Beenan, like ‘‘Joe,” in Dickens’ ‘Bleak House,” seems estined to keep up a perpetual “move on.”’ Sinco I last ‘wrote you, warrants for the arrest of both parties, on ac- @ount of an anticipated breach of the peace, have been \¢ weed, and both have been obliged to use the greatest de gree of caution to guard themselves against arrest Heenan has moved again from his quarters near Bath, and tbey are both now said to be in quiet retreats, where the eye ofthe law cannot well tind them nor its arm each them, and ‘hey are industrioasiy at work preparing for the Hight, and are both said to be in elegant condition for tt Bor eeveral days pact, | learn from good authority, po: Remen haye been stationed for some taree miles on one of the railroads leading out of Loudon, and the one on which it was supposed the “excursion ttain’’ would pro Dabiy go, who have been furnished with a concerted set of signals, by which they could communicate all along to ‘Mee conetadies of the various counties through which the rate would pass, and to the one where it would etop, the fact of ite approach. But the “excursion” will not, proba- ‘Diy, take this route, and the fight will probably not take Plwce on the day named, not before it, but within two days after tne 16th of April. On Tuestiay no little excitemert was caused here among @be pairens of the ring and the backers of the men in the ternational combat’ by the genera! circulation of a weport, which gained general velief for a time, that the fight had actually taken place the day previous, aud that Sayers bad pet only defeated his adversary, but had Droken one of his lege. The Morning Star swallowed the story whole, and published a short report of the ight, some wag bad sent in to them, giving the particu jars of the round# which were not fought, and of several Witle incidents of the encounter, which did not occur. Tae ‘excitement caused by this imaginary resuit is a foretaste enly of that which will be exhibited when the real one is Keown. !t is almost needless to tell you that the stoty was an ‘April fool’ hoax. ‘Fhe odde in favor of Sayers are increasing, and two to ‘one bes been offered the past week without takers. Sul! there are not a few here among the backers of Heenan who exprese great confidence in him and a firm faith that be will win: and there is a considerable degree of belief tbat eome of the movements, which appear on the face of them to be unfavorable to Heenan, have been vesily made by his friends, who are quietly taking the edds. 1 cannot inform you better as to the state of feel- fog bere upon the coming fight than by giving you a cou- ple of extracts from the last number of the Sporting Life, which gives twice @ week ail the news it can gather in re. bation to the “great international contest.” The first ie in reference to the attempt to stop the fight, and is as {ol- dows :— Zs The isevue of warrants for the apprehension of Heenan ‘and Sayers in certain localities bas caused a sensation ia Dagilistie SS MPP UP sAsted even greaier Vigilance men. It will be a great relief when this long agony is over. aN Se 8 and the Boy drew the first claret. The crowd set up & great shout, which seemed to please Benicia better than it did Tom. Mr. Dallas, the American Minister, Low offered to bet two to one on the Boy, and the Jord Lien- tepantof Ireland at once took him up. Tom showed great rage, and struck the Boy with a large club, which knocked bim d Round Fourth,—The combat now became really must cal. ‘The brass band near Benicia struck up Yankee Doodle, and the one by Sayers, at the samo moment, Rule Britany Sayers now went at Heenan in earnest and hit bim under the right eye, and bruised it 80 that Boy had to get excused, and goto an "gebop, about a querter of a mile distant, and get some court plas- ter pat on it. Ween he came back he wicked, Sayers out of the ring, snd a Way through the crowd. Hound Fifth.—The ‘Setting Was now at odds in favor of the Boy, Sayers said he was tired, and propored to flip up cents and thus decide the contest. Heenan would not consent to this; bat young Prince Alfred, in order to stimulate Sayers and keep his courage up, took him round to acorner grocery and treated him, aod he came back feeling better. m Tom got back, George Peabody, the London banker, entered the ring with him, and held a emetiing bottle up to Tom’s nose. The Roy knocked Sayers down, and as he fell he yit Peaboby and knocked him down too. Round Sizth—The seconds of Sayers stated that it looked like raining, and unless the men should hurry they might get wet. Benicia said he dkin’t care. Jt was ar- ranged that there should be no more pretending to strike when they were not gto, and that they showd not Godge each other’s blows. They wrestied, and both fell together, neither of them hurt. Round Seventh.