Important from Garibaldi—He Premeditates an Attack: on the Mainland—State of Affairs in Noples—The French Expedition to Syria—Ambitious Projects of Napoleon, dc. Your readers will bear in mind that I predicted Gen. Garibaldi would ere long leave Sicily and attack, with the élite of his followers, the mainland. I have just re- ceived a despatch from Palermo conveying the following important information, which confirms fully my previous letters: — General Garibaldi has sailed with five thousand troops. announcing his departure for Messina. This poo gad baldi has most likely sailed for the Immediately after the receipt of this important intelligence my correspondent at Naples also me as follows:—‘‘ We have just heard that General Garibaldi bad quitted Palermo with 8,000 picked troops, destination unknown. The Court here is in the greatest agitation and fright. The King has ordered the immediate evacuation of Sicily.” The struggle will now commence in carnest. Garibaldi, tired, no doubt, by the brawls of the Sicilians, was only too glad to leave them to take care of themselves. He s2nt one of his officers to attack Messina, or at any rate make a show of attacking ‘that place. Then he sailed with his volunteers, osten- sibly to aid Bixio, but really to attack the Neapolitan territory. This isa new phase of the Italian queetion, but by no means an unexpected one. It is asserted that at Millaza, a town near Messina, the Garibaldians and the we itan ti had had two encounters, resulting in gtr 4 ob . i y Ligh f having gained The Royal Guard had attempted. to foroe Use National Guard ‘to shout ‘Down with the constitution,” which was resisted.
