The reputed ~wealth of Mr. Walton, and the peculiar relations he bore ‘to his wife and stepsons, lend an unusual ‘degree of interest to the - case. Yesterday Coroner Jackman was engaged in subponaing vwitnesses, and making other arrangements for the ¢on- ‘tinuation of the inquest on Thursday. Some new and im- portant facta were developed, but we refrain from giving publicity to them until they are elicited on the in- vestigation. The most noticeable feature of yesterday's proceedings, however, was the surrender of Edwin Jefferds, the young- ~@6t Of the deceased’s stepsons. He made his appearance at the Jefferson Market Police Court at an carly hour in ‘the morning, and voluntarily gave himself into the cus- ‘tody of policeman Burlinson. The prisoner was imme- diately taken before Justice Connolly, who committed “him to await the actien of the Coroner. The prisoner is 2 ra about eighteen years old, is thick set, and eyes and hair. He has been en; as a conductor on the Sixth Avenue Railroad, and no doubt many of the patrons of that ‘line = acquainted with his face. Young Jeilerds says nows nothing at all about the murders, and claims hat he was in bed at home when the occurrence took place. He professes his entire ignorance as to the whereabouts of ‘bis elder brother, but says he has no doubt Charles will ‘returo 2 tag city at the earliest possible moment on the ‘ipt of the hew’s of his Stepfather's 's death. No trace has yet been discovered of the whereabouts ‘of Charles Jefferds, Vpee tn noneageney, a the police have been actively engaged in searching for him. He was seen on Sunday week, and then by his mother on the day in ques- ‘tion, Dut since then —on has been heard of him. The few facts that leaked out before the ‘Coroner’s jury have served to increase the excitement; ‘but little, however, was there told of the many trials ‘that Mr. Walton had gone through with, and the hours of cagony that he had spent on account of his family troubles, «which, from all accounts, have perhaps been the cause of this death. It has been a long time since he has had peace Or felt that his life was really safe. He was married to the person now called his wife about two years ago, and within a short time after his marriage it appears that he suspected her with not being ‘what be supposed she was when he married her. But few months elapsed after their marriage before he com- plained to his friends about her, and seemed to be greatly ‘troubled. At one time he had nearly retired from “business, having amasse@ wealth enough to satisfy him; Dot as his domestic difficulties began to prey upon hhim he extended it, as if anxious to drown his trials in the more extended routine of business. ‘That, however, did not jhave the desired effect. From day to day his anxiety increased, “Daving, as the witness testified, seen enough to make his home apything but inviting to him. At length matters reached that stage when he considered forbearance no ‘Monger a virtue, and about the Ist of June filed a com- splaint against Mrs. Walton for inhuman treatmént, ask- Sing only for a divorce from bed and board. Fully a week will elapse, however, before she is in the prime condition intended by the Directors, but rather than longer disappoint the impatient throng, they have given orders to open the ship as soon as she can be got even moderately ready. Much varnishing, painting, cleaning and joiner work yet remains to be done, but this will be attended to after the close of each days exhibi- tion. Laborers were on duty all last night, and today no doubt thousands will drop their doilars in the strong coffers of the Great Eastern. For the accommodation of the public two gangways or platforms have been erected, running from the ship to the shore—one being forward and the other on the larboard quarter. A series of ticket houses have likewise been erected on the dock, 50 arranged as to avoid confusion. Here the visitor wil! provide himself with the needful; then, proceeding towards the after gangway, show his ticket to the officer stationed at its foot, and pass into the ship through an immense square hole in its side. This will land bim on the lower deck. Moving onward, he will encounter a pair of stairs and another officer. Giving up his ticket here, and passing through a “ turn stile’”— a four armed revolving gate, which is familiar to every person who has lived in the country—he will be automati- cally registered as one of the visiters to the Great Eastern. He is now at liberty to enjoy his curiosity to-ite full bent, and may, if he chooses, spend the balance of the day in wandering through the mazy labyrinths which he will encounter.
