8 FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Sunpay, Sept, 23, 1869. ‘The foreicn commerce of the port of New York for the week which ended yesterday was more ac- tive in exports of domestic produce than the cor- cesponding week of last year; lat the exports of apecie were much less, and the imports of foreign goods were slightly less. The country is in @ far better condition to do a large business now than when. Bat the large exports of produce from this port— $17,250,000 in exvess of lant year to date— have caused the specie export 1.9 decline; and, on the other hand, the losses ‘of last year have tanght our importers prudence, Thefollowing are the tables for the week and tse year to date:— Luror? 4, aan the Week 1858. 859 1 hin Ai $1,794,079 1,864,649 1,809,505 Cereal mercbandie. 3,971,613 $099,777 1,920,775 Total for tbe week. $491,692 5,904,420 3,790,080 Previously reported soeiveoa7 178,756,836 172'100,311 7,576,508 182,001,202 175,830,191 Since Jan. A decline of 6 a 8 cents at Chicago and of 10 a 22 cents here per bushel on wheat was the lmmedia’ igen or a time tl @orn Exchange was under the sway of a positive panic. Jt seems that some of our grain speculators bad deen buying heavily on the expectation of woek higher prices abroad; the astounding news ‘hai she British crop might prove almost an ave- age must have been very disastrous to them. We bave already taken occasion to observe that what- ever may be the fate of the speculators in food, in the British harvest and the con- ime in prices here are matters of gene- yal congratulation; cheap food is the first condition weceseary for general prosperity and profitable eommerce. It is a mistake to suppose, how- ever, as some appear to do, that a decline of ten or even twenty cents a bushel in the price of wheat is going to check the movement of the Western crops. In fact, the farmers are more Wkely to hoard their crops on a rising than ona falling market. But itis utterly absurd to expect ‘hat there will be any hoarding. At 75 a 80cents a eshel ot Chicago, which are the latest reported prices, wh pays @ magnificent profit to the grower; and even if the protitwere less, the farmers coukd not afford to do without it, for they must bave woney. To suppose that the Western wheat growers, who have been in the greatest want for sbree years, will now hang back and refuse to fill their pockets with money because prices fa ten or fifteen per cent, is not to @isplay any extensive knowledge of buman mawre or the ordinary springs of human conduct. Nor is such a theory consistent with the facts. During the week ending on Wednes: day the receipts at Chicago were 1,352,538 bushels grain, ogainst 1,806,278 the previous week, and 865,64 the corresponding week of last year; and, notwithstanding the advices from Eu- rope, t xport movement from this port is as brisk as ever. According to the laws of supply and demand, breadstafls are still too high, and prices will yet fall. But those who expect that the producers are in a condition to withhold their sup- plies, or that much lower prices than those now reling will not pay U ost of bringing the staff to er their mistake before many market, will dis mow'ls elapse. The movement of specie has again been against be vank ave! The loss by export, including the kipment of Saturday, 15th, and exclasive of that of yesterday, has been about $850,000, against which » banks have received some parcels of gold from *be South, and also ftom Baltimore and Philadel phia. The Sub-Treasury has lost money since last week, the balance last evening standing at $5,446, 804, agai 5,636,367 at the close of the previous | week, and $5,100,520 at the corresponding date last | year. Last Monday the banks showed a specie | average equal to $15,960,749, which was a decrease ef $206,0%4 from the week previous; at this | @ate last year the specie reserve was stated | to be #£20,660,436. The steamship Ariel, which arrived yesterday from Aspinwall, brought $1,202,875 in specie. peice : The money market was easier at the close of last | Wheat—The receipts were heavy, whue the week than it was when our last weekly review was penned. A good deal of money was seeking em- ployment on Friday and Saturday at 6 a6) per cent on call, and though when a broker goes in quest of money he is expected to pay seven, the well established houses have as much money as they need left with them st lower rates. The note brokers say that the circle of 6 a 6) pet cent paper is enlarging, and that the holders of choice short acceptances are unwii to pay seven per cent. Four or six months’ paper, strictly first class, goes | Were dull apd supplies moderate: sales of Canadian @teeven, and some paper which was not current under eight a nine a week ago can now be passed St seven per cent. The market yielded, on most of these stocks, to the offerings of the sellers for a decline; it remains to be seen, however, whether the operation will prove eventually profit- able. For some months the bear side has been a losing one, Stocks have reacted from time to ime, and some have declined several per cent; but the misfortune of the bears has been that they have made most of their contracts at the lowest figures of the reaction, and that, as soon as they bad got their lime out, prices recovered, They heve labored under the marked disadvantage of having the substantial facts of the day against them. They make the best nse of the Presidential election, the bank expansion, the rail- way troubles of past years, and so forth; but against these there is the irresistible argument that all the roads are taking in a great deal more money than they have taken since 1856, and that the re- covery of the Western country insures a continu- ance of the increased traffic. It may be very true that the receipts of the present time compare with those of a bad year; but the public does not enter into these fine distinctions. Buyers of stocks are not apt to weigh matters with the nicety of politi- cal economists. When people see railroad receipts increasing steadily, week after week, at the rate of 30 to 50 to 100 per cent, they generally as- some, on general principles, that stocks must advance, and they will carry their convictions into practical effect by purchases. This is, appa- rently, the secret of the failure of the bears, not- withstanding the skill and shrewdness they have exhibited; and, from present appearances, the fu- ture prospect does not seem any brighter for their cause than the past, The most active stock on the list last week was Erie, which advanced from 323 to 37 almost without check. The advance appears to have been due partly to the increased business of the road, and partly to the large short interest. Speculators who knew that the Erie had a large floating debt, and a preferred stock to be created atthe organization, very naturally deemed 32 a high price for the common stock, and sold it ac- cordingly. It was an unfortunate speculation, A demand suddenly sprang up last week which the supply of stock on the street was insufficient to satisfy; the consequence was an advance of 4 per cent in a couple of days, and & proportionate loss for the sellers, Of the future course of Erie stock it is very difficult to form an an opinion. The obstacles in the way of its be- coming dividend paying property are formidable in the extreme, and if we are to judge by compari- son, other stocks, such as Central, Rock Island and Toledo, are dirt cheap at their present prices, if Erie, with a floating debt of over a million, and @ preferred stock of eight or nine millions to be created hereafter, is worth $37 the share. At the same time etock speculation is ever capricious, and Erie has always been a favorite football for the bulls an¢ bears; those Who know the most and are the slrewdest are often the grea losers in this stock. The earnings’ of the Western roads are now going to compare with the very fair traMic of the fail of 1959, and it is not likely that the next few weeks will show as handsome an increase as the past month has done. On the other hand, the traffic on the New York roads is only just beginning to feel the effects of the harvest, and is increasing ata prodigious rate. The increase on the Erie and Central this month is roughly estimated ot $150,000, and next month it is reported that the Central will I take a million of dollars. The Michigan roads are increasing largely; the Southern is expected to take $50,000 more than last year in September. The Toledo is feeling the effect of the harvest even sooner than was expected, and wil! probably gain $10,000 or $12,000 this month. CITY COMMERCIAL REPORT, Satrnpay, Sept. 22—6 7 M.
