(From the St. Louis Republican, July 24) ‘A despatch to this office from Jefferson City states that ‘about noon yesterday some forty convicts confined in the pebitentiary made a simultaneous attack upon the gate of the prison, and succeeded in forcing it open and effecting their escape. Twenty of them were recaptured, and about twenty more are still at large. In the effort seven were severely wounded and three were killed outright by the guards of the prison. Deputy Warden Ritchey, in attempting to arrest their progress, was attacked by the notorious George Harmon und another prisoner. They attemoted to wrest his pistol from his and in the struggle it was discharged, woundin itchey slightly in the wrist. Mr. Ra came to '# relief, and succeeded in knocking down and securing Harmon. Our informant states that the escaped prisoners will doubtless be recaptured, as guards and citizens are out inevery direction. As might be ex- pected, great excitement exists in Jefferson City oon- fequent upon this bold, and to a certain extent, successful attempt of these desperadoes, Harmon, one of the convicts in the revolt at the Penitentiary in Jefferson city yesterday 2 is a well known character in the criminal lendar of this city, and has long been recognized as a desperado who for yearg evaded the clutches of the law.
