ARAAAAAAAARAAR AAAS Part of Fowler's Building. posite the Herald Establishment, Destroyed. ‘At abo." baif-past ten o'clock last night the alarm of fire was giv.c? i Nassau street, and instantly great tongues of flame Were seen to be simultaneously burst- ing immediately op, ite to the Hynarp Buildings and from the printing office .°cupied by Charles Vintea, The fre broke out from al! the windows of the fourth and fifth atoried wt one and the same time. ‘The birth of the fire must baye been yery propitious, whatever werethe circumstances that led to it, for in less time than it takes to write, the destructive element had penetrated through the two upper stories and waa burning in the fiercest and most furious manner before apy one well knew what was up. The cry of ‘fire’ once given and taken up by the watch-towers of the city, our gallant firemen were very soon on the spot. Like true heroes, as they are, these noble young fellows soon threw themselves into the breach to contend with the relentless enemy whom they bad met and defeated om so many hard-fought fields. With, the rapidity of thought their engines were wheeled to the scene of the conflagration, and stout hearts and strong hands began to pour on steady streams of water on the devouring flame. The fire burned so hotly that it could not be got under for some time. The firemen, however, did not for a moment relax in their efforts, for whe some were busily labourizg at tbe engines, others were rashing into the very midst of the flames and using every en- deavor to save such fragments of the property as were not consumed in the burning store. They worked indus triously, heroically and with a united will, and to their unshakea industry must many of our merchants in fhe vicinity of this threatening fre be indebted for the safety of their establishments. The first engine that arrived and was put into working order after the alarm was given waa the Protection En- gine No. 5, which did essentiai service in the earlier stage of the fire. Ina very short time there were up- wards of fourteen engines on the ground, and the way in which the young firemen attached to each company exerted themselves to save private property is above all praise. The steam fire engine was brought to the corner of Fulton and Nassau streets in less than twenty minutes after the fire broke out, and as soon as steam could be got up began to pour on an overwhelming and continuous stream of water. In cases of this kind steam demonstrates ita mighty and untiring powers over failing bone and muscle, snd last night the steam fire fully attained, and poke na tha stasest thas tie mals sieceaeaaes foc expect. But the other engines, manned by stalwarth and brave fellows, never quitted their post for a moment, but every man worked determinedly while a single stick was deh burning. The fire was ove of those terribly stubbora ones that sometimes baitie and dispirit the boldest firemen, and it must be confessed that if less energetic men than the fire- men of New York had the duty to discharge of extin- guishing the flames, it would have goue very hard with the whole square of buildings from Nassau to William street, if not, » much farther.
