SVENTIETE DAY'S PROCEEDINGS. repested flashes of vivid lightaing, which, ia elmort every instance, strikes down some pro- Ininest object, and often destroys human life While such is the scene in a city or town uring the prevalence of a tornado, the effects in the country are hardly less disastrous, and still more appalling. Forests of huge trees are bent and twisted by the force of the storm; veterans that have stood for centuries are torn from their roots and flung across the roads; Cattle are swept away and farm houses demo- isbed. The extent of couniry which these fear- Yul visitations traverse is variable; sometimes At te Mmited to o few miles in breadth, and Dometimes it spreads over a hundred or more, ‘while the storm often extends in length through an entire State, and as frequently is limited to B very small locality. In the late instance the tornado commenced at Louisville, Kentucky, and, following the val- fley of the Ohio river, swept along in a north- easterly direction as faras the little town of Marietta, on the Obio shore, a distance proba- bly of about two hundred and fifty miles awbere it eeems to have expended its force. It ‘As fortunate that there tornados are not of “more frequent occurrence—though hardly a sum- mer passes over without our hearing of one or more of them devastating some portion of the ‘Western States—for though of brief duration, ‘they are almost as terrible while they last as ‘the simoom, before which the wayfarer on the - desert is compelled to fall prostrate. Tue Dewinqvents is Tux Boston Potice— ‘Zhe discovery that the Boston police force comprised within it a number of men who, for two or three years past, have been committing ‘Durgieries dnd Jarcenies on an extensive scale, has created no little excitement among the siaid and unimpassioned inhabitants of that sober city. It is not to be wondered at, indeed, that eome alarm should arise from the announcement that the guardians of the pro- perty of citizens have abused the trust reposed jn them; and used the responsibility of their office to plunder the very property they are employed and sworn to protect. We give to day some more particulars of this extraordi- + mary effair, by which it will be seen that the police of one entire district, almost without an exception, were a regularly organized gand of ” - burglars—were furnished with skeleton keys and other appliances of the peofession, and have been carrying on their trade for a num- ber of years; and what is, perhaps, still more startling, this fact bad long been suspected, and yet many of these men had been reap- pointed to the police from year to year. The matter is now undergoing investigation by the authorities, and it appears that the whole “police system of Boston is to have a general overbauling. We would suggest that our new Police Commissioners should look into our loose and abominable system at the same dime. If its secret workings were closely ex- ‘amined perhaps more startling revelations would be made than have recently come to light in Poston. From the mode in which our suspicion or proof against temptation. Orsratic Ovation yor Tax Jaraxese Ex- passy.—The little Napoleon of Irving place, ‘always on the lookout for a new sensation Gespstched an agent to Washington with Jetter offering to the Japanese Embassy compliment of a special performance at the Academy of Music. The invitation accepted, and the programme is ges of preparation. The performance given in the daytime, asthe higher class Ja- panece do not attend public exbibittons in the evening, and rarely go out after dark for any purpose whatever. A fall epera will be given, and a work which affords a good opportanity for both sound and show will be chosen. After the opera « promenade concert is thought of, with a dress parade and drill of some of our best State troops. Asall the crack regiments will'probably desire to appear on this occasion, It will be us well, perhsps, to form a battalion which shall include selections from each. With such a programme, the Japanese matinée will be one cf the greatest of metropolitan attrac- fons, snd will bring together thousands of pretty omen from tbe city and suburbs. The great jams which greeted Utlman’s best star— Piccolomini—will be quite outdone in the tush oi crivolice which will appear ia Irving Place at the Japacese levee. It is to be hoped that the ofsir will be satis- factory to all parties concerned, and that the ladies @ itl keep a sbarp lovkout for Tommy. The Uyster Sloop Tragedy.
