NEW YORK HERALD, TUESDAY, °JANUARY 22 1861. Academy of Music. PTRat NIGHT OF THB OPERA SEASON. ‘notion is devoted entirely to the tilustration of the strug- pias of tbe prime donne, soprano and gontraito, for the fascinating tenor, with a jealous baritone as a relief to | the picture, The music recommends itself more espe- cially to the connoisseurs tuan to the gesoral public. We have in the first act a fine tenor romance aad a pretty chorus; in the second, » highly colored dramatic duet for the soprano and contralto; and, as the opera proceeds, morceasw d'ensemble become more and moro plentiful Viewed according to the Ginons of public taste—and, after all, that is the only safe rule for the critio—the “Giuramento”’ is to be con- sidored rathor as a medium for the display of the talent of the artists than as a troat for the audience. The per- formance of last night was quite perfect. The honors mvat be accorded to Madame Colson, whose rendering of Elias was ® great triumph. Since her provincial tour Madame Colson’s voice seems to have gained both in strength and volume, and her acting was superb. Evi- dently Madame Colson has given especial attention to this role, and bas made herself mistress of all its difficulties, which are numerous, and, to a tyro, insurmountable. Never has this prima douna—always a favorite here— acquitted herseif eo well as in this arduous rdle. Misa Philips sung the music of the contralto part, Blanca, exoeadingly well, and gave to Madame Colson the most efficient support. Brignoli was in his bost voloe, and seemed absolutely interested in his part. He sung very finely taienghout, Ferri was better than usual, and = is usually good. Musto conducted the orchestra, was excellent, This opera will be repeated to-night _ Brooklyn, and on Friday at our Academy. We have not ‘entered ihto a minute criticism upon it, because ita mor- Coaue are known to every one who is familiar with the modern Italian repertire. The of 80 elabo- rate @ work deserves the especial attention of the mu- sical padlic. On Wednesday, at the Academy, Miss a will make ber debut in “Imcia di Lammermoor.” Miss Hinckley is a New Yorker, eduosted abroad, a tho- roughly weil taught musician, and, it is aaid by the most rental Judges, the very best singer of ail ‘Aunort can prima donne. Joined to a splendid soprano voice, Mus ?Hinckiey posseswes parsonal attractions of a high ‘order, and it is proaicted that her American careor will be a most successful one. The public of the metropolis should give Mist Hinckiey a full and fair hearing. Eawin Booth at Winter Garden. Mr. Booth commenced a new ongagemont at Winter Gardou last night, at which honge he has recently played with great success for a short season, He opened his fresh earees a8 Brutus, in John Howard Payne's tragedy of that name—a part which he rendered once before during his last engagement. Though tho tragedy is, por- haps, more suited to the closet than the stage, and in all, aave the character of Brutus, is weak, rather tame and decidediy tiresome, the undoubted dramatic gonius of Booth redeoms it from abeolute flatness in his fine per- sématiou of the Roman citizon and patriot. Mr. Booth, wo believe, has made this character his own, and in less potent bands than his we fear that it would make but Lite impression upon a criticalaudienos. Tho actor, how- ever, should not be hold responsible for the short comings: of the dramatic author, and if in rendering an admirable poom, but indifferent stage piece, such as this, in a most Pappy and effective manor, radounda to the credit of the actor, then Mr. Booth ia entitled to every merit. There are only two forcible Boones in the tragedy—one the ap- peal of Brutus & the people over the body of Lucrotia, and the other the judgment scene, in which he condemns his gon to death In the last act, and in both, Mr. Booth was oxcelicnt, faithfully impersonating in one the subtie r leader, and m the other oe stern, tahexible rege ing, yet conquering, the human’ attributes 2 the {nthor and ike tann, Mur, Booth wad called before the Curtain twice to receive tixe approbation of the audience, which be unquestionably deserved. The present ment, we believe, 6 Only for vory limited period, in which Mr. Booth will appear four nigh in each week. ‘To-night Mise Aimy Elliott biuamore—the young debutante who made her first essay a8 Julieta short time since with considerable success—re-ap aa Juila im Sheridan Knowles’ charming arama of ‘The Hunchback,” a cha racter im which we bave no doubt she will scoure for horself # fair share of popular favor. ‘Tak Fret Organic Season 1x BRooKiyy.—To-night the associated artiste inaugurate the Opera in Brooklyn. In ordor to avoid all cause for jealousy, the managemont has wisely resolved on opening the seasen with the “Giura- mento’’—tho success of which at the New York Academy last night was eo decided. Thus our Brooklyn noighbors have not only the advantage of the best artists that the motropolis can boast of, but of the latest operatic novel- ties. tt is for them to prove by their support of the epterprise that their now Opera house was not a mistaken necessity, Should they al- low the present excellent compavy, which has jmourred a large pecuniary risk to gratify them, to lose mouoy by their leaso of tho house, it will be some time before they can induge others to repeat the exper!