August 10.) © troubles of the previous day, aid ‘owd, Leet erage gm and delays al- whb excursionists, made the mene om the vicubity one of great animation ‘Viet OF THE PRIRIDENT. ‘The President and suit left Washiogton at quarter even o'clock A. M., in a special train provided for t Buchanan was accompanied by Miss Lane, Pri me Secretary Buchanan, Secretary Toucey, Mra. 0. Tay Capt. Lee lea wife, Mr. Riggs (banker) ahd daughters, ier Alexander aud daughter, Commissioner B.ake, Col (Paymaster) and wife, Mr. McGraw and Mr. Browne, of the Washington Constitution. At the An polis Junction, John W. Garrett, President of the road, and Wm. Prescott Smith, Master of Transportation, re- ‘eived the President. On arriving at Annapolis, Mr. Bu- ‘ebapan and his company immediately proceeded to the Bava! Academy, where the President was received with ‘he usual #alute ‘and other military honors. Haltiag here for a short time, the oificial party, enlarged by the addi- Sion of a pumber of paval officers, embarked on board the government despatch steamer Anacostia, ‘ana ‘were con- veyed to th eat Eastern, As the Anacostia neared the Steamship, the British ensign was displayed from the peak, the American natiopal colors set, and a salute of twenty one guns fired from the heavy cannon of the Great astern ‘The scene presented at this time was one not often sur- parsed in beauty and interest. The Great Eastern, the centre of the picture, with rye sn eeanie streaming in the ‘reeb wind, her deck and the alter. ante belching forth from ellteraide ot etch ot sivet tree and emoke out of which followed the heavy boomiug roar of her artillery, presented a grand sight to the passengers eo board the steamers Lancaster and Louisiana, which laid in the vicinity. The President was received at the gangway by Coptain Vine Hall, and the other superior officers of tho ship, and e bis reacbing the deck of the thip he was received with some hearty cl 8. The reception on the part of the officers of the Great Eastern was very courteous and hoe. Pitable, but not marked byfany formality. There was no specch making on either side, and after a brief rest the President immediately commenced an ‘nspection of the ehip. Accompanied by Capt. Hall, and followed by a mis- sellaneour gathering of visiters, bé pas+ed through all the Prominent parts of the ship, listeuing to the explanations given, and apparently much interested in the mechanical wonders of the great ship. The tour ended with the grand saloon, Returuing to t x the President made bunself at home by conversing with pretty nearly every- Bory who chose to aspire to that honor, Over two hours were spent by the President ongthe ves- eel, aod on loaving the great guns again roared forth their sande: rs, and were rep ied to by the light battery of ihe Anaccetia, with a diminutive Popping that wag almost ort in the louder reverberations of the monster's fheavy metal. The visit of the President appeared to bo mu- dually agreeable. Mr. Buchanan was in fine spirits, tively, chatty and agreeable, and profuse in bis admira- dion of the greatsbip, and in expressing the pleasure he had gathered from the visit. Captain Hall and the of. cere of the Great Fastern seemed to be greatly gratified with .be visit, and were indefatigable in the exercise of every possible courtesy which might tend to testify their reepect. The President returned to the Nava! School, where he was again cfficially received, and after’spending a short vime there visited the State Honse. ‘He returned to Washington in the train which left Annapolis at half-past fix o’clac PM. The number of excursionists taken down to Annapoli vy the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad yesterday was oan darge, and the number taken down by the boats of the ps is wae perhaps as large ag ov any of the preceding THE PUILADBEPHTA YACHTS. About pine o'clock in the morning, when the upper deck o¢ the Great Bastern was ——— by five of six hun- which recently visited this dred perdane, The three sGnH Which recently visited this ity from Philadelphia sailed around 1:° a hor with repeated volleys of cannon, The appearance the crews, with their bright fand fancifully colored cos- | fumes, an’ tue Sine salting, added interest to the ecene, NOMBER OP VISITERS. The announcement that the President and several Cabinet would visit the ship, no doubt, greatly to the number of visiters, which exceeded tha! of avy previous day. One of the most agreeable excursions was that made by tho steamer Georgeanna, which left here at cix o'clock in the morn img with a company of ladies and gentlemen, numbering over nine bundred. They got aboard the ship at half-past eight, and after paesing through the various departments, without experiencing any inzonvenionce from a crowd, safely reached the city at one in the afvernoon. The ftearner Louisiana, Captatr Russell, followed at 8:30 with seomoany which crowded her from stem to stern, and eetimated at 1,400 persons. The steamers Philadelphia and Bely dere succeeded, and alternating with the others, ch, in the aggregate, did not ongand persons. M. ‘The money market is eaey again, the supply of money seeking emp!