The management of the former house surprised their rivals last week, and achieved a brilliant coup d'état by the adoption of @ democratic scale of prices, which took the musical public by storm. The little star of Irving place, however, managed to ‘maintain her position and divide the popular favor with her Broadway rivais. The present is announced, both at Irving place and Winter Garden, as the last week of the season, and great efforts have been made by both to insure ® brilliant ter- mination of the struggle for popular favor and the opers, tc championship. At the Academy, Madame Gazzaniga is announced for two evenings prior to her departure for Europe, and will make her débuton Tueaday evening, in her original rdle of Violeta in ‘‘La Traviate.” ‘‘Moses in Egypt,’’ which had a successful run last week, will be given to-night, with Patti, Brignol!, and a star cast. At Winter Garden, ‘‘La Juive,” which was decidedly successful last week, gives piace to Verdi’s ‘‘Nebuchad- nezzar,’’ which is apmounced for Tuesday night, when Signor Mirandola, the new basso, wil! make bis début. ‘Laura Keene closed ® very successful season on Satur- day night, and took a farewell benefit. She sails for Ku- rope this week, whither she goes in quest of novelties for the fall and winter season. ‘The summer season at Laura Keene's theatre will com- menoce on Wednesday of this week, under the direction of Mr. Joseph Jefferson, who holds the first position in his Hine on the American stage. In the creation of one rile he made the fortune of a metropolitan manager, and now assumes the reins for himself. Like Robson, of London, Mr. Jefferson belongs to the drama of the present day, and is an eminently progressive artist. John Wood, Miss ©. Jefferson, and Mrs. Chanfrau. The mise &® swéne is to be entirely new, and ail the minor parts in the play are distributed among good artists. The spe- clality of the theatre will be light pieces, vaudevilles, petite comedies, farces and burlesques, suitable to the searon, Several sterling plays were produced at Wallack’s last week, and among them some of the finest comedies in the English language, including ‘‘The School for Scandal” and “Bhe Stoops to Conquer.”” To-night will be produced, for the firet time in this city, a new and original comic drama, by Tom Taylor, entitled the “Overiand Route,” which has been running for over two months at the Haymarket theatre, London. The cast includes Lester Wallack, Brougham, Blake, Dyott, Waloot, Mrs. Hoey, Miss Gan- non, and, in fact, the entire strength of Mr. Wallack’s ad- mirabie company. At the Bowery theatre eevera! benedita have been taken uring the past week. ‘The Biack Knight,” aud a new jocal farce, entitled ‘The Charleston Convention, or Boarding the Delegates,” are announced for the week. At the New Bowery, “ Harry Biake; or, The Man Who Travels on bis Muscle,” the “* Bronze Donkey” and “ B. B; or, The Benicia Boy in England,” were run last week with fair success. The + Biack Cat of Coventry,” anda fietic piece illuttrative of the inte fight, constitute the lead- ‘ing features of attraction at the New Bowery this week. “Blue Beard,’ which was produced at Nibio’s last week, bas been so far successful that it will be continued another week, when it will doubtless be superseded by a ew production now in active preparation. Jacobs, the Wizzard, and, we presume, the “original,’’ withal, bas been very successful at 444 Broadway, where he bas mystified and delighted large audiences during the past week. Curisty’s and Bryant's Minstrels each vie with tho other for public favor, the former at Niblo’s Saloon, and the Istter at Mechanica’ Hall, 472 Broadway. At Burnum’s “Dot; or, the Cricket on the Hearth,” har been the leading card of the Lecture Room for the last two weeks, and is still continued. Miss Emily Mostayer will take a benefit ai this establishment to-morrow night. Adame’ California Menagerie, corner of Thirteenth street and Fourth avenue, continues to attract crowds, Adams ‘being quite as much a curiosity in his way as the sea lion oF the pet grizzly. ‘The Philkarmonic Society of Brooklyn terminated its season on Thursday last with a grand concert at Beecher’s church, in which Patti, Brignoli, Madame Strakosch aad handsome compliments, which were warmly reeponded to by the audience. Whilst noticing the concluding performatice of the Brooklyn Philharmonic, it may be useful to similar socie- des to say a few words as to the result of its operstiona during the past winter. It should, in the first pisces, be ‘stated tbat