Beas in the mil fixing gome machinery tu the third story, sad Isaw a big crack im the wail; thik was a year aflor ‘the wil) begav to rup, John Harris wid me it Gad deen 80 ever since Ue mill was built; tbe crack ran up the whole end ef the bwicing: after thie Une | worked in the repair abop; while | was thusemployed the third story settied fe that Lbey were obliged to level up the main gearing Several times; they dit this oo Sundays; the spinning the worst; I jon't know how mach up, but Kcow it was some, for [ averted in tbe job, they altered ihe hangers nou) they gor Mee vhafung “© run; afer this I was called mto the earé room, and Relped level up the ty frames; toy were levelied up iu various ways, and some of them Sere found half an inch out of level, the setting of the above for might settle the sbafting below, and all this @emrravgement might have been owing to the settling of fhe fwors, they murt, however, have seied more ban an tech to do all this; had the floors all settied ake the ma- ames would not bave beep so uneven; the floor bad pet Wed mere in foine piaces than in others; after thie the grafting was levelled up three or four times, bat how meseh | do uot know; the main jine of the shafung runs ebout oue third of the way from one side of the buiding, and very Lear the first live of pillars, but the Imes are not fm the fame relative positions in all the rooms; I have werked for years past in both mills and repair shops, but ealy im the Washington and Pemberton milis in this &o, prea: you ever think the mill unsafe? 4.— Yes, sir, when the mitil was io motion; if it was a windy ¢ay und you put your forefinger to the crack, you wouls feel the wind come ip; when I was playing on the fire Lheard Mr, Kiowes Say that he was surprised to see fist end of the builting stad as it dit, as ne had always wupposed to be the weakest part of the mill; I alao bears bun say to the gentieman he was talking to that he hed never eupposed that wail to be a suitable one, and I Knew that he bad at one time to plaster it up; I never felt aay fear as to ihe safety of the mill, exoepl when up at the end near the crack; I bave allowed my daughter to work in the mill, but bave always voderstood that she ghevld not work near that cod, and she did not work en J wag levelling up the machinery I never 'y overseers speak about the builuing” being on- gate; the leveliing is done in ail mill, but not so much as @ere; lasked Kendrick B. It war, bowever, thought that it might have been somewhat, fBeenced from the fact that he once had been in the Pemberton miil, and had been discharged, as he alleged, without caute. Benj. Harding sworn—Am a carpenter, and have been eae for tweuty five-years; bave been employed in the Pemberton mills, my business was, in the first place, pre- ring beams to put ipio the mul; there were two pieces each seetion bolted together with three buits; the pieces of imber wore soven by rixteen before they were planed; ‘Mey bad a three-quarter piece between, maxing the beam ixicen inches for tbe first three or four floors; the uext ‘Were an woh ematier, | thiuk, each way; worked on the Pemberton mill until t was complete, in’ the third story fhor the first haif of the beams next to the canal were tal length, the olber half were a hitile short, four inctios nd; the centre pieces were alike thronga the epty-seven Deamé in a story, and T think that were short; should think the short ones ail Fected from two to three inches in the main wall; some of » rested four inches; there were pilaswrn, ghily, coming as far as the third floor, and ere Giecoutibued, the timbers were not cat short; ¥ Were bot oracred long enough; I cut them myselt; whwk that the projections were bullt from the pilasters (ites referred Wo the plan); Lknow where these short tambers were put, there were projections thrown out from the wail, 1am sure it wae on the southern bal’ that wher- ever ibe projections were the short timbers were plaved; think the voriherly half did not bave these projections, Deounse the beams were not long enough; on the next floor fhe Deume were full length, aus rested eght inches on the wali; the mason work was carried up one half at a ume, and hen the timbers were laid; I asked Mr. Kiowes what I rhould co about cutting out the timber; be ged, “cut them as long as you can, aad I will tell Captain Bige iow; the resuit wae i ctiops were built: the jowts were well made wit ven eighth inch bolts, never Roew a mill to be eupported like this ta the shoring; should think the best m (hod was not used in the snoring of wis mill always; that the colunns of the lower stories Were about big ebough for the third story, and Is4iiso at the time; thought the caps were not large enough, and aot more than half thick enough; think the pmtles were Jarge enough, and thatt ere not secures, tor if tbe Ganges should by any cause break, as one did once, the pintie conld come up into the hollow columa, tae core beng larger than the piutle; Tusked if they were secure when we were putting them up, and was wld that was fe orders; 1 said bo more, it being none of my basiness; fhe Duilding in all its parts, for ite size, was rather the colurans were deficient, but there was ae TOWS sections: the machinery was very hoay surface, a monstrous weight to be held up by ts Delow; never knew of any other mill with so loag sec. fons, the man who superintended the bullding said they should never be over twenty-two Or twenty-four fest; @ey werg twenty-seven; the beams were siall for Ge length Of the section; should think the carding room dene: wed by Mr. Winn, the oversser, was very heavily Beaded; should have thonght that the machinery should Shave been moved if it was hely up for fear of difficulty; % has been my opinion taat the