There was quite an inquiry for first class paper, which is growing scarce, and the amount offering on call was considerably in excess of the wants of the brokers. There was a buoyant stock market to-day, on the strength of the receipts of specie from abroad. All stocks, State, federal and railroad, were in de- mand at a marked advance. The most buoyan shares on the list were Erie, New York Centra and the Michigan shares, all of which continue to be taken for foreign account. Pacific Mail and Panama are also wanted at an advance. The rise in State and federal stocks occasioned some re- mark, in connection with the secession @f South Carolina, United States stocks advanced 3 pe ceut. After the board the market was rather lower; in the afternoon it was active again at full prices, and closed strong, the following being the quotations :—Tennessees, 77 a 78; Virginia 6's, 77 278; Missouri 6's, 69 a 4; Pacific Mall, 87 a; New York Central, 755% a %; Erie, 3648 %; Hudson River, 438%; Harlem, 14% a %; do. preferred, 35 a 14; Reading, 35% a 364%; Michi- gan Central, 494 a %; Michigan Southern and Northern Indiana, 144% a %; do. guaranteed, 324 33; Panama, 118a 11924; Illinois Central, 66% a 6734; Galena and Chicago, 64% a %%; Cleveland and Toledo, 30% a %; Chicago and Rock Island, 52% a %4; Chicago, Burlington and Quincy, 63. Yet, of course, there is somewhat of a scarcity of money here. ‘The calls for sight exchange were not #0 large as here- tofore, not because a supply has been furnished, for there has been no means of creating it, except b; ship- ping corn; but a determination seems to be manifest not to submit longer to such rates as prevail now. Certitir cates of deposit at bank have beea sent on by some, and creditors who can will wait with patience until an im- t is had in the exchange market. The selling rate of sight on the East remains at I per cent premium over Missouri paper; the street rate being 934.
