M. There is still no change in the money market. M sey lenders state that the amount of money offering is in excess of the supply of paper, and the tendency of the market is consequently toward lower rates, The indications are that the banks are expanding; two or three banks were endeavor- ing to-day to place heavy amounts on call. The Sub-Treasury lost to-day $135,566, received $135,124, of which $125,000 from duties—balance this evening $6,451,654. There is nothing doing in foreign exchange. Bonkers are holding at 109} a j for steriiug, and 5.134 for francs; thus far, at these rates, there is no demand. To-morrow, probably, the market will be more active; the indications are that the Satur- day shipment will not be much more than $500,000 a $600,000. The following are the last quotations of sight ex- change on New York at the cities mentioned, the quotations being in all cases for gold:—~ Chicago... St. Louis =f :par. .e heavy movement of produce would natural- ly cause exchange on New York to decline in the West but for the fact that the Western merchants have been very free purchasers of dry g00d3, gro- ceries, &c., in our markets. As it is, any advance in breadstafts will cause an over supply of Eastern bills at Chicago. There was a good deal of business on the Stock Exchange to-day, though with less excitement, till just at the close of (he day, than yesterday and day before. A good many speculators for the rise in Galena and Rock Island must have realized their profits, and the sales of New York Central were likewise very large. Central sold freely at the morning board at 803; it declined afterwards to 804; then rallied and closed at 80j bid, against £0 bid at the close yesterday. Galena fell back to 66, on the earnings for the past week; the stock, however, recovered afterward, closing at 64, bid, against 66) at the close yesterday. It w: hardly reasonable to look for a large increase in the earnings of the Galena; it has long been known that there is no corn on the road, and it seems doubtful, now whether the spring earnings will be much better than those of Inst year. Toledo advanced to $14, closing at that bid. Rock Island sold at 704, fell back to 693, rallied, and closed at 70j bid. The increase on this line will be very large this month. Illinois Central jumped up to 62}. The other Western stocks were quiet. Paci fic Mail fell off 3 on the dividend. State stocks, though qniet, were rather higher, and there was more inquiry for railway bonds. The accounts irom the West witn regard to the crop pros- pects continne to be satisfactory; Wiscon tin is the “only State from which we hear complaints. This afternoon the mar ket was quite rampant, and stocks closed firm. The advance of the past few days has more rapid than operators generally expected, aud will probably be speedily followed by a reac- tion. The recovery of public confidence in West ern shares must be gradual; it cannot come all at once, and parties who expect that the rise will be nochecked will not be the largest gainera. Each rise of two or three per cent will probably be ful- lowed by a reaction of half as much; operatora should watch the tide as it ebbs and flows, and operate accordingly.
