The Stock Exchange was irregular to-day. Some stocks were higher, in consequence of a revival of demand from outside; others fell off. The general market continues to be unfavorably affected by the Pacific Mail mystery, and the uncertainty attending political affairs in Europe. Parties who till re cently were buyers are holding off to see the result of Garibaldi’s landing in Sicily. It is not likely that any general disturbance can arise from that event; neither France nor Aus- tria can well interfere between the com- batants; and it is hardly necessary to add that & contest between the King of Naples and Gari- baldi is of no more consequence to commerce than a feud between two African tribes. Still, capitalists are timid, and for a time the bulls on the Stock Exchange show less courage than they did. The Pacific Mail affair continues to affect the market, though the stock itself was better today. There is nothing new from the office of the com- pany. A few hundred shares have been presented over and above the authorized capital; but they come in so slowly that it looks as though they would not exceed a thousand in all, if they prove 80 many. The accountants employed by the di- rectors are steadily pursuing their investigation. ‘Thus far they have detected no fraudulent entries; they expect to discover, in the course of a few days, traces of the issue of the unauthorized shares: when, of couree, the parties to whom they were transferred will account for their coming into their | Busimess of the United State® Assay Office possession.
