THE PRINCE OF WALES. ‘THE OUTPOURING IN MONTREAL. Additional Particulars of Satur- ‘The Prince Reads and Laughs Over the New York Journals. Bogus Incidents of Our Quad- rilateral Cotemporary. ‘Thomas Darcy BPGee and the Fate of his Speech, &., &., Special Despatch to the New York Herald. Monrewat, August 26, 1950. ‘The remarks of the Heraun in regard to the approach. ing disturbance between the French and English in Mon- reali are much commented upon and alternately approved _ and contradicted by residents. There seems to be a genered feeling among ai! classes that the departure of the Prince wi be the signal for the settlement of the quarrel ‘between the ultra French, Foglish and Irish, whom they insulted. ‘The Irish occupied a singular position at déjeuner yes- ferday. Darcy McGee, the Irish refugee, was to speak in ‘Tesponse to the Graud Trunk Railroad toast, and jt was Go anaouaced in the newspapers, and McGee, it is said, bad received and accepted an invitation. The Governor Geueral refuted to allow him to speak, and the people re- olved that no one else should reply. An interesting cone wes therefore expected to ensue. AS S000 as ‘McGee attempted to rise to speak, the Governor General and Prince withdrew from the table. This prevented the @peeches from being made, and resulted in the Prince leaving as Goon as he gave the toast. ‘The toast was another piece of finesse of the Governor General, much disliked by certain parties. The I’rince ‘put Cavade and the railroad in the same toast, so that none would refuse to drink. It is said that the government ‘will pay the expenses of the banquet, which was got up fn fae etyio by Hogan, and of tne illumination at the bridge, ia order to relieve the railroad company. The ‘bridge, like the Great Eustern, is very largo, but a pecu- niary failure, ‘The friends of. the government explain the reason why ‘Hodges, the builder of the bridge, was not knighted to be on account of a strovg feeling in the minds of the Canadians against the bestowal of titles, and especially Gereditary tities. Canadians are very democratic, though ‘Opposed tc aunenation to the United States. The Mayor ‘of Montrea! will probably receive the honor of knighthood, although tie little Mayor of Quebec, who is now here, will ‘die from mortification if he be thus surpassed. Already Rodier's scariet robe has made him sick with jealousy. Ouring their passage in the Kingston from Quebec, the Prince's party enjoyed themselves wonderfully. They ‘eat up till twelve singing Freuch songs and negro melo- dies, euck as “Carry me back to Old Virginia!’ In pri- ate the party is very affable; they address each other, “sir,” aad not by titles. On arrival at Montreal the Prince determined to stay ‘on board aii night. The in lefitigavle Sanderson, however, discovered that he bad no provisions for dinner. Just as the boat touched the dock Sanderson landed, fought his way throug the crowd and employed police forces to Gad Clors’s market; they bad no keys, but got ladders and scaled two etory windows and found provisions, and dia- ner was prepared. The Prince laughed heartily at the prospect of starvation. Members of his suite have sent despaiches to England on every possible occasion, giving full depaiis of everything that bas bappened. Sandergoa took the letter frum the New York Com- mittee to Lord Lyons yesterday. Lyons immediately Boat acarringe for them, and overwhelmed them with attentions; he gave them a place in the royal car, and will (ntroduce them to the Prince to-morrow. The Prince oad the Dake of Newcastle say that they are pleased to receive Americans of such standing, and are de Led with their attentions. ‘The Prince reads the New York papers regularly, and Aaughs at the remarke about him. The Duke of New- castie is very angry at the misrepresentations and ia- accuracies, especially of the Times The Duke of Newcastle aud the Governor General are both unwell, as well as several of the suite. ‘The Prince drove incognito through the town last even- {ag to soo the illumination, which, in detail, was very fine. Tho streets were crammed with people; the police made several arreets of pickpockets. The New York de- tectives were very active and useful ‘There will be a great crowd of strangers at the ball to. morrow. The botels charge the regular prices, but no room can be bad at private houses less than three or four | doliars a day—threo in a bed at that. The directors of the Grand Trunk Railroad addressed the Prince yesterday, in the tunnel, with few specta tors, aud 60 quietly that but few knew ngtitag | ‘about H. It was impossible to obtain a copy in time to telegraph it last night. The address gave a detailed ac- count of the work, and thanked the Prince for coming to Canada to complete it. Whatever opinion may be entertained of the Great Eastern, or rather of those who are respousible for her mauagement, it mnat be conceded to her credit that she has not acquired 60 bad @ reputation here for want of Punctuality as that sie enjoys in the Old Country. True to the time appointed for ber galling, the great ship got under way for her return voyage to Burope, on Thursday afternoon, August 16, about four o'clock. Whether it was that the men are getting more used to their work, or whether the Trotman anchor felt less disposed than usual to “hold on,” your correspondent knoweth not; but one thing is certain, it came up to the bows more readily and with less elipplag of the cable round the capstan than on apy previous occasion, The ship was ridiog with her head up eiream, and con- sequently the operation of turning had to be per- formed. A powerful steamtug was in attend. ance, but Admiral Murphy seemed to think that ber assistance was not necessary. Strong in the con. | Sdence he bas acquired by bis somewhat extended mani- pulation of the great ship, he proceeded to get ber head poluted towards the Narrows by the beip of her own mo tive power, and by a masterly employment of some of the canvass, Asa flue breeze was blowing from east south- east, a8 soon as the anchor was fairly up to the bows, the fore staysail was hoisted and the snip’s head canted slow- ly over towards the Hoboken shore, This brought the wind round by the stern on to the port quarter. The fore staysail was then hauled down, the Jigger trysail ect, the helm jammed bard aport and the screw backed. Ftve miautes under this skilful management brought her fairly round, Daring the process her stern came within one hundred feet of the Adriatic’s graceful bows, as she Jay at her dock, and the mud was go stirred up by the rapid revolutions of the screw as to give the water the consistence of pea soup. There were more people on the docks to witness our departure and more interest shown than we anticipated, considering the bad odor inte which the ship bas fallen; but to those who witnessed her progrees up the bay, on ber advent to our shores, the parting ecene was tame imieed?. Likes courteous adversary, who acknowledges the presence of fan antagonist worthy of his steel, the Adriatic salated hor gigantic rival with two guns, and displayed the Fug- lish ensign at her foremast head. The Kdinburg fired two guns as we fairly got headway down the Nerth river, ‘a compliment that was repeated by the Australasian, which lay out in the stream, bound, lilee ourselves, to the « fast anchored Isle.” Replying to these nautical civi- lities by the diecharge of our four long cighteons, paddies and screw were set in motion, aad we began our stately course towards the broad bosom of the Atlaatic. ‘The passengors on board the ferry boate John Fitch and Paterson waved an adieu with hate and handkerchiefs, and thereby earned the eternal gratitude of an enthusi- astic Britisher on board. This gentieman came out in — the ship on bis first visit to the United States. Tho very favorable impression of America and the Americans he received during the triumphal progress (rom Sandy Hook to the city appears to have been in no wise weakened by a tour of ten thousand miles, from Portland to New Or leans and from New York to Kansas. Disgusted by the change produced ia popular feeling by the mismanagement of the Cape May excursion, be grimly suggested hangiag the caiti@ Cox at the fore yard arm, 0s 9 peace offering to public opinion.
