FINANCIAL AND COMMERCI Farpay, May 18-6 P. M. The street was startled this morning by ramors that there wos something wrong in the books of the Pacific Mail Steamship Company, and early in th noon it became generally known that Mc. Frederic Hofman, secretary of that company, and specially entrusted with charge of the stock ledger, had disappeared on Tuesday evening last, leaving his books ia some confusion, Mr. Ogden, of the Custom Honse, oad a clerk from the office of Howland & Aspinwall, were sent for yesterday morning, and directed to institute a thorough exami nation into the condition of the books. At the time we write, the result of their sorutioy bas not trans pired. The talk in the street is of course about “an over issne,’ the public being particularly sen itive on this point since the Schuyler affair, Ir si seems Coubtful, however, whether any over issue of consequence can have taken place, and It is quite likely that nothing more serious has occurred than some errors in the posting of the books. The reader will find below a communication from the company onthe subject. To morrow the recently declared dividend of ten per cent becomes paya- ble, and we are glad to find that the company pro pore to pay the dividend as announced—simply in- sisting that stockholders shall present their cet ficates when they come to claim their dividends. The following is the company’s statement: — Statement or mie Company. H. DAVIDGE, Presiden: Mart Steamer Co., New Youw, Moy 18, 1860 Mr. Hoffman, the missing secretary, is a young man whose character has always stood well in the street. He was bronght up by Gardner G. How- land, Sr., Esq., and enjoyed the confidence of that gentleman and his partners. He has never been suepected of speculating in stocks, or of living extravagantly. Bat for the unlucky fact of his dis appearance—which occurred immediately after he had heea directed by the president of the company to hand over the stock ledger to the cashier, in order that a list of stockholders might be prepared for the coming dividend day—the present snspicions would never have been aroused. His friends, who are wealthy, have already agreed to make good to the ccopany any amotnt of which he may have defrauded them. We notice no change in the money market to- dey. The brokers report, as before, extreme ease tent), wh other b for and the banks complain of very light offerings of paper. The rates are 5 per cent for call loans and ble name first class paper; for 4 a 6 months paper, of the highest grade, the rate is 6} a 64. The Sab-Treasury is doing a very light busi uses Today the receipts were $84,235, nearly ai of which was trom customs; the payments, $102,- 029; the balance this evening, 36,856,993. The exchange market was quiet today at yes- terday's quotations, to wit:—109j @ j for bankers’ sterling, and 109j 4] for mercantile names; for rancs 5.1244 133. The supply of mercantile bills is good, and the demand from the Importers quite Nght. The steamers of to-morrow have about half a million engaged, which may be increased to ££00,000 a $700,000 to-morrow morning. The following are the last quotations of sight ex hange on New York at the cities mentioned, the votations being in all cases for gold:— again to-day, the ‘Chief feature being, as yesterday, the flactaations in Pacific Mail. It opened at 93, rose to 44, clor ing at this price at this morning's board; then, on street rumors of an over issue, fell off to 874, closing in the afternoon at §8} bid, against 93§ yesterday. Central was also a fraction lower. The demand for railroad bonds was uanusaally active and better prices were obtained for almost all des criptions. The volume of business done to-day ia stocks as well as bonds was quite large, and the oateide purchasers were numerous.