- ment. Let thom show that in « city of three hundred thouaand inhabitants there ia a sufficient number of por- sons of taste and intelligence to rise above the contracted ideas of certain small Puritan apoutera, who can only see im the theatre and in art inveations of the devil and pitfalls for the righteous. Yesterday afternoon, the vicinity of Luis, in Harlem lane, presented an animated spectacle. Dozeus of car- riages were driven up, well dressed gentlemen sprang out and passed into the barroom, where some two or three hundrea equally reepectable in appearance were collected. Among the party there wore several mombers of the Common Council, a prominent government official, several Wall street financiers and aumbers of woll known local politicians. John Morrissey, Dad Cunningham and others of that class made up a small party of the musou- lar fraternity. Of these, however, there were but fow. ‘The reason of this promiscuous gathering was the au- nouncemeut that a choice lot of New York and Troy (owls were to contend for a pui of $3,000—Morrissey backing one side, and, it was maa member of the city government the other. ‘The ticketa of admission to Lae pit were $3, ne though considered a high price every seat was occupied, nearly $900 being received for entrances alone. Morrissey, during some unavoidable delay in preparing the fowls, cAme into tho pit and announced that his lot were atfeot” od by sickness, and that in consequence $2,600 he _— cuteide was withdrawn, but the fight would gof on, Police Intelligence. It shows that the banks have increased their specie over three millions of dollars, and simultaneously de- creased their loans to a like amount. The increase n the deposits is a million and a half less than the curtailment of the loans. The bank specie will next week pass the point of thirty millions, ond, as yet, there is no sign of any falling off in the receipts, and no material drain to the in- terior. The leaders ef the secession movement in the Southern States aro learning wisdom by expe- rience. When the State of South Carolina sovered the bonds which attached her to this country, and released her inhabitants from the sliegiance they owed to’ the United States, she considerately suf- fered the United States government to go on car- rying the South Carofina mails, at a lose of nearly two hundred thousand dollars a year, but she be- gan to clear ships from Charleston in the name of he State. In Mississippi, Alabama and Florida a similar course was pursued, The Collectors at ports of entry ceased to act in thename of the United States on the passage of ordinances of se- cession, The consequences were obvious. At Charleston the prospect of hostilities closed the port. At Mobile and Apalachicola every «hip in port cleared on the day of the passage of the ordi- nance, and thus obtained e federal clearance, it being understood that the port officials would wink at the loading of vessels after they had cleared, In Georgia, it seems, this plan has been improved upon. The ordimance of ‘secession was followed in sharp order by a series of resolutions declaring that the United States laws were stillin force, inclu- ding the tariff, and of course maintaining the United States courts, collectors, naval officers, &o., in full force and function. By this means Savannah continues to enjoy a foreign trade, while her neigh- bor, Charleston, is not exporting a pound of cotton or importing @ case of foreign goods. Georgia has in fact seceded on paper only, and the people of Savannah thus escape the sufferings which the pre- cipitate conduct of South Carolina and Alabama has inflicted on Charleston and Mobile. The re- cent attitude of our foreign banking houses may have had something to do with producing this re- salt. For some days the few houses which con- tinue to buy bills at the South have directed their agents to buy no bills which had not a bill of lad- ing and a federal clearance attached. ‘The business of the Sub-Treasury was large to- day, some two millions having been paid in on ao- count of the new Treasury notes. The following are the figures :— -, $2,162,345 96 A railroad committee, composed of the presi- dents of all the leading roads in the North, includ- ing the Grand Trunk, is in session at Washington to-day. It is understood to have reference to some general arrangement about freights, and also to fix upon some schedule for the transportation of cotton on & moderate basis, with a view of secur- ing it for the Northern roads, The Cincinnati Gazette says:— ‘The executive committee of the two Miami roads have revised their tariff on cotton from Memphis to the Kastern cities, and have made the following rates, based on $1 for compressed and $140 for uncompressed, including Ciweinuati transfer from Memphis to the following pola, Com; uw 464 604 4 H 30 None, The Boston pear Bulletin of Saturday statos:— Altbongh the money market has not materially changed since our last, ite course, upou the whole, haa been to- wards greater caee and abandance. The banks are again increasing specte, maialy from the pro- ceeds of Engliea gol’ cent to the mint for recoinage. New York funds are scarce and in request, and {t is cer- tain that the practical retes for esteemed paper are lower in State street than in Wail street.
