M The steamship Persia sailed to-day with $445,352 in specie on freight—rather more than was expect- ed, some shippers having determined at the last moment to divide their shipments between the Persia and the Saturday's steamers. Exchange closed steady; the rates at some of the leading drawers are aboye the market, in consequence of an unwillingness to draw at present. Money continues in pretty active demand; to- day some more produce paper made its appear ance in the street, and went off at a slight ad- vance. The banks, money brokers and lenders are doing all in their power to create alarm, in order to raise the price of money; and, as usual, for atime, their efforts are partially successful. It is not likely, however, that any material ad- vance in our money market can hold. The wants of the West may for a time deprive the banks of the means of lending as much as usual at low rates in the street; but there is plenty of capital here outside of bank, which a seven per cent money market will bring ont, and which will more than supply all the legitimate wants of the commercia! community. Besides, the advances which are made to the West will very soon come back with interest. The West needs goods even more then the East and Earope need food; very little of the money now flowing Westward will re- main thirty days out of the city. While, therefore, the present increased activity in the money mar- ket may be viewed as a satisfactory symptom indi- cating a contraction on the part of our banks, it should not be regarded as premonitory of danger in the future, or asa fit subject for present aneasi- ness. Stocks were dull this morning, and, under very vigorous hammering by the bears, some con- cessions were made from yesterday's prices. The bear party is now fully organized, and con- sists of some of the oldest and moat experienced members of the Board. Their argument is that the effect of the crops has been discounted in the market, that the public are not buying stocks, and that the price of railway property will rule very low this fall, mainly in consequence of the strength wealth of the bear jobbers, who are arrayed against the market. Their opponents, on the other hand, seem to think that the jobbers have lost the control they onct exercised over the market, and that the effect of the crops, so far | from having been discounted, has hardly been felt; that the roads are going to prove, by the practical test of dividends, the real worth of their stocks, l that, in the present scarcity of desirable in- vestments, those stocks are likely to be eagerly sought after by the public. To-day, as we said, the bears had the advantage, and, comparing the prices current yesterday afternoon with those of this afternoon, we note a decline of } in Central, j in Brie, 4 in Hodson River, 4 in Harlem pre- ferred, 4 in Reading, 4 in Michigan Central, } in Southern old, 1 in guaranteed, 4 in Panama, ¢ in Tilinols Central, 1) in Galena, 1) in Toledo, 1) in Rock Island, The following were the last quota tions of the day:— Virginia 6's, 90 a }; Missouri Sl a4; Pacific Mail, 784 a i; NewYork Central, 84) aj; Erie, 28) a 3; Hudson River, 67 a 4; Harlem, 18a}; do. preferred, 454 @ 4; Reading, 45} a §; Michigan Central, 714 a 4; Michigan Southern and Northern Indiana, 21} a j; do. guaranteed, 45 a 4; Panama, 124} a 126; Mlinois Central, 864 a §; Ga- lena and Chicago, 78} @ 79; Cleveland find Toledo, 46 aj: Chicago and Rock Island, 81 a {.