<yment on call aud for short paper being in excess of the demand. The brokers complain of the scarcity of paper, and intimate that from present appearances trade must become much more active before any important advanee in the value of money can be established. Long paper is not so much inquired for, and very good six months’ notes go at 6§ 47 per cent. The gene- ra] rate asked is 7. TI ‘Tgasury did a fair | business to-day—the were $207,029, of | which $203,000 from customs; the payments, $109,047; the balance this evening, $5,904,345. Mr. Cobb is working his way from hand to mouth, with a fair prospect, however, of being able to throw upon his successor the responsibility of negotiating the $21,000,000 loan, The dry goods import for the week ending to-day is in excess of that of the corresponding week of each of the two past years, the figures being $3,446, 000, against $3,139,000 in 1859, and $2,663,000 in 1858. This reduees last year’s excess over this year to $9,300,000. The leading silk importers ap- pear to be confident that this fall's importation will be light; the lessons of last year, they think, were 00 severe to be readily forgotten. The business done in foreign exchange for the Minois and City of Washington, which sail to-mor- row for Europe, has not been very large. The leading drawers ask 109% a 110 for sterling, and 5.13{ a 14} for francs, There are a few commercial bills in the market, but not enough to affect the de- mand for specie. Should the California steamer arvive in time the shipment to-morrow will be large; if she does not arrive in time the shipment will probably range from $1,250,000 to $1,500,000, The transactions on the Stock Exchange continue to afford the brokers as much bnsiness as they can do, The out-of-town orders are increasing very rapidly; people who lost money in stocks in 1857 and 1858 appear to think that they can make up their losses now, and, thns far, the event has certainly justified the expectation. Each day wit- nesses large sales by parties who have made, as they consider, profit enough, and who look fora downward turn in the market; but as fast as one holder sells out two new bnyers take his place, and thus the movement of prices is steadily up- ward. The stocks which improved most to-day were Illinois Central end Erie, The former opened at 87—an advance of 1} per cent over yes- terday's closing price; sold up to 88 in the morn- ing; was dona at 87} in the afternoon, and closed $7 bid. The first week's earnings are said to show an increase of $17,000. Erie opened at 29}—an advance of } since yesterday evening; sold up to nd closed 30} bid. Rock Island sold up to 85— an advance of 1 per cent; it closed 84} bid. There was a good deal of realizing inNew York Central, Toledo and guaranteed; these stocks were a shade lower in consequence. Galena advanced 1 per cent. The first week's earnings show an increase of $4,244. The new tariff esta- Dlished by this company will make a ma- terial difference in the earnings this fall. The friends of the road expect it to take asmuch money as it did in 1856. The Michigan shares were quiet- er; the common stock of the Southern advanced to 25, closing 24} bid. In the afternoon a large bu- siness was done amid considerable confusion. The Jast prices of the day were as follows:—Virginia 6's, 91j a2; Missouri 6’s, 82) a j; Canton, 197 a 20j; Comberland Coal, 154 a 16; Pacific Mail, 824 a 834; New York Central, 87} a j; Erie, 30, a 3; Hadson River, 58j 0-3; Harlem, 20a j; do. preferred, 60} 051; Reading, 48; a 3; Michigan Central, 67}a 7; Michigan Southern and Northern Indiana, 24} a 4; do. guaran- toed, 19 a}; Panama, 123 a }; Minoia Central, 87 a Jalena and Chicago, 82 a 82; Cleveland and Tol 47}.a.48; Chicago and Rock Island, 84] 285; Chica- 0, Burlington and Quincy, 89} a 90; Minois Central ja.
