Hicks, alias Johnson, recently convieted of murder and piracy, will suffer the penalty of his crimes om Friday next, He will be executed upon Bedloe’s Island, in the ‘arbor, and the gallows will be erectod just outside the Yort. The gallows will be that ordinarily used at the Tombs prison, Bot yery few persons ‘unofficially connected with the execution will be allowed upon the ieland, anda de- tachment of the government troops stationed there will guard the landing against the ingress of mere spectators. The execution will be conducted under the charge of Captain Rynders, United States Marshal, Hicks baving ‘bean tried for a crime against the United States, and con wieted vefore a United States Court. A view -of the execution may be obtained from the bay, however, cand probably, if the day be clear, from tho Battery, also, aud it is rumored that, besides the numerous vessels swith private parties on beard, which will swround the scene of the execution, several public excursions have Been arranged, so that al! who wish may, at a cheap rate, ‘take their fill of horrors. None of these excursions have een advertised as yet, and it is more than probable that, even if they are publ.cly advertise: at all, the announce ment will contain no mention of the execution, since it is very unlikely that any one wonld publicly prociain that he intented to make money from the show of a dying inan’s last agonies, There is but little pity expressed for the criminal in any circle, sand even his family express their horror at his crimes cand their appreciation of the justice of his panishmeut. His wile, who seems to be a most miserable little woman, valone seems to cling to Hicks in the hour of his deserved misfortune, and she exhibits much feeling upon the sub- fect. By the kindness of Mr. Sutton, the warden of the prison, Mre. Hicks has becn allowed to visit her busband Awice a week for the past six weeks; but now that the ‘time for the execution has 0 nearly arrived, this privi- lege has very properly been withdrawn, When Hicks swas informed of this fact he was at first very angry, and delivered a jong tirade of abuse agaiust the warden and the United States Marshal; but afterwards, being remon- . -Strated with npon the a he apologized for what he had said, and declared that he could not but acknowledge that Uns precantionwy pegnare was perfectly right. Beyond this wifely feeling no one seems to have be 4 re- gard for this triple murderer. The life of Hicks has 80 overcrowded with poene.s and his hands are stained 80 deeply with blood, that he seems removed from all human pity and compassion. Stil, this is no reasou why his execution shold be made a public spectacle, and it is ‘to be hoped that the public of New York will resolutely frown down any such excursions as those Ww which we aye referred. Hicks’ conduct in the Tombs haz been quite exemplary, ‘and of iate le has given his keepers very little trouble, except from apprehensions of his escapo or suicide. Ho does not seem to realize either his crime or the death which awaits bim, All moral perception and sensibility seem to be wanting in his organization. Ife acknow- nevertheless, that bis sentence is perfectly just, by ‘8 that, if the punishment were teu times as great, it would be no more he deserves; ag Me how: ever, not as if penitent, but as if exalted by yy the conscious- mess of the multiplicity and enormity of hiscrimes. A seonfession, purporting to be taken down from his own dire, and showing is complicity in over one hundred is ennounced as in pres®, and will be published ‘on rise ‘or the bene‘it of his family. Whether or _ this confersion io peanine it is impossible at pregent to state, since Hicks has alti ly admitted and denied the truth of the statements a! in the — in ~orime of which he is convicted. His confession made to ‘Mr. Sutton, the warden, and already published in these columns, wos undonbtedly genuine, and contained the alterwards, from interested: true facts of the case, whi smotives, he was induced to deny, Two dittereut “con- restos will be in the market by Friday, aud will pro- vably be very extensively but which is the real ~one, iC either be really his own declarations, we are not ‘yet informed. Great doubts nay a'so be entertained in regard to the troth of many of the statements of the con- feasion, even if it be genuine; for Hicks has exhibited, at “times, a disposition to rake himeeif appear a moster’ of crime, apd (hus to secure an immortality of horror at the expense of sober truth, . His complicity im the piracy on doard the Saladin, for instance, been often asserted, seems, linpossibte that he show a ma all The that Ma told him = that ession appeared it would show him gailty of over a busdred murders, many of which have no doubt been the products of a mind never over strong, and now occupied with aecraze in regard to the subject of marder; apd others Lave probably been designedly intro- duced to make the work sell well, and to new§ hor- rors to a life already sufliciently fevolting.
