All these roa be more popular with outsiders then they were. The earnings this fall on nearly all the Western roads will be the heaviest ever received since 1596, and on some roads they will exceed those of that year. Pacific Mail is dull again at 524-—an advance of 4 per cent from the price a week since. A story is afloat to the effect that the advance is dae to a settlement of some kind between Commodore Vanderbilt and Mr. Roberts, There is and hes been no conflict between these parties, and conse- quently there is nothing to settle. Roberts has sent two steamers to the Pacillc, appa- reutly in order to compete with the Pecific Mail Company; if tais be true, the best thing for him to do now is to have them towed to asafe place and there burned. There is very far from being business enouzh for the large fleet which the Pacitic Mail now has on that side of the continent; the two new comers will love money every trip for their owners, if, indeed, ihey do not find some more sensible employment than plying between San Francisco and Panama. The decline in Pacific Mail stock is due to the decline in the traffic between bere and California, which is evidenced in the traffic reports of the Panama Rail” way. The following were the last quotations of the day:—Virginia 6's, 91 a 4; Missouri 6's, 81} a §; Canton, 19; Cumberland Coal preferred, 144 4 Pacific Mail, 834 @ 4; New York Central, 84) a 83; Brie, 283 @ 4; Hudson River, 57] a 58; Harlem, 17} 918; do. preferred, 45} 2 46; Reading, 46] a}; Central, 71 2}; Michigan Southern and Northern Indiana, 21} a }; do. guaranteed, 46) a} Panama, 1264 a}; Illinois Central, 86 a 4; Gulena and Chicago, 794 a {; Cleveland and Toledo, 454 a 1; Chicago and Rock Island, 79) a 4. We notice that the people of Pittsburg, Pa., have invited the Prince of Wales to visit that city, promising him ‘‘a cordial welcome and their most generous hospitality.” The last distinguished foreigners who enjoyed the ‘‘ generous hospitali- ty” of the city of Pittsburg were some unhappy Germans, Englishmen and Frenchmen, to whom it sold bonds which it now repudiates. Will not the coramittee which conveys the invitation to the Prince of Wales feel awkward if any of the suite should happen to hold any Pittsburg bonds? Had they not better make sure of the fact before they venture on the mission? The Dake of Newcestle is understood to have large sums invested in Ameri- can securities. What if he should take the opportu- nity of suggesting that, before the city of Pittsburg throws away money upon festivities, it should pay up its back interest? It will be of no use for the Pittsburg people to compare their city to Bir- mingham, as their fashion is; the Duke will remind them sternly that Birmingham pays its debts, which Pittsburg does not. Nor will it avail them avything to brag to bis Grace of the growth of their prosperity and the spread of their manufec- tures; the Dake will at once remind them that they are mere frandulent insolvents, and that before they boast they should pay up. If they do carry ont their intention, we ventare to suggest that, as each American city will present the Prince with some characteristic memento of his visit, Pittsburg should tender to his Royal Highness a protested coupon, with a fac simile of the dishonest plea by which the city now attempts to evade payment of ita debts, Some more reports of the Aagnst traffic on the Western reads have come in, and we repablisi oar table, with additions: — R Augrett, 98. Quincy, Rock |stand, Fulton, Ga- Jena and Dunleith—all important termini of rail- ways upon the Mississippi riverwill crowd the steamers, &c., &e., and Cairo alone will take out 3,000,000 to 4,000,000 bushels from the Illinois Cen- tral. We may estimate the sutplus of grain deli- vered from Iiinois at 75,000,400 bushels. The average price is likely to rule af least 30 cents per bushel higher than for the last thred years. This, on the quantity exported from Minols alone, is the snag sam of $22,500,000. Ther is ® word to be said as to the quantity produced. Inthe four years commencing January 1, 1850, and terminating Janu- ary 1, 1854, only 18,762,551 bushels were shipped 320 bushels, or double the shipment of any previous year, were sent out, and the figures went on in- creasing until the maximum of 21,893,221 bushels was reached in 1856. This has already been equalled by the exports to eptember 1 of the present year, and nearly as much more grain will go forward prior to Jamuary 3. From all these data, derived fromthe most intel ligent and reliable information in the West, it will be seen that the stock in hand, after the close of navigation, will be creater than at the period of harvesting in Aug any previons year.
