3 UNION MEETING AT MORRISTOWN, N, J. De- Beward’s “Irrepressible Conflict” neounced—Disunton Rebuked. A grand demonstration in behalf of the Union was made Dy the citizens of Morristown and vicinity, without distinction of party, on Tuesday evening last, Hon, Lxwis Coxpicr, who formerly represented that portion of New Jersey in Oo-gress for several successive terms, pow more than eighty years of age, was called ‘pon to preside. Upon taking the chair, he eaid that though he had been admonished by the infirmities of ago to withdraw himself from all scenes of public exciement, yet upon an occasion like the present he responded with yramtude to tbe call, In view of the late scene of violence ina eister State, which had convulsed that State to its eentre and communicated an electric shock which vibrawed through the whole Union, they were called upon to-night to congratulate Virginia upon her deliverance, to express their attachment to the Union, and to defend ii at all ba- zares, (Applause.) Slavery, in the abstract, found in the early history of the country few or no advocates; on the contrary, 18 introduction was resisted by our ances- tors. (Applause.) Virginia was foremost in that opposi tion, and the inquiry caine from every quarter, how can this pation rid itseli of tbat greatevil? (Applause) The abolitionfets, who had defeaied the proposed gradual emancipation scheme of some of the Southera States, found occasion, on the repeat of the Missouri Compromise, to denounce the watire South in most offensive terms, and the foray of Brown was one of the truits of that agitation. (Applause.) While it would be a guilty silence not to denouuce the disunionists of the North, eoula we withhold our censure from those woo, in the padlic councils of the country, avowed their dewralua- tion to dissolve the Union if @ presiding officer chosen oy tte House of Representatives should bea man woom they disapproved. (Applause) Tnese declarations had “an awful squintiog;” they squinted wwerds treason. They were treason in the bud, and if they hed made Abeir appearance in Jackson’s tine, could any one doubt what would have been the fate of the culprits. (Laughter and applau. Prayer wee ered by Rev. ATTEMPY OF TUE BUFFALO AUTHORITIES TO ARREST THE BENICIA BOY—HIS BSGAPE OUT OF THE CITY— CAPTURE OF TOM O'DONSBLL—LBITER PHOM HAR- RY BROOME, BX-CHAMPION OF ENGLAND, TO THE BENICLA BOY—VISIT OF TOM SAYERS TO AMERICA — MATCH BETWEEN HARRY GRIBEEN AND ED. WILSON POR ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS, BTC. On Mouday last Mossrs, Tyler and Scroggins, two of the Deputy Sheriffs of the city of Buffaio, arrived in New York tor the purpose of arresting and conveying to that city for trial, by toe Court of Sessions now being held there, Messrs. Morrissey, Heenan, Kelly and Tom 0’Don. nell, for being present and aiding avd assisting the late prize fight between Price, of Boston, and Kelly, of this city. It will be remembered that those parties were ar- rested here by Deputy Sheriff Tyler, some five or six weeks ago, and all gave bon Js in $500 each for their ap- pearance at the Seasions now being held in Buffalo. Mr. Morriseey, indeed, accompanied the above namod oificer to Buffalo, gave security for his appearance when called upon to answer the charge, and engaged 4s his counsel Eli Cooke, Fsq , one of the able advocates in that city. Since that ume Morrissey bas been laid up by severe Sickness, and upable to leave bis room, and im this state he was found by the two officers when they waited upon hum on Monday last. A certiticate of bis attendant phy sican as to his wabihty to travel was tendered them, and bonds were given for his appearance when capa- ble of bearing the fatigues of the journey. Learning tha: the Benicia Boy was absent from the city, giviog sparring exhibitions in Baitimore, and nut expected W rewurn unul the fouowing day, they turued their attenuen to Kelly, who had been ove of oe principals in the Ught in ques von. But bere they were “at fault,” ag that worthy, au ‘ucipating the visit of bis Buffsio friends, aud not relishing the prospective pieasure, had sold out his business about @ week previous and was mon ext inventus, In fact, after “realizing”? all the cash he possibly could get bold of, he haa saiied for New Orieans three days beture their arrival in New York, Finding the xselves disappointed in one of their victims, they next atrected their evergies to secure the referee on that occasion—Mr, Tom