Leanne RRREREnanemeeenenenneens EE Dow, and are ready, even at the present mo- iment, to sustain him for the Presidency. Thus the Garrisonians are the advanced , guard—the Zonaves and Turcos of the republl- | can party—the Sewardites are the main body, and the Western free soilers bring up the rear. But the tendency of the three divisions is to ‘the same point—the dissolution of the Union. ‘The ignoring of the existence of the compact in the constitution which protects slavery is @ violation of the basis on which the Union Tests, and just as destrictive of the political ‘fabric as the more direct action of the van- guard, whilst the rear guard, by backing and @ustaining the main body, become identified -with its policy, and as effectually carry out its sviews ae if it were in the front of the battle, —_—_—__. Tur Mexican News ry Wau. Srreet—The news from Mexico caused a prodigious excite- ment yesterday in commercial and political circles down town. It was the common topic of conversation on ‘Change and in the bar- rooms, and nothing was to be heard but specu- dations as to the influence which it would exer- cise on political and business affairs generally. ‘The events which have taken place in the Gulf, taken in connection with the movements on the Rio Grande, seemed to have somewhat changed ‘the complexion of the Presidential contest in many people’s eyes, and to baye brought more prominently forward the claims of Sem Houston, of Texas. It is remarka- bie what a revolution is frequently effect- ed in the most deliberately considered calculations by an unexpected and startling ‘incident, ‘such as has just occurred at Vera Cruz, Personal inclinations and preferences ah give way before the excitement and enthu- siasm of the moment. Thus, in the discussions Which the Mexicsn news elicited yesterday, and in the bearing which it was felt to have on the Prospects of the Presidential campaign, there Was but one vame in this connection in every one’s mouth. No mention was to be heard of Dovg!ss, Huster, Davis, Breckinridge, Wise or Orr, ‘Their pretensions seemed to be ignored as completely as if they had never entered the diets, For tbe moment, in the fresh probabili- ties which the recent news had imparted to the @emocritic nomination, the claims of Sam Ftoustot scemed to engross atterttion to the ex- clusion of thore of all the other candidates, The impressidh thas observable gives to the events now tranepiring in Mexico a double im- portance, ‘They will not only decide the “future character of our relations with that country, but they may exercise some in- finence over the campsign of 1860, In the ehufflings and boliiogs of the political trickatera. at the Charleston Convention, they away be made the means of defeating organized Weachbery, and of imparting cohesion and union to the democratic ranks, Let intendiag rene- gades, therefore, keep a close eye upon the ‘occurrences of the next few weeks in Mexico. They may save them from the temptation of _ Miegracing themselves, and of insuring the dis- scomfiture of their party. Lavevy,Tuses Auona THe Conngcricut Port ‘TiciAxs,—The political campaign which is now going on in Connecticut is being fought out in the real old fashioned nip and tuck style. The election is of the first importance to both of the great parties. On the one hand, the North- ern democrats are exceedingly anxious to carry at least one New England State, so that they may stand fairly at Charlesten. On the other side, the republicans are very well aware that they bave no States to throw awsy, and that ebould their Eastern Malakoff be taken, or even 7’ ‘ore of its ontposts battered down, they cannot depend upon either of the Central States. The republicans have serious doubts as to their Connecticut adherents, and spare no pains nor expense to bring out their fall vote, The democrats are working upen the manufacturing interest, which has begun to see the folly of the doctrines inculcated by Helper and Seward. ‘The democrats know very well that the breeches pocket is the tenderest-part of the wooden nut- meg State, and they are working upon that theme with a will. Some of the strongest men on both sides are stumping the State. Fernan- do Wood leads the nation democratic hosts, while Tom Corwin and Governor Banks follow ibe Mayor on the other side. Last night there was a great democratic meeting at Norwalk, at which Mr. Wood delivered an effeetive-speech, which we print in full to dsy. Both sides have brought out their best men, and the democrats are very confident as to the result. It will be a rather close shave; but it is to be hoped that the State will vote against treason and disunion, and set the seal of disapprobation upon the nefarious doctrines of the black republican party. The election turns purely an@ simply upon this question, and bas a degree of national importance which can hardly be overrated. Without doubt the full vote of the State will be cast. Se ‘Wreck of the Steamship Commerce—All Hands Saved. - PurtaberPau, March 20, 1860. The bark A, A.
