N. Maffitt, the crew being taken on board al the request of Mr. Savage, United States Vice Consul at Havana, as distressed American seamen:— The City of Norfolk sailed from the port of New York on the 6th day of Jone Jast, for the purpose, as we were twformed, of entering the service of the government of Venezoela as @ transport. The steamer arrived at St Thomas, the passage occupying ten days, where we re- mained #)x days, and discharged a part of the cargo, con fisting of tobacco and packages of merchandise appa- rently, the contents of which were vuknown to us, While tying At thie port we received on board the steamer two bondred tons of coal and eighteen large casks, the con Lente of which were not known by us at the time. We sailed thence for Barcelona—the passage occupying ‘three daye—where we took im a quantity of fresh provi- sions (for the cabin) and an enormous quantity of freah water for #hip’s use. Suspicions of wrong were aroused, Dut again allayed, on account of the nature of oar voyage, fas & transport, necessarily requiring a larger quantity than a & trader. On tbe fifth day out of St. Thomas, the seamen were ordered below to open the casks above mentioned, and fonnd them to contain rice, beans, &c., besides a number of ke ge of spoons, small tin cups, ravors and combs. This tance was made the theme of conversation forward , after mature deliberation, we went to the captain in & body rejuesting to be informed of hi inventions and the destination of the ship, upon which he frankly admitted thet he was bound to the coast of Africa for the purpose of procuring @ cargo of slaves. le expresmed to bim our decided wawilling ness to go, ‘and that be should have informed os of that fact wh in port. SATURDAY, Oct. 20—€ P. M sligh: fluctuations. This is chiefly due to the foreign demand. Our latest advices from England state that they will need there every bushel of wheat and corn that can be sent them; that their grain is not only deficient in quantity, but is so poor in quality that it cannot be used without mixing it with a sounder berry. Allowance must be made, in listening to these statements, for the anxiety of brokers to see the market advance; but still the actual shipments, and the steadiness of prices both in Liveryfool and Chicago, prove that our farmers are not going to suffer for want of a mar ket. Prices in Chicago are still seven to ten cents above the point which, at the commencement of the season, farmers stated would be perfectly satis factory to them, The last cotton panic—which was based upon the recent storm—has subsided, and prices have not been much helped by it. Some cotton was, doubtless, seriously injured, but this apparently formed but a very small proy Asim —The market was steady, with sales of 304 barrels both sorts at 540. Reeapeti sys —Floor—The market opened with less spirit, and at a elygbt concession in favor of purchasers for common and medium grades, at which av improved demand sprung up, and sales were made of about 16,000 barrels, closing within the following range of prices:— Superflve State........ ee ee Extra State, from old and new wheat, Superfine Western. The sales em braced about 1800 barrels, closing within the range of the above quotations, Rye flour was in fair * | request, with sales of 300 bbis., at our quotations. Corn na- | meai was in fair demand, gpd prices steady, within the 25,000 bales behind last year. Itis likely that, as the season advances and the natural wants of trade keep the markets steady, we shall fewer complaints from the South and higher esti mates of the crop. Many of the estimates which have been published, and which contemp' heavy decline from last year, seem to have nated from parties who had the market rather than the truth at heart The movement of specie during the past week has been in favor of the bank average. We re- ceived on Sunday a sum of nearly two millions in ecie from California; the only export that will tell against the average has been the shipment of Saturday, 13th, about $1,700, and a sum of $104,300 shipped in the Saxonia. Yesterday's ship- ment, as usual, will not count against the state- ment to be made up to-morrow. The Sub-Treasu- ry has lost a trifle during the week, the balance standing yesterday at $4,454,642, against $4,490), 881 at the close of last week, and $1,703,389 at the corresponding date last r.