O'Donnell. Procesding dowo Broadway, they encountered the object of their search quietly perambulatipg the ‘shilling side,”’ and lite dream- wg of the proximity of the law officers of Buffalo. His reveries were suddenly and unpleasautly interrupted by an invitauen to accompany Messrs Tyler & Co. to the Astor House, where they were transiently stopping. Apo- logics and refusals were alike useless, and O'Donnell was obliged to accompany his pressing friends. It must be stated, in justice to (Donnell, that he waa selected by both Price and Kelly to act as the re- feree in their fignt, on account of his wel] known tmpar- Ua ity, and that he had not the slightest pecuniary interest inthe contest. Mr. Morrissey immediately wrote w bis counsel at Buffalo to defend O'Donnell, ‘at his (Morris s¢¥'8) expense, and also requested two of his friends in that city to give bail, if required, for auy amount, on bis responsibility, It is anueipated that the Bosvon party, Who are suifered by the Bullalo magnates to remain 1a peace, will come forward and defray their quota of the expense attendant op the defence of heir own referee. ‘Tbe Benieva Boy returned to New York on Tueaday, and was immediately informed by his friends of the above facts. He immediately proceeded to the house of a friend to remain perdu for wtew days; but as it was thought upadvirable to hugard anytning, ta view of bis uate pated match with the Enghsh champion, he was convey- ed, late on the evering of Tuesday, to the adjoming State of Jersey, from wWheuce be cannot be removed without a requisiuion to the Goveruor of the State. By the siuw tais could be issued, the Benicia Boy will in all probability be en bis voyage to Europe, to prepare fur bis great interna. tional struggle for the supremacy of the prize ring. The Benicia Boy has just recetved the following letter from Harry Broome, ex chawplon of Eoglaad, ia relation to the coming tight. Wepvuspay, Doc. 23, 1859. The award of the Treasury notes yesterday creates 2 G00d deal of talk in the atreet to-day. Mr. Cobb may bo Said to have only got par for his six per cents, while the State of New York sold their six per centa the other day at a premium ranging from 10 to 4 per cent. With regard to Northern State stocks a distinction We cannot conceive apy event that would prevent the due payment of smterest on the State bonds of New York, Massachusetts and Ohio, or that would seriously and for a long period of time depreciate the market value of those securities, Comparatively speaking, disunion would hardly affect them. With regard to other, and especially Westera stocks, the case 1s very different. Therets a blot on the financial eacutcheon of Michigan, Itinois and Indiana which should prevent a prudent guardian from investing bis ward’s mony i the stocks of those States. And we are bound to say that the financiering of other Western States, such as Wisconsin, Minnesota, Jowa and Missouri, has been so reckless and Kentuckys and Marylands. must be Grawn. often £0 corrupt that no well informed pereon would surprised if they repudiated any day. Quite a large pro- portion of the cities and counties of the Wes: have repu- diated, and almost boast of it; among these are auch cities az Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and others of scarcely Jese nove. Where the towns agree to cheat their creditors, what can you expect of the States? Pennsylvania, in Ike maaner, though from good financial mauagement ber credit stands well abroad, should not be trusted by @ prudent guardian; he recent conduct of the city of Pittsburg shows that the old leaven is in the Pennsylvanians still. With regard to federa! securities, it is not likely that their value can ever be permanently injured by political events. Disanion aud civil war would, of course, depreciate their market value; but even then it is likely that the intereat would be fairly and regularly paid. If the South permanently separated from the North, the existing federal debt would be divided between them, just as tho Lombardo-Venetian debt of Austria has been divided between that empire and Pied- mont. In five, we would snggest to our correspondent to look at least as closely at the character and antecedents of the people Yo whom he praposoa to lend his ward's money as No community where re. to the prospects of disunion, pudiation has been sanctioned by a popular voto, where dishonesty is applauded and called smart- ness, hould be trusted with money.
