FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Suwpay, Dos. 25, 1950. ‘Mec week ending yesterday, as usnal at this ecazon, ‘wimeesed less activity thap usual ia business cireles, Chengh at the South the movement mm eeHon eoutinucs te ‘We unprecedented, and here at New York the import en- tries are likewise unparalloled fer the season. ‘Wp to the close of the last cotton week the amount ef bales received at the ports sineo Soptomber was 1,760,000, against 1,493,000 to the same date of 1868, and $32,000 to ‘Ge samo date of 1857; of this the expert has been 902,000 ‘bales thie year, against 729,000 tosame date Jast yoar, and 228,000 to same date year before. number of per- gous who refuso to believe that the crop will exceed 4,000,000 bales ws steadily diminishing, and 4,250,000 i «am almost oniversally received eatimae. fe hardly necessary to add that me one can entimate with any accuracy to within 250,000 bales of the veaks; the crop may tarn out to be 4,000,000 or 4, 600,- 600. In Mnglana tho excess ever previous years bas anced a decline of J¢ a 34 Of a penny from the bighest prises ruling; iu the South an unusually large demand from France and the continent ef Europe. sustains tho market, This demand is partly speculative; but it is quite Mkely that the consumption of cotton is increasing ia Brance. Breadetufis continue generally inanimate. Speculators here are evidently disappointed at the sluggishness and declining tendency of tho foreign markets; accordingly ‘we note ® decline of 10c. a 160. in flour from the highes vates of the month. From Chicago a similar state o ‘tings is reported, though there have been lately heavy purchases of breadituffs and provisions in hat market. Letters from Liverpool report that ‘four ie being imported from France, and that the epera- ton leaves a profit to the importer, This hardly tallies ‘with the reports current a short while since of the short @rep in France. However, the best authorities have all along held that there could be no matertal advance in the _ Briees.of wheat and flour in Eogland ull about or after New Year; eur operators must wait a few weeks before they despair. ‘In foreign preduce the business of the past week has ‘been moderate. Sugars are again slightly higher, and firm at the advance. Teas are dull; holders do not seem t understand why they do not advanoe. Coffee is gene- rally dull, with the exception of Rio, which is frm. Hides are higher, and the demand frem the trade is good. Lea- ther has also advanced, Thero is hardly anything doing fm weol, and the price is unchanged, ‘There is nothing doing in dry goods, but the importa- fens are unusually heavy, Some of the large importing Ihouses centinue to assert that the orders sent te the Oon- ‘iment fer goods have been more moderate than usual; fihus far the facts do not bear them out, and, for our part, wo look for uo decline in the imports. It has be- @eme 20 much the custom of the trade for each importer te azeert loudly that he has reduced his orders, and then privately to increase them, tn the hope that his neighbor ‘will really curtail his, that we look for no cure for the present mania for over importation, but a long series of ‘Waprefitable yoars, which will end by weeding out of the wade all the weak and many of the strong houses. Dry goods importing bas been so long a profitable business, ‘and it is 80 easy to import, especially with banks ever peeking to expand, that the wonder is that the thing was not everdone long ago. ‘The following are the Custom House tables ef the trade of the port for the week and since Jan. 1, a3 com- pared with tho figures for the same period of the last two 1858. 1859. 381,632 2,490,408, 1,940,377 21445400 otal for the woek | $1,783,645 4,634,808 Before reported... 21 1,i40,607 1s2'eis Bor 230,855,686 Bince Jan. 1 $212,024,42 144,070,876 Exroats bgt oF SProre. 1859, For the week...... $1,083,346 1,140,713 eae Previously reported.. .68,066,292 87,487,228 63,562,913 Since Jan.1...... Some * ghipments have been made South, however, and thus the movement of specio has been against the bank average, ‘as the following comparison between the bank statement made up yesterday (in lieu of Mouday) and that of last week will show:— Wikend’g__Loams. The bank reserve of specie received an accession of strength yesterday, in the shape of $1,408,234, arrived per Baltic from California. We presume that most of this will go South in the course of tue ensuing week, While the fall in Kuropean bis pro- vents shipments of specie against them, the fall iu North- ern bills at New Orlorns causes @ flow of gold southward, ‘and it js evident that the banks cannot accumulate much. Yesterday was the last day for making the usual depo- sit ef one per cent against bids for the three million of Jreasury notes which aro to be awarded at Washington on Tuesday next. Tho amount of ceposits at this pointy up to four P. M. yesterday, has not transpired, the Sub-Treasurer, contrary to custom, refusing to furnish the amount to tho pross. Some of the Didders will probably deposit at Washington, Tