vepublican journals are using violent, defiant nd exasperating language toward the Southera States, as if they were anxious to precipitate disunion and civil war upon the country. The extracts which we give in another column from ihe leading republican papers of this city are moet unwise in the existing excitement, and are not caloulated to appease the hot blood which is rushing tamultuously through the en- ‘Ue system of the South. Porvtan Movewent on Beaauy or Irauy— ‘Tax Ganwauot Foxp.—A good cause is half she battle in argument, and therefore we may suppose it will not be difficult for us to convince the people of New York amd the United States that they ought to do something for the hero Garibaldi, his brave followers and the cause of freedom in Ataly. We broached the subject in a former isene, but we feel that it is not one that ought to be allowed to rest, and that whatever is done ought to be done quickly. There is no more generous nation than our own on the face of the thousand dollars for the Pope, and twenty thousand for the sufferers by the outbreak in Syria, and we have shown ourselves at all times ready to lend our assistance in what we esteemed righteous, and in ameliorating the condition of the distressed. It therefore only requires to be prominently ‘and definitely mede known that Garibaldi is fin want of funds for carrying on the great ‘work he has begun, and that whatever we choose to eend him wil! be gratefully accepted, fo make our citizens come forward and con- tribute to the furtherance of so noble a project as the emancipation of Italy—that Italy which, Just escaped from the grasp of the tyrant, is now on the verge of liberty, and whose future will be the glory of the werld—the home of freedom and the school of those arts which are the great componnd and bulwark of our ad- vancing civilization. For without art, science and literature, in which Italy has shone most giloriousi y, our civilization would die ont altoge- ther, as it did in the Byzantine empire ages Jong ago. We are well able and called upon to a‘ford Bubstantial aid to the man who, in a letter to one of our citizens, which we pub- fished a fortnight ago. said:—“I shall feel greatly obliged by your expressing my sym- pathy for the American people, the grandeur of whose elevation I admire, and which arose from the same revolutionary cause as that in ‘which the Italians are now struggling for liber- ty.” There is a bond of sympathy between &he people of the United States and the heroic General who lived a0 long among us, and dur- Ing the greater part of the time had his home ‘on Staten Island, and who is now accomplishing what al! the world beside despaired of. There- fore, Americans, will you not give him a help- fog band in his last great struggle for that Dlessing which you yourselves .enjoy—the priceless boon of liberty’ We have no wish to preach s charity sermon. We leave it to the ood understanding and noble, liberal impulses of our people, than which there are none more intelligent or buepitable in the world, and we feel confident that they will do what is right It will be an easy matter to call public meet- ings upon the subject, and also to open sub- scriptions in our cities and villages, just as we ourselves have already done in the office of our establishment; and that the imvitation to raise & sum of money, and a handsome sum, too, will be promptly complied with, we feel certain. Who will come torward to head the subscription fist? Where are our Jobn Jacob Astors and other millionaries, and where is Mr. John An- Gerson, who, being tp correspondence with Genera! Garibaldi, feels, we should infer, so @ven more than ordinary interest in the cause! Oar merchants, we are sure, will not be back- ward in contributing to the foundation of that fnew kingdom, between which and this country there are certain to aries more intimate commercial relations than we have ever bad with any country of Contioeatal Europe. Ga ribaidi has still a hard taek before him. Italy will bave to continue the struggle unaided, and not only that, but with at least the passive hos tility of all the great Powers of Europe, except Fogisnd—for the abrupt termination of the Warew Conference was ominous, and the re- Pources of & country never improve under the terribie influence of war. Help, therefore, from sbroad is the great thing needed by the patriot Geoeral and his devoted army of volun- teers in this to be ever memorable campaign, daring for its aim the permanent welfare of a vit hitherto downtrodden people Despatches for rope. ‘The steamship Prince Albert, which left this port for Gaiway, via St Jobus, N.