the association is managed exclusively by ama- ‘Veurs, no artist being allowed to iuterfere with ite direc: tion. Iw erchestral performances are among the best ia the country, large sums being expending in render. Ing that feature as perfoct as possible. Notwithstan/ing that its orchestra oosts It $400 @ concert, with the prepa- ratory rehearsals, and that it engages in addition the first ‘vooal and instrumental talent that is to be had, it has the rare merit of being ® self-sustaining institation. Of fe- mae vocalists, there have eung successively at ite con- certs this winter, Gazzanigt, Johannsen, Albertin|, Gassier and Patti; of male, W. Cook, Centemor!, Beaucarde, Gasster and Prignoll. The music produced has been of the highest class, and the growing favor with which it Metered to 18 attested by Lhe fact that the society ends ite season with a bandsome balance in its troasurer’s Yanda. Working New York Out in the Sumshine. A MAY BUNDAY 8 PLEASUR(NG—HOBOKEN, BROOKLYN, AND STATEN I8L4ND—THE PARKS— CENTRAL PARK AND THE BATTERY. ‘Yesterday working New York took in breath for an other six day labors. New York humanity, like human- ity im general, likes enjoyment, and seoks it, after a week's confinement in workshops, stores and offices, not in the churches, but in the fresh, free air of spring. Sunny May, who bas for the last fow days boen decidedly in the sulks, smiled her sweetest yesterday; and the trees, who got by far the largest share of the sunshine and the air, which they were designed to divide with us, Deckoned tired man to their deep, sweet shades. Foot, large and small, strong and dainty, clumsy and well shaped, measured miles and miles yesterday, and were nope the more weary for it this morning; for rest is but change, of work and action in the pure air, and for plos- sure’s sake is the greatest luxury of rest. In spite, then, of the Sabbatarians, who would crib working New York within four walls—whether of home or church we care not—the people streamed through the streets and ool- lected im the parke and suburban grounds. We shall have better men and women from such a Sun- day. That best and purest of religion which nature eaches smiled in the sunshine, was carried by the breeze, rose in soft perfumes from the flowers, and was whispered from the green leaves and bushes. Such teachings make men better without their knowing it, as sweet music Graws unconscious tears from eyes unused to weep. THE SUBURBS. ‘To most people half of the enjoyment of a day’s plea suring consists in getting away from the city. The alr here seems hot and noisome, full of toil and care, and our broad rivers, like the waters of Lethe, seem to dispel all the anxieties and troubles about yesterday, to-day and to-morrow, which haupt us, like misshapen shadows, all the while we remain in the metropolis. Working New York, then, rushed for the ferry boats and over” crowded them. Droves of people came pouring out from the ferry houses and s>attered through the streets of our suburban cities, making for the green ficld, the trees and the open sky. At Hoboken the streets seemed jammed with pleasure seekers. ‘The gardens along Hud- ‘fon street and on the way to the filled, ana the Fields themselves were dottted thickly with of West Hoboken and Weebawken, on foot and Bone, parties. Many went beyond the Fields to the hts in Lapsingburg teame—three or four peraonsto one boree. The most of the visiters to Hoboken seemed to be Germans, but the [rish and American na tions were weil represented. The bright waters of the Hudaon, glancing in the sunshine al! the way along the road to the Elysian Fields, tempted many to the boa ta, aut 2, parties rowed bere and there, close along the shore, eeping time to the oar dips by those sweet songs which only Germans know how to sing, the liquid notes falling as charm:pgly as the waves rippled upon the pebbies Brooklya, Williamsburg and Kast New York bad also their phare of vititers. The many pleasure gardens sat private parks of these cities were crowded, and the re. fresbment saloons did @ thriv: business, The shady avenues of South Brookiym and the besch at the heat of ‘i atreet were througed with promonaders. Boautiful Brookiyn never appeured to better advantage than yor- terday, and the deliciout coolness of her tres lined strocts ‘Was never more thorougbly enjoyed and appreciated § As at Hoboken, the majority of the vistera to oar neighbors on the East were Germans. A more (avorite resort for the Irish and American por- tion of working New York appeare to be Staten Island.
