‘ ‘had to himself in reading the astounding news | of this aforesaid awful conspiracy. The vaga- ‘bond Bohemian inventing it is utterly unwor- ‘thy of credence, and the provincial editor , whom be serves is a conceited and disappointed politician, still smarting from the remembrance that, although poor Pierce elevated him to a foreign mission, Mr. Buchanan found it expe- -dient to dispense with his services, A Granp Narioxa, Commrrres or Pxace- ‘maKERS.—The Richmond (Va.) Whig (Union organ) proposes that the sectional difficulties between the North and the South on the slavery ‘question be submitted to a board of arbitrators selected from the most distinguished men of the ountry, and names for this business ex-Presi- dents Van Buren, Tyler, Pierce and Fillmore, end late Presidential candidates Fremont, Bell and Breokinridge, together with Chief Jus- ‘tice Taney and Lieutenant General Scott. These distinguished men, the Whig calls upon Con- gress, or the States, or the people, te summon together as a Grand Amphictyonic Council, “to consult upon the common good and «gommon safety of the republic.” This committee, we submit, is not the re- omedy for the crisis. The first man indicated, Martin Van Buren, is about the last man to act ‘ms a’peacemaker with the South. Never any- higher than an intriguing politician, his bit of personal revenge against General Cass .and the democratic party in 1848 laid the undations of the present victorious repub- ican organization of the North; for the Van Buren free soil platform of 1848 and the Chi- cago platform of 1860 are’ substantially the same thing. John Tyler made a respectable President, though left without a party to back him except his office holders ; but his day has gone by. Mr. Fillmore has been too deeply mixed up in party broils to be useful as a pa- cificator of sectional disputes. Poor Pierce, together with Douglas, Jefferson Davis, Cush- ing and others, in 1854, opened the box of Pandora which has brought all these existing troubles upon the country. Poor Pierce must be set aside. Fremont is too busy with his California gold mines to be - thought of for political purposes. Let the Pathfinder remain where he is. Chief Justice Taney is -out of the question as a compromiser. His business is justice aud the law. Gen. Scott -cannot be spared from his duties as the active head of the army; and so we dispose of this grand national committee of our Richmond -cotemporary. The man for this crisis is the President elect -of the United States. The President in power bas exhausted his resources as a peacemaker; Congress sticks fast in the “slough of de- :spond.” Abrabam Linceln, charged with the responsibilities of the incoming administration, is the man for these times, if he will only lift ‘hifaself up to the necessities of the day. Tho sanointed head and front, embodiment and ex- pounder, dictator and administrator of the re- publican party, Mr. Lincoln is the maa of all men qualified, trom his position and his respon- -sibilities, to save this couutry from destruction. Let him come forward, in good faith and ina ‘broad and liberal spirit as a peacemaker, and ‘we shall have peace. Let him persist in hold- ing back, and all the efforts of all other men to wave the Union will most probably end in civil war. et NEWS FROM THE NATIONAL CAPITAL. Wasurvuton, Dec. 23, 1860.