—Before beginning this round the Boy went into ® store and got weighed. He turned the scales only at 172, having lost twenty-three pounds since the be- ginuing of the fight. Being so much lighter, he became more active and lively, and sprang upon Sayers with the agility of a cat, bearing him down to the ground. T omit the details of ‘the next twenty-two rounds, for fear the Atlantic telegraph wil! break down before I can get them over, and come at once to the round which de- cided the contest. Thirtieth and last Round.—As soon as they entered the ring, the Boy brought his two flat hands together, one on each side of Sayers, and reduced the British champion to f stato of jelly, in which unhappy condition he was borne from the field, The American eagle then spread herself. ‘The Benicia Boy bas been offered the choice of several principalities, four popular hotels, an admiralty in the Kureian navy, and the situation of fighting editor on the London times. He declines them ail, preferring to enter upon public life a different way, and will to. morrow morp- ing run for Parliament on the Newmarket course. A COMPLIMENTARY SCPPER TO HEENAN. A complimentary supper was given to Heenan Inst evening, after the fight, when a number of letters from distinguished men were read. Much digappointment was expressed at the absence of the Hon. Horace Greeley from the fight, as it was thought that ke might have given Heenan some useful bints on bome protection, * ‘A long letter from Gen. James Watson Webb, was re- ceived. The upehot of it was, that the true way to fight was to avoid fighting. James Gordon Bennett, Feq., wrote simply that he did not write for apythivg bezides the HeRaLp, except the Mew York Ledger, and, therefore, he could not send them a letter. Judge Douglas cent a long essay on squatter area ty; but Beenan and Sayers both seid they would prefer to fight anytime rather than read it. Ab express freight train of thirteeen cars arrived loaded exclusively with a letter from GovernorfWise, in which his Excellency stated that it was the eleventh of the same length which he had written that day. Henry Ward Beecher wrote a very brief note, recom- mending to Heenan to use & Sharp’s ritte. Skunk Hutchinson wrote that he would serve one side and cheat both for twenty shillings apiece. - Lieutenant General Scott sent bis compliments to Hee- pan, recommending bim a hasty plate of soup before be- gipning, and a stout heart through the fybt. ‘Wm. H. Seward sent a letter in bie own hand, warmly |. urging Heenan to stick to the Hyer iaw,and Sayers would fare ae Yenkee Sullivan did. A letier from Charles A. Dana, Eeq., was recieved. lt was written in German. Heenan handed jt to the Dutch Minister, who translated {:,and informed Heenan that i wae a request for a sketch of bis life for the new Oy clopedia. THE CAPTURE AND RELEASE OF “BENICIA BOY.” (From the Manchester Exammer, April 9 } Doring the whole of Friday evening Heenea held a “levee” in Mr. Buiton’s (head constable’s) office, and bad the honor of introduction to some of the leading gentle- men of Derby. There was also a large mob outside, wbo gratitied their curiosity by looking at ihe gas lights. On Saturday morniog Heenan was brought up before Dr. Heygate. He was represented by Mr. 8. Leech, froma the office of Mr. Gamble. There were also reveral of his friends present, who had arrived that morning by mail tram from London. The members of tho ‘‘fourth estate” were also in great force. . Mr. Whiston, magistrate’s clerk, addressing Heenan, exid—You, Jobn Heenan, are brought here on the information of Jobn Shaw, who says, from information tbat he has received, namely—that a prize fight ‘s likely to take place in the county of Derbys between Thomas Sayers and John Heepan, and that a is likely to cecur in the said county, he requires that the aii John Heevan, who !s now residing at Long Eaton, in the said county, may be required to find sureties for good