floors were loaded wery heavy; where might not have been a mach greater weight to the square foot than in smaller mills, but we cannot put double the woight on double the Yeugih; sbould think that chaaging the Dearing by mov- ne machinery there would be daoger of @mere; think that it would have been better to bay, ‘thé pintice and the pillars turned ao4 mitred together; @m’t think that deficiencies in the piliars coald have been ‘keown except by examination, unless it appeared on the wateide; bad no reason for apprehension because of the short timbers; Ithink tbat if one of these pillars had ‘Proken £0 as to Lave come down, it would have brought all above it to the lower floor, taking at least two beams; afer the first pillar had broken, the otoers would brea nsier; I bave examined the ruins, but have seen n9 evi- dence of the einking of the foundation; think that there was A giving Way cf acolumn where the machinery was moved, I maxe up this optoion from remarks which [ Deardt maie whea the mit was examined, avd from talk I Dac wih 4 person in the mill: I never repaired any foor by reason of ce ; should pot think that boring any Boks c the fioor to put ina bar to get a bearing t move fhe machinery would have weakened the miil, ‘Tos Juror—I think the weight of the fly frames bas Deen stated bere too iow; I should think they would weigh ever thirty hundred poun'ts apiece, but this is a more es- ‘Benate (row « close calculation; the crack iu the corner of ‘Be wall much weakened the mill, as the crack was in tbe erner, avd the corner is the strongest part of a buflding; Mie wil! hat but very little vidration—iess thea otaer malle— bot this is not a proof of safety or cost of atrangth; {Be mili bai a flat roof and was vory wide, so there was Be chance to vibrate; a peaked roof, however, wonld have Deen no improvement, as the walls Wore Ho wide apart to Rave such a roof put on. The very important testimony given by Mr. Harding will be read with great interest, owing to the compotancy eed character of the witness, He is regarded as a most fanhful and excellent mechanic, and his character as a mao rtande very high in Lawrence ‘The inquest bas adjourned until nine o'clock Wednesday morniog Lawrence, Jan. 17, 1860. ‘There ie nothing new in regard to the late Massacre. It must be remembered that, at the corresponding season of last year and the year before, we were shipping specie freely to Evrope, which is not the case at present. Our im- ports being im excess of those of the two past years, and our specie exports comparatively no- thing, we are piling up a heavier balance than usual against the port, notwithstanding the large export | bbls, of domestic produce. The money market is easier, and there is a bet- ter feeling in financial circles. Thongh events do notconfirm the repeated predictions of an orgapi- zation “to-morrow,” the release of a million from the Sab-Treasury has been @ great relief to the banks. The last $45,000 were withdrawn from the Sub-Treasurer this morning, aml in conse- quence several ef the banks were this morning enabled to secommodate dealers who were in meed. Jn the street the supply of money at seven is con- siderably in excess of the demand, and loans are effected at 6 a 6 on good collateral. At the dis- count houses the rate is still seven for the choicest short paper; but the range of paper which is ne- gotiable at that figure is expanding. We hear of some very prime six months paper going at seven today; also of a sale of paper at eight, which would not have passed readily below twelve e week ago. As usual, the increased ease in money has im- parted more activity and a better tone to the foreign exchange market. The business done for to-morrow's market bas been quite large. Bills have ranged for sterling from 109 to 1073, the lat- ter being the lowest rate for sound mercantile bills, the former the highest for city bankers. Most of the business done was at 108 for mercantile names, and 108j for bankers, Sight bills on London are offered by the bankers at 109 a 1093. Franca ure quoted at 5.17} for the very best bankers’ bills, to 5.21 for good Southern or mercantile signatares. The low rate to which foreign exchange fell last week, and the facilities afforded by the tora in the money market, appear to have brought in anum- ber of dry goods importers as purchasers of ex- change. If they begin to remit freely we shall s00n witness an advance in the market. The following are the latest quotations of sight bills on New. York at theecities mentioned, the rates being in all cases for the currency of the cities at which the bills are drawn:— There was only moderate business done to,day in stocks; prices, however, were pretty well main- tained, The general feeling among parties who buy stocks either for investwent or speculation appears to be a disinclivation to operate largely, ia the midst of the present political anxteties. They wonld like to see Congress organized, and the bn«i- ness of the country proceeding steadi)y, before moving with any viger. There was a disposition to sell State stocks, based, in the case of Mixsyuris, op the calling of an extra seston of the Legisia- ture to setile the pending railway qaestions, The Closing qovtation was 79 bid, against 792 bid at the elose yesterday. In bonds there was very little done, The Western railway shares were fairly active at an advance. Galena nold at 62}, closing 622 bid, against 61f bid at the close ; yesterday; Rock Island seld as high as 634, on time, closing at 62] hid, against 624 bid at the olose Yesterday, iitinois Central bangs at about 57}. The Michigan shares advaneed } a j per cent, with afair sbare of business, Central epened ut 741, sold at J, and closed that bid against 74{ at the close yesterday.
