Surnyy, May 27, 1850, The comparative tables of the forwiyu trade of the port for the week ending yesterday Miuw « digi nished import of foreign goods anda rednced export of specie, as comparel with the corresponding week of last year; they like wise indicate an increas- ed export of domestic produce. In other words, the country is buying fewer foreign goods than last year, losing less gold, and sending ayroad more breadstafis, cotton, provisions and miscellaneous goods, The aggregate imports since January 1 are now over $5,000,000 less than those of last year; the aggregate exports of domestic produce during the same period seven millions more. Thus, notwithstanding that onr specie export for the came period is about twelve millions less than that of the same months of last year, the balance stands about as it did then, ws the following table gesied that arracgemenis be mede with Jona f Fors, 4; second class names, and names not generally | known 728.210; loans on call,5 per cent, with exceptions at 6 47 where the collaterals are not favorites, and at 4 a 4} where the lender seeka ‘pe borrower. The demand for money aM yng the broke:s has not been very active of late, 4+ the dis- count houses short pxper is very "ch in demand. Lenders have been doing ® poor bnsiness for a Joog time now, and ty have made up their Minds that a better #96 is cowing—for them. We contess that, €S* cially in view of the action of our bauks, we ve nothing to justify any immediate increase iP the demand for money. Until new uses for mov ey are found, the price must rale low. Foreign exchange was moderately active last week, at the rates which were noticed in our last weekly review. We quote bankers’ bills on Lon- don 109§ a 3, with a few very good bills, not strict- ly first clase, at 1093; on Paris, 5.125 a 13) a 134. A fair business was done in sight bills on Paris— drawn against bullion—at 5.114. Some commer- cial bills are in market at 109 a }; bat they are scarce—as usual at this season. At this time last year the leading bankers were getting 110) @ j for their bills, and the demand was very lively indeed. The margin for profit on bills drawn at 1095 and 6.13; against bullion is small, after freight and insurance are paid ; but still there is a margin, and it ie not likely that for some months to come the specie shipped weekly will average less than the shipment of last weck. We need hardly add that this amount, or one considera- bly greater, could be specied without incon- veniencing either the banks or the commercial community. ‘The course of the stock market during the past month has been as follows:— i i AplD. The market closed yesterday quite stesdy. The receipts up to the closing of the iast cotton circulars footed up 4,308,- 000, bales against 3,558,600 to same date last year, and 2,562,000 to same date in 1953. If we receive acouple of hundred be'es between this and Ist September—a moderate estimate—the four and o haif million point will be passed. From the South the reports are favorable for the growing crop. In some localities there have been com- plaints of a want of rain, but these have been fol lowed by annouitcements of copious showers; 80 that thus far there is no ground for appréhension. It is, of course, too soon to begin to form estimates Breadstuils were active last week, espe ly grain of all kinds. ‘fhough the recent advices from ing | land have heen more favorable for the growing | erops, and consequently less favorable for prices, | there is 6 coaviction in many minds here that Great Britain cannot dispense with a large supply of ce real food from us this summer. Hence we note shipments of both corn and wheat to Eagland and Beotland, in the face of an appa joss to the shipper. If the British horvest | last year were as short as they were repre | sented to be, the fact ought to tell upon the mo kets within thirty days. The movement of bread stats in the West coatiaues vory active, and it is clear that we shall have no scarcity this spring. Corn especially comes in from Southern Minois fa enormous quautities. The prospects of the grow ing crop of wheat and corn are very good in Michi gan, lowa, Wisconsin and Northern L!inois; fa th: valley of the Mississippi we hear complaints o/ Grouth. It is, however, too soon to form opiaions of the harvest. The movement of specie last week was against | the banks, though not to any grea’ extent. On Wednesday there was a shipment of $120,510, and yesterday over a million; of this latter, however | the banks had the benefit for five of the six days in their averages, and its loss will not be felt til! next week. Besides this, the Sab-Treasury he« | token money from the banks, The balance