be- wer for the preservation of the public peace for six months. Mr. Leech, addressing Dr. Heygate, caid be appeared on the part of Heenan, baving been requested to do 89 by several gentlemen of the town. He (Heenan) request- ed him to state that he bad never broken the Foy in this country, and Had no inten! of 80 doing. is true he might bave made use me harsn language, Dut it was done in the excite! of his capture, when his passions would patarally be aroused. But when they considered that he bad been “hunted,” as it were, owt of eight counties, and his opponent, Sayers, was allowed to go on with the im- punity, Le did teel sore at the treaument he was receiv- wg. It at any time he made use ef expressions that he cught not to bave dove he was sorry for it. Two re- spectable gentlemen of the town were present to give bail for his good bebavior, and it would be for the gistrates to fix the amount. The amount was always ded by the station in life of the parties called upon to find it, and be begged to inform the bench that in Ame- rica Heenav carriei on the trade of a blacksmith. He hoped the bench would not assess the bail at a large amount Mr. Whiston (magistrate’s clerk) gaid the bench had srreed to take Heenan’s own recognizance of £50 and twe sureties of £26 each, (Loud applause followed this an- nouncement ) He would aleo add that the authorities bad no teeling in the matter beyond the preservation of the public peace. The Leicestershire Inspector of Police said he wished Heenan to understand that if he or Sayers came into bis county and broke the peace, they would be taken. Mr. Fox, chief constable—It extende to every — in Fog- land. “Mr. Leech—But they cannot now interfere with Mr. Heenan in any county unless he breaks the peace. His sureties were then signed, and Heenan left the court with his friends. A great crowd assembied outside the hall, and remained there for several hours. Heenan was quietly taken the back way, through Mr. Hilton’s house, and acab being in readiness, be drove off with his friends, intending to leave for London by the next train. Great praice is due to Mr. Hilton, head constable, for his kind treatment of the celebrated pugilist, and also for meeting the wishes of & Jarge pumber of the inhabitants who were anxious to have an interview with this would-be champion of the world. At an early hour on Saturday morning, an Ameri- can artist was buty taking a sketch of the Town Hall, Mr. Hilton's house, the lock-up, Heenan and Mr. Hilton, &c. [From the Bell’s BO In our first edition we stated that Heenan had been arrested at Trent Lock, near Derby, and conveyed to the lock-up in that town. After that eaition had gone to press we learned that Mr. Faiklaund had sot been with Heeaan fora fortnight It is clear, therefore, that he could not have advised the Benicia Boy to take his sudden journey into Derbysbire; and it is equally clear to us that “The Boy”’ himself cannot be censui for the selection of his quarters, a8 he must have been mainly dependent upon his attendants in this matter, and, moreover, cannot have any intimate knowledge of the country, Jack Macdonald has since calied upon us; he says he left Derby on Friday night, and travelled al! night to set himself right with us and the public. He dectares he eelected Treat Lock ag being on the borders of turre counties—Nottingham Darby THE and Leicester—and withiu easy accese of any of them. Colonel Fremont wrote Heenan to give Sayers Jessie. He and ‘s friend had taken sueh precautions as [Here our despatch was abruptly broken off, the cable they thonght would render everything perfectly | failing to work.) safe, and had employed a fellow to sound the polica, and ascertain what was the feeling, and whether anything bad been done or was intended to be done. This felow, whoee expenses were paid, and who had re- ceived all sorts of presents, declared positively that all was right ; apd itnow turng out that he had played into the hande of the police, and it was through him alone that the officers obtained information as to Heenan’s whereabouts. Trent lock, it seems, is the place where Dick Hall and other Notfingham men, including Bendigo, Path¥ Watt should have been selected. We are giad, for the sake of all parties, that this matter is cleared up, and we are pleased at being able to express our opinion that neither of the men, nor their friends, has