Fires in New York. FIRE IN EAST mere STREWT—LOSS ABOUT About seven o'clock last night a fire broke out in the steam-planing mill in Eighteenth street, near ayenue A, owned by George Tugnot. The fire, when first seen, was burning near to the planing machine, and it is supposed was caused by friction of a journal. Mr. Robert Sherwood, who had charge of the premises, had just paid off the hands,and was leaving the mill’ when the fire was discovered. The dames spread ‘rapidly, and soon extended to the staircase fac- tory of Burroughs & Bane, in a rear building on the next lot, and thence to the front building, occupied by J. J. Vah Pelt, a8 an office, carriage house and stables, and by his coachman as a dwelling. All three buildings were totally destroyed. The joes of Mr. Tugnot on building, machinery and stock, will amount to about $12,000, Lusured for $8,000. Mr. Van Peit’s loss on building will amount to about $10,000, and on stock, &c., $3,000. Mathews, produce dealer in Jefferson Market, and John Walton, who recent- ly resided at 258 West Twenty-third street, The name of the murderer we bave not learned. It appears that the deseased persons and the murderer bad a quarrel of some nature, and that they accidentally met at the hour named above, at the corner of Figh- teenth street and Third avenue. The murderer immediate. ly pointed a pistol at Walton and shot him in the head, behind the ear,and then ran up Eighteenth street to Irving place, and then down Irviog place, pur- sued by Mathews, who overtook him near Sixteenth Street, when Mathews was turned upon and shot in the | breast in the region of the heart.
