of the Connecticut, he found time to revise for ibe press a large portion of his writings, and to bring to a nearly finished state an agreeable work on Pervogal, which was first to be published in the pages of the Knickerbocker Magazine. The labors of our representative te the Court of 1 marily light, but Mr. Had- doek was never inactive. He was instrumental ia pro- curing the tariff to be removed from ice, and it's owing to bis independent stand that American vessels were per- mitted to load at St. Ubes on the same terms as Portu gues. While connected witb the college he was for four suc- cessive elections returned to the New Hampshire Legis iapore, where he introduce: and carried through th: sent cemmon schol system of this State, and wis the fret School Commissioner uncer it. He was the father of the railroad system in New Hampshire, h’s various speeches having the effect to change the policy of the State on the subject.
