o- supply the replies 4 army and navy asa new anti-slavery Volunteer organization. “Who knows! “Tae Gents og tae New York Henato."— Our metropolitan journals generally, and the Rew Yorx Hersup in particular, are great ‘purwles, unriddled Sphynxes, to the English ‘Press and the English people. The Hxra.p, especially, is the object of mingled wonderment ‘and admiration with the people of the mother iand. Its enterprise seems to startle, and its boldness in dealing with all kinds of subjects ‘Appears to bewilder them. They forget that we have no red tape system here, and that routine is absolutely unknown. There is no humdrum about the Hxraup, and above all things it never goes to sleep, like many other journals at home and abroad. These are facts which the English press is beginning to discover, although it is evident that it does no clearly understand them. We have published sketches of the homes and habits of the different candidates for the Presi- dency now before the country, and they have been very popular here, have given great plea- eure to our people, and have been invariably copied ali through the country. The candi- dates themselves have no objection to them, but, on the contrary, consider them fair, candid and truthful descriptions. But the London @lode, in an article which we give in another column, is evidently taken all aback at the peculiarity of this kind of journalism. It gives the most piquant extracts from our sketches, with free and easy comments of its own. It admits that English journals sometimes enliven their columns with dull anecdotes of Lord Palmerston and Lord John Russell, but the idea of giving detailed descriptions of the homes, families and private lives of public men seeking the highest office in the gift of the ‘people, in whom the whole nation is naturally interested, is one that baffles the comprehen- sion. of our London cotemporary, and it can- didly acknowledges that “our newspapers sadly want the genius of the New York Herat.” ‘That is just what Mr. Cobden said ; just what everyone says who reads American and Eng- lish newspapers ; and it is precisely what we way. The Canadian papers, too, have just dis- covered the same thing by the manner in which ‘we described the tour of the Prince of Wales fn advance of themselves and of the English newspaper correspondents specially detailed for the purpose. The Canadian papers were at firet quite sleepy over the Prince's sayings and doings ; then, when they found that the Heray was eclipsing them in speed and accuracy, they commenced to abnse us, and villify our reporters: Now they are ruuning into the other extreme, by out-Jenkinsing Jenkins, and mak- ing themselves ridiculous by over doing every- thing. Like badly taught parrots, they are al- ways saying the wrong things in the wrong places ; or, like the frog in the fable, they are straining themselves to arrive at the dimensions of the Henry's reports until they fairly burst, to the infinite amusement of all intelligent people. The English press, heavy and behind ‘the age as it is, has too much acumen to fall Anto this ridiculous error; but we entirely agree with the Globe that the London newspapers | “eadly want the genius of the New Yor« | ‘Henatp.” Tur Asse McMaster ox Fcstoy.—The Abbe | McMaster, of the Freeman's Journal, scouts the | dea of a fusion with the Breckinridge demo- cracy as “fusion nonsense.” A fusion, be tells us, has been made with the Bell-Everett party, | because that prarrenntat to,“ mecsly Sane | tion,” and has nothing in it inconsistent with the principles of the national democracy; but the Breckinridge faction is a horse of acother color. A large number of politicians of all shades, grades and importance were im attendance, watching the movements of the powers assembied. Breckinridge, Bell and Douglas men were seen movisg about in the crowd, eyeing every one supposed to have ay power with the committee—some counsel- ing fusion, others talking anti-fusion and denouncing the idea of yielding any of the electoral ticket, Amongst the Outsiders we noticed William Kelly, the Douglas nominees for Governor; James Brooks, of the Eapress; George San- ders, Senator Lawrence, and several others from ali parts Of the State, At the time the committee retired there was any- thing but union of feeling amongst the floating fragments about the hotel, and the feeling for fusion in the minds of those managing the machine was excecd- ingly doubtful. They assembled in the room 589, at twenty minutes before one o'clock, but did not organize until near two P. After some further con- gultation they were asked to furnish the names that they desired to have placed on the electoral ticket, whereupon the Volunteers retired to prepare a lis:. ‘They subsequently appeared with a complete list, re- commending that one ef the Douglas electors from the State at large resign, and bis place be @iled with the name of James T, Brady, and that nine of the district elec” tors also resign. and that that number of the electors at pre. sent upon the Breckinridge eleotora! ticket be substituted tm their place. Also, that the candidates tor Lieutenant Governor and Canal Commissioner, at prosemt on the Breckinridge State ticket, be put on the Douglas State