The specie does not show nearly as large an increase as was expected, in consequence of the Boston and Philadelphia exchanges having turned against the city. It seems probable that the specie line will not rize much higher for the present; if the banks do not intend to get themselves and their customers into trouble, they will consider their present discount line the maximum for the season—if they do net, the old story of exces- sive importations and severe bank contractions must be expected this fall. ‘There isan active demand for money in Wall street, arising from the increased speculation in stocks, and the heavy purchases that are being made of various kinds of securities. The amount of money loaned on New York Central, alone, is probably not much Jess than three-quarters of a million a day. Among the note brokers accounts ‘vary—some report an increased inquiry for money, while others complain of a scarcity of paper. No change has taken place in the rates, which are, as before, 5 for short and6 for long paper, strictly first quality. The demand for money, which almost invariably occurs simultaneously with the opening of navigstion, is leading some capitalists to hold aloof from the market, in the hope of making more profit on their money in the course of a week or two. The foreign exchange market opens qniet at aturday’s rates, to wit, 108; for the best bauke: sterling bills, and 5. 16} for the same quality of bitls on Paris. At these rates the demand is slow. The supply of mercantile bills at 1084 a } for sterling and 5.17} 8 .18} for francs is not large; but the wants ef the importers seem to be moderate. A good @ea) of complaint is made by importers of the un- necessary delay which occurs between their sales to the jobbers and the receipt of the paper of the latter in payment. This year, it seems, the jobbers are slower than ever in making their settlements and giving their notes. The exchanges both at Boston and Philadelphia- have turned against the city, and we revise our table accordingly, the following being the latest quo- tations of right exchange on New York at the cities mentioned, the quotations being in all cases for 82,107 ‘Alo 83,422,081 odd & 36 promicm. ES, rl ‘There was a marked reaction on the Stock Ex- change to-day, produced chiefly by the realization of profits by the successful operators for the rise, and by a renewal of demonstrations on the bear side. Néw York Central, which sold on Saturday at 794, fell to-day, between the boards, to 774, and closed 77f bid. The chief purchasers were the par, ties who have been such liberal buyers for the past few days; the sellers comprised a few bear opera- tors and the bulk of the jobbers who have lately been identified with the rise, and whose profits, at the prices of the morn- ing, must have been hardsome. The down- ward movement was assisted by a telegram from Albany, stating that the Attorney General of q ai, 143.015; Pacifie Mail, 1043 a 105; New York Cen- tral Railroad, 77j a j; Erie,11ja4; Hudson River, 394 a 40; Harlem, 10303; do. preferred, 35} a 3; Reading, 42 a 3; Michigan Central, 44} a 3; Michi- gan Southern and Northern Indiana, 93 a 10; do. guaranteed, 20 8 4; Panama, 134 a 3; Illinois Central, 62} a 3; Galena and Chicago, 61} a §; Cleveland and Toledo, 233 9 24; Chicago and R. What the pre- sent Atto } or any other country lawyer of his standing, may think about the aet, which has been eight years quietly in force, and whose constitutionality bas been affirmed by half a dozen Attorney Generals and other law officers during that period, is not of much consequence to anybody; still the rumor had its effect, and the market felt it. The Western stocks were also lower. Galena closed at 61}, against 62} on Satur- day; Rock Island at 63}, ex dividend, against 66; on Saturday, and the other Western shares at a cor- responding decline. The Michigan Southern shares were offered and sold at a decline of 1 a1 percent. We understand that preparations are going on ac- tively for the contest on the 25th, There is, of course, no foundation for the story which is repeated in half adozen city papers, to the effect that the new or re- form party have already secured a majerity of votes for their ticket. They have not done so, and are not likely to do so until they show a little more of their hand than they have done hitherto. Gen- tlemen holding large interests, for themselves or for others, in the Michigan Southern property, are not likely to give their proxies until they see some- thing more of the complexion of the new board than is now vouchsafed to the public. If the new party are prepared with a strong ticket, composed of strong names, calculated to inspire public confi- dence, they may carry the election; butif they fancy that the stockholders can be made to vote blindly for their ticket, simply because one highly respecta- ble citizens is on it, they are probably destined to dieappointment. Several of the present directors, cluding the President and Vice President, should stained in the board if possible: their expe- ‘would be of value, and their interest entitles a ehare in the management.