last , | evening stood at $6,982,660, against $5,964,148 at the close of last woek, and $J,752,084 at the cor responding date last year. On the other hand, the banks received money from Philadelphia and Bul timore; so that were it not for the shipment of Saturday, May 19, bo great change ia the specie average would probably be shown to morrow. Northern bills are sising at New Orleans, and we are rapidly approaching the pe riod at which a regalar supply of coin may be ex pected from the South. The Northern Light, from Aspinwall, arrived last evening, with $1,519,709 in specie on freight. The last specie average shown by our banks was $23,735,193, against $22,789,"3, | om the previous Monday, and $71,519,822 at the corresponding date last year. Asa gonoral rule, the course of tho money market affords a pretty fair indication of what the banks are doing; but for (he past few weeks it has misled every*one who has relied npon it. Though money has grown cheaper from week to week and paper scarcer, the banks have for more thana month pursaeda policy of steady contraction, with aYising movement of spe- cle, The loans have declined from $130,606,731 on April 7, to 124,958,380 last week--a contraction of nearly six millions in the face of a declining in- quiry for money and an increaring supply of coin. This decline in the bank discounts is doubtless in port involuntary. Business is comparatively quiet; merchants ave trading within their means, and borrowing less ; there is less paper to discount. At the the same time, it is possible that some of the hanks foresee that their peril, like their profits, mast be looked for in the hour of general prosperity, and are anticipating the prosperous times which are at hand, by # timely contraction. The following table will show thet, notwitustand- ing the recent contraction, our banks are as mach expanded as usnal at this season:— Bask Extasmos, Mir 25. scribed in our last weekly review, exercised an un- favorable influence on the market all last week, and until Friday speculators gave the preference to the bear side. On Friday it began to ba gene- rally understood that the overissve in Pacific Mail conld not amount to enough to permanently depro" ciate the value of the stock, and a general re- covery took place—the speculative stocks closing about where they stood a week ago, with the ex ception of one or two leading stocks, which are higher. The most marked advance is,in Hlinois Central, in Michigan Central and in Hudson River. The two last named stocks are being bought up in Boston; the former has been undergoing a transformation in London by which part of its debt has been con- verted into stock. If the earnings increase at their present ratio, and the expeises are kept down to the lowest per centage hitherto attainable, the com- pany tay earn, in 1860, interest on iis debt. The increase of earnings just new Is very large indeed — and, as it is on corn, the profits must be large. The Pacific Mail mystery remains a mystery still: The company have now paid up the dividend on nearly the whole of their capital, and the officers have stamped as genuine certificates for 39,736 shares of stock. Jt is known that there are some small lots of stock which have not yet been presented. A holder at Panama has something like 20 shares; a bolder here 67; another, in the country, something hke 150, besides some others’ It is, therefore, pretty clear that there has becn an overisene, and the qnestion arises, to how mnch does it amount? According to the stock ledger, it would seem to amount to something under 2,000 shares. But the examination which has been ef- fected of the ledger shows that it has been posted with euch carelessness that it cannot serve as a reliable guide. Some parties—brokers in Wall street—are credited with 200 shares, while they ouly own 100; others with 270, when they only own 200; others with 100, owning none at all. It is possible, therefore, that this amount of 2,000 shares may be considerably reduced when the parties in whose names the stock stands are all communicated with. Several brokers, with that high sense of commercial honor which charac- terizes the members of the board asa class, have made haste to disown the stock of which the books of the Pacific Mail Company showed them to be the possessors. On the whole, we see no reason to alter the opinion which we expressed some days since, namely, that an overissue has taken place, but that it is not large enough to affect the credit of the company, or the permanent value of its stock. Some reports of railway earnings for the third week in May have come to hand, and we subjoia them in tabular form: 16-22 May, '69, 16-22 May, "00.
