Who John Cottle, Captain Mallett, arrived here yoater- day, tho captain being found on board in irens, having Deen placed there by the second mate for having shot Mr, Perry, the OratoMcer. It seems that there was some @isegroement between tbe captain and Mr. Perry as to whether the ship was to the north or south of the port ef Acapvico, the captain maintetaing the first and Mr. Berry the second, Some argry words passed, when Mr. Berry jeeringly told the captain he had wether go below ‘m4 take laudanum and go to sleep, and he would take fhe ship ip. The captain then went below, Mr. Perry flow ng him, when more angry words passed. Mr. Perry then went on deck, having @ pistol stickiag out o! his pocket. It is supposed that next week Post Office drafts will come to hand for large sums, This time last year the banks’ held $26,400,000 in coin, and the Sub-Treasury $7,200,000—total $33,600,000, against $31,000,000 now. Money is unebanged in value since last week, though more of it is offering in the street and at the discount houses. We expected to have an- nounced a decline in notes to-day; but the slow dis ‘burrements from the Sab-Treasury have thus far pre” vented borrowers making any better terms than they coulda week ago. Jt is quite unlikely that rates can be maintained another week, unless some unforeseen: accident should impart stiffaess to the market. But at present we quote, as before, short first class paper, with two names, 6 per cent; loana on call, 6, with occasional exvep- aions at 5 a 5}; first class 4 a6 months paper, 7 per cent; single names, cheice,7.a8; names less known, and second grade paper, 8 a 10 a 12, &, There is a searcity of very good paper in the mar- ket, and the banks and experienced lenders have been somewhat embarrassed to fill out their lines, An effort was made early last week to put up the rate of foreign exchange, and many leading bankers felt satisfied that the advance wonld be permanent, This time last year bankers’ bills were worth 1092; and as a general rule, except when the importa- tions have been very light, the month of March be- gips with a strong market for foreign bills, This year promises, thus far, to be an exception to the role. The advance--which was seemingly esta- blished for the Boston steamer of Wednecday—from 109 to 109j,and from 5.16} to 5.15 for francs, has hardly been maintained, and the week closes on a dull market. The importers, it seems, are in no hurry to make their remittances, and the heavy ba- siness that is doing in cotton supplies all or nearly allthe exchange thatis wanted. ‘The recent ad- vance in the value of money in England has ena- bled bankers here to get § per cent more for their sight exchange than for 60 day bills; but even at this rate, it does not pay to draw against gold. We presume that the month of March will not end, however, without a marked advance in bills. The following table will show the course of the stock market daring the past month:— Miseouri 6'...... 70% % 80% 8% BOX New YorkCentral. 7334 WON 2 ee vi Reading. » 88% B53g BON 40 4035 Erie... $35 ee, a A Michigan Central. 36% = 37 ag 87k; Southern guarva. 147 wy 16 Wy 18% Dipole Central... bid 6 B63; BH «BO Galena... 5 OR OTK BIBT Rock Island 62 OB B22 Toledo... 2° 19% 16% 19 Pavama. 130g 18234. 183% 188 Hudson River. % 4. ye OR 40 Peoific Mail. 16% = pg «BO 38g The week has been very uneventful on the Stock Exchange. Pacific Mail was duli for a day or two at the closing price of last week; since then a demand has sprung upfor it, which has caused the price to advance 2a 3 per cent. Many parties who are interested in the property predicta resemption of the enormous dividends which once rendered this stock scarce at 10 a 12 percent preminm, Central has been up to 724, and down to 70}. These fiuctuations, like those in Galena, Rock Island, and the other railroad shares, have been produced by the speculative operations of stock jobbers within and about the board. The volume of outside business continues ‘small, though it has been in creasing within a day or two; the volume of trans- actions among the jobbers is very large, especially in the stocks above mentioned. - Railway traffic during the third week in February was not as active as during the two previons weeks, the weather having been very bad. The Michigan Southern, however, shows an increase of $2,650 over the corresponding week of last year; ‘the Michigan Central shows a small increase; the Rock Island an increase of $321; the Minois Ceatral an increase of $16,917. Whatis wanted to bring all these roads up to their old figures is an advance in breadstufs and a more active movement in agricul- taral produce genexally. The quantity of stuff re- insining in first hands in the West fsstill very large; on the ‘ine of the Galena two-fifths of the wheat and flour are still in the country, and will come forward to Chicago during the months of March, April and May. , The consumption of State stocks and good bonds continues large. At the South, especially, there is a steady demand for reliable securities of this char- acter; Lonisianas, Tennessees and other good State stocks are wanted. The West,ns was to be expect- ed, is not yet in a condition to buy stocks, CITY COMMERCIAL REPORT. Satcrpay, Feb 25—6 P. M.
