The Custom House returns of the trade of the port for the mouth of February were closed to-day, apd present the following results as compared with previous years:— Impurta. 11868. Feb ,1869. From all that we can learn, the import entries during the current month of March will likewise be very heavy. The ugeregate exports of February were in excess of those of the came month of 1858 and 1859, and this notwithstanding the very small export of specie. Cotton, provisions and breadstaffs rendered good service to the country: the export of domestic produce was one of the largest on record. This wilkdccount, in part, for the light expert of specie, though that is likewise partly due to the heavy specie exporta of last year, which lessened our debt to kurope. This time last year the European war was ex- pected to break out at any moment, and commer- cial circles were much agitated, The demand for provisions and munitions of war was active, but cotton was lower, and European spinners had begun to throw their stocks upon our market. Congress had just adjourned, after passing the bill authoriz- ing the reissue of Treasury notes, but without providing for the Post Office debt. Money on call was worth 4a 44 per cent, and exchange on Eu- Tope 1094 2110, most of the leading drawers finding a market for their bills at 1093 a J. The financial embarrasements of Austria, Piedmont and Ruasia had led to grave uneasiness lest the governments of those Powers should undertake to buy specie here at a premium, and 8o create a disturbance in our money market. Stocks were, with one or two exceptions, about, ten per cent higher than they are at present, and holders of railway property looked forward to the summer quite hopefully; thongh nearly all the Western railways were show- ing s heavy falling off in receipts aa sabe is with the year previous. The following tables will show the jet le of trade at this port for the eight months which have elapsed of the current fiscal year, a3 compared with the corresponding periods of the two previous fiscal years:— Imports 1858-9. 1857-8. 19,877,054 21,766,673 18,848,571 19,856 339 Total for $ mos.$126,936,464 129,311,557 167,157,175 4,771,962 4,938,065 4,660,272 150,710 3 621.902 4,996,012 6,528,303. 4,762,779 Nove mber 5,245 5¥9 3.48) December 2,583,388 8,700,083 Japuary. 4,203,306 3,032,152 February . 38, de 2ichia 8,283,592 Total for 8 mos. .$26, $25,270,771 32,806,287 42,492,478 2,801, 10,961,019 Banton “ovtou 788 8,239,501 8,267,651 8028405 5 344 169 471,970 43383 /223 1,890'003 _2583,995 2,506 638 2,371,427 Total for 8 mos.$50,464,628 18,310,687 Rec. fm Califirma. We have bought more foreign goods and shipped to forcign coun- tries. more produce and more goid than ever be- fore in the like period. Tne gold shipments are beginning to decline, and so, perhapa, ia some de- gree, are the imports of foreign merchandise, To- ward the close of the month, however, it will be safe to look for a revival of specie shipments on an active scale, and fur a falling off in the shipments of domestic produce. The bank statement of to-day compares as fol- lows with the statement of the previous week:— Week Bna'g Loans Oncule yy Depa Feb. 26. . $124,395, 282 8 March 3.. 125,012,700 80'876,172 Increase. $614,468 MOAN “2.A08,95 | This statement will undoubtedly give general | satisfaction. The increase of specie is larger than was expected, aad aa the Sub-Treasury will dis- buree largely this week, the return of next Monday will probably show a farther increase. The best | point in the above retarn is, however, the small in- | crease of loans. Bad the banks increased their discounts a million or more, a8 many expected, the gain of specie would have been prodactive of very Kittle increased confidence. If the banks will only adhere to a prudent and cautious policy, keep their loans down, and not force money down to 4 4 per cent per annum, the coantry will soon find it- self richer, more prosperous and sounder than ever before. The money market continnes to be ubundantly supplied, and parties who choose to run the risk of waiting till the afternoon to effect loans can gene- rally, if their securities are satisfactory, borrow at Sah}percent. The asking rate at the bankers’ and lenders’ is 6 per cent. Seme very short paper has been sold at 6, including a brokerage; but 6 is the general quotation for the best short paper, aud 6} a7 for four a six months rates, with occasional _exceptiona in the case of very desirable names, The depletion of the Sub-Treasury proceeds very slowly; the drafts advieed to-day did not amount to | dey © quotations, whife the gales were moderate, being NEW YORK HERALD, 1 TUESDAY, MARCH 6, 1860. a large sum, and many holders are slow in pre.“ ing them for payment. The foreign exchange market opens without much animation, and drawers are compelled to lower their rates a fraction. We quote the best bankers’ bills 108] a 109, with a good supply of mercantile and endorsed Southern bills at 108} a 4; france, 5.15 @ 16}. The slack demand for bills among the importers leads to much discussion among bankers, and many surmises are put forth to explain the unpalatable fact. The trath ia that we owe leas thap usual, and that cotton is aupply- ing the market with an unusual amount of exchange. ‘The stock market was buoyant to-day, and prices improved all round. Nothing checks a cheerful upward movement but the schemes of the politt- cians at Albany. Central opened at 71} this morn- ing, advanced to 71}, and closed that bid, against 714 bid at the close on Saturday. The Western shares were all stronger. Galena sold at 58}, against 673 on Saturday; Rock Islend at 63, againat 634; Dlinois Central 59, against 68; Michi- gan Southern at 18, against 17}. Rumor states that this company has made a contract with the Grand Trunk for the conveyance of its freight from Chicago to Detroit. Michigan Central is not doing as well as the Southern; the friends of the concern buy a few shares from day to day, in order to sustain the price, for the sake of the negotiation of the new bonds. Canton tumbled from 21 to 19, the supply of stock being in excees of the demand. State stocks continue to be wanted at full prices.
