FINANC\AL AND COMMERCIAL. Tuvrspay, May 17—6 P. M. There is not the least change to qaote in the money market. The ingniry for paper is livety; some of the banks complain of the light offering for discount. Among the brokers to-day loans the payments $100,710; balance this evening $0, 875,387, A The foreign exchange market for Satarday’s steamers bas hardly opened yet; bankers are ask- ing the old figures, 109j a j, less @ brokerage, for 60 day bills on London; and 5.12} a 133 for 60 day bills on Paris. There are seme commercial bills in market at 109} @ 4, and 6.15 opward. It is impos- sible to state how much gold will go on Saturday, as much will of course depend upon the demand for bills to-morrow; but from present indications the shipment will probably exceed half a million, and may exceed three-quarters. The following are the last quotations of sight ex- change on New York at the cities mentioned, the quotations being in all cases for gold:. The feature of the 6 market to-day was a startling decline in Pacific Mail stock, which fell from 98 a 99 yesterday to 904 after the first board to-day, then rallied, sold at 93, and closed 95} bid. All corts of rathors were afloat with regard to the cause of the decline. At the company’s office nothing is known that can justify it, and the two heaviest holders of the stock both affirm that the fall is @ mere brokers’ moyement. One story was that Commodore Van- derbilt had obtained a contract for reopening the Nicaragua route. We believe that the Commodore hes @ trunk full of contracts and transit granta; but we don’t think he classes them among his assets. He can open the ronte whenever our go- | vernment agrees to protect him; till then, transit grants, either in bis hands or -in others, are mere opened, and the Pacific Mail Company will be the largest gainer by the event, for the passengers aad freight will have to be taken from San Juan del | Sur, or the Pacific terminus of the Nicaragua tran- sit route, to San Francisco, ia their boate. They are sole, exclusive owners of the only boats in existence on the Pacific which can passenger line along the coast o this continent. No one else has boats, or coal, or workshops, or any appliances for run: ning @ line; with all the capital ia the world it would take a rival concern a year to provide itself | Waste paper, If that protection has been se. cured—which we do not believe—the route will be | & ! with these necessaries; so that, fur some time to | * come, no fear of serious opposition need be enter. tained, We presvme the stock to be good for an- nual dividends of 20 per cent for maoy years—with ordinary prudence and good fortune on the part of the managers, Tho heavy decline in Pacific Mail may be said to have affected the whole market, The best bid for Panama this morning was 158; it in the afternoon 139 bid, against 142 at the close yesterday. The West ern shares were injuriously affected by the traffic return for the second week of May on the Galena, which shows decline of $4,029; that stock declined to 64}, closing 64; bid, against 653 at the close yesterday. The May earnings of the Galena last year were $122,007; it was in fact the best month of the year till September. It is not expected that May this year will show any great increase, Rock Island fell off to 694, closing that bid, against 69] at the close yesterday. Other Western shares were generally a fraction lower— | epparently from sympathy with Galena. Erie stock rose to 233, then fell back with the rest of the mar ket, closing 224 bid, against 224 yesterday after- noon. The steady progress of the recovery of this property, and the increasing confidence shown in it by foreign capitalists, whose orders now come by every mail, are the most encouraging symptoms in our failway world at the present time. A foreigner, whose investments im this country have been large, writes to say that ho expects to see Erie stock dealt in at our board before very long at the old prices—60 a 70 percent. Central fell eff to 82 | closing 81 bid. There was alarge bnsiness done in State stocks and railway bonds at fuil prices, The Frie issues are in demand at an advance. This afternoon the market active, bot stocks closed dull at the following quotations:— Virginia 6's, 92a 4; Missouri 6's, 844 8}; Canton, 214 aj; Cambert Coal preferred, 144; Pacitic Mail, York Central, 81] a 82; Erie, 2248 46 oj; Harlem, 13 a 4; | wana gy " jog, 42 a 1; Michigan Central, 48a 4; Michigan Sonthern and N.