ticket, in lieu of those already nominated for those offices. Some little time was epent in the interchange of ideas, when the Douglas committee informed them that they would consider their proposition at the evening's session, and would then give them their reply. The delegation from the Volunteers then withdrew, and the Richmond Committee laid their communication upon the table and took a recees until seven o'clock P. M. To yesterday’s report of the fusion men, the name of Mott was made to read Worth. We also omitted to state that nothing was said im the conferences be- tween the two sub-committees about the Breckinridge party considering the proposition of Mr, Wood—a virteal endorsement of the equatter sovereignty of Dougias, aad the abandonment of their platform adopted at Baltimore. Mr. Lafiin assures us that oo such conversation took place. EVENING SESSION. ‘Most of the evening was spent in general conversation 2nd consultation by the managers of the Douglas organiza- tion. 8t. Nicholas Hote) was filed with politicians, who were flying about with all maoner of rumors as to what ‘would be done by the committe, no two holding the same view as to what would be accomplished. Thecommittee were dodging about, consulting with this and that persoa, and receiving the opinion of every one upou this import ant subject, just as though they cared anything about the views of other persons. There was « stroug outside pres- sure upon & portion of the committee from merchants 2nd others io this city, who declared that there should be no campaign funds unless @ fusion was perfected. This seemed to be the strongest argument in the minds of the no-fusion members of the committee that was raised, aud about the only thing that induced portion of the committee to consider any proposition, as the men that have heretofore subscribed the funds for the democracy are pow eorolled in the ranks of the Breckinridge party. Fuse or ao bread, was the philosopher's stone that seemed for the time being to bring the Regency to ite senses. The universal rumor amongst the outside politicians throughout the evening was tbat there would be a union in some form. tt was said that even Ongver declared that B satisfactory ticket would be arranged—aot by takiwog the ultimatum of the Green Committee, nor the propos!- tion of the Volunteers, but by the selection of a ticket to sult themselves, by putting upon {t from #1 to ten names such as might suit Richmond and Cagger, and that ticket Jncoched forth ax a Union electoral ticket, representiog all the brayches of the anti-Lineoln forces. It is said that Richmond and Cagger positively deciine taking the bames of any persons offered by the other parties, This ws bot aid publicly, but only to friends, thoee of thetr own mode of thinking. The names that wors Goating about a8 provable to bs selected by them are James T. Brady, Joebua J. Henry, Wm 8. Duncan, Wilson G. Hant, Moses Taylor aad Gouverneur Kembie—only one of the names suggested by the De:nocratic Volunteers Thee gentle men may find their way upon the ticket, and they may not. Nine-temtbs of the Douglas politiciaus around the hotel last evening were sanguine that they would, and | perbaps enough more to make the aumber up to teu, aud, what was more, each person pretended that they spoke knowing the views of Ricbmond, Cagger & Co. The Committee was not called to order until after nice o'clock, and immediately after order was restored » gen Veman frou the rural districts offered a resolution ap- point: g & sub-committee of tarec, sometnting of Rich mond, Cagger and Hubbard, with full power to filany 2 | vacancies that may occur om the electoral ticket. ‘This resolution was adopted without calling the yeas and pays, whereupon Mr. Dayton said, is it now understood that this sub committee have power to do eayth.eg and just what they please. Receiving an affirmative reply, be then said that there seems to be no further work for the Central Committee, they are now simply an appendage to the sub-committee, to be used if convenient; he moved, therefore, that the committee do pow adjourn sine die. The motion was put and carried, the Committee sur rendering everything into the bands of Richmond aud Cagger, who are now to run the democratic machine by authority. ‘The proposition of the Volunteers wea uot taken from the table during the evening session, the Committec ad journing withovt consideriog it. Bulsequeatly to adjournment the sub-committee fixed a meeting for to day , at twe.ve o'clock , to consult with the Volanteers im regard to thelr ticket, promising to bave all done that they intend to do before four o'clock this afternoon. ‘With thin generai understanding the Commitiee sepa- rated, and the numerous pollticiane leit the hotel. There is & movement on foot to bring out a Caton Ueket at the Usion ratification meeting on Monday aight pest, if this committee do pot form one before that time The merchants declare that they will not wait the slow motion of the Regency apy longer, and {f there is no fusion ticket formed before, they will make one out of the three electoral tickets in the Geld, and aunoance it at the ratification meeting. So stands the fusion programm: ‘at the last Lour of the 14th day of September.