had hand in the busine The warrant was originally issued in Leicester shire. Bibition of anxiety for Sayers’ success. This is it. It omer in the form of a communication to the Sporting Life~ ‘Em—The glove trial, in which it ie said Ike Baker bad the felicity of drabbing the Benicia Boy, cannot, in my epixion, warrant the conclusion at which many of the Sriends of Sayers have arrived—that they may now freely aad safely lay any odde on him. A few there are since the trial who have bet flye to one that Tom will defeat the Boy in less than ten rounds. They bave predicted the eafety of their investment upon the account which you gave of the bout with the‘ buifs’ in the barn. How- ever much I may be anxious that our valiant champion may strip the laurels trom Heenan’s brow and set them Diaziug on his own, I do not feel justified in making the iris) referred to a criterion of his certain suvcces im as contest with the “ bunch of tives’? It may or it may not be true that Ike was the best man in the barn battle. Hoeenan’s friends claim the yio- Sory over this third-rate English boxer. But as you have Yeeponsible authority tor your publication of that littie event, I feel inclined to believe that Ike did come off ‘firet best.” Let no one, however, be driven from his proprie'y by that occurrence, no matter in what way il resulted. There may be & metnod in this private affair mot comprehended in the philosophy of a goodly number. I am rery suspicious of all such agreeable accomm). ationg, and view many matters that are transpiring with reference to the mill with, perhaps, a super- abundant caution, Absit invidia For the life of me I cannot comprehend Mr. J. Morrissey’s peculiar affec- ton for tbe Englieh cham: ‘8 succese—his fligety Bnxiety to put Tom up to Heenan’s mode of fighting— weach bm ea “thing or twa’ that must lead to the Gefeat of nis brother Yankee. J would not for the world regtrict the members of the fancy in their hospitality o the 160 strangers from Yankeedom who have re- Sently found their way hither to enjoy the great sight. Bat Y would mort respectfully intimate to some of them, who ecem to be affected with the diarrhea of tattling, that their overweening desire to haye Sayers conquer their gallant bg bese oftensive, and looks 80 much dike treason to their national obligations as to excite our Surprise apd disgust. Mr. M., however, may care but Ettle about the national character of the contest, and, Tike many of our own istic heroes, may have ‘some pertonal feeling to gratify. Yet, asa looker on in Lon- don, I cannot but regard the course pursued by some of our Yankee “ cousing and brothers,’ as well as by some of our mative ‘‘ pugs,”’ as open to criticism and cangure. I trust that Sayers will have az litt!e to do with the gen tlemen from the “t'other side of Jordan,” as bon sistent with hospitality, and by no means be influenced by their advice. Above all things, they should have no foreigner to act in any way for them in the ring. If these Americans be allowed any active part im the preliminaries, or be engaged in any responsible wapacity during the fight, (so far as Sayers’ fluty and in- dorest are concerned.) should he win, it wil? be at'ribu- ted, no doubt, to their timely interference; should he ove, to their chicane. If Mr. Heenan can find Englishmen to do the emall work he may require, let him @ bo account be impertiaently interfered with, especiai- dy if he feels himself independent and safe in their pa- Sriotic Keeping. But for the sake of comer pas ational ‘feeling, hope Sayers’ friends will politely eechew all foreign help. | This I write without intend! 3 the Teast ‘ot to Mr. Morrissey and his immediate friends, who should be thanked for their good intentions; but, at the ramo time, they should be made to understand that their sesistance, under the circumstances, would be alike de- trang bog them and to oureelvee. It is very cheering to Sayers pursues the even tenor of his Apiat se pugna. ‘ough it is a liberal sentiment, ‘May beet man win,” I cannot heip Adding to it, by way of xplicitness, and may ‘the best man be Tom Sayers.”’. After all the expressions of assurance on the part of the eporting papers and the stakeholder, 1 think it by no means improbable thaé the police will succeed in prevent- ing the fight on the day when the combatants first meet, and In preventing it at allin public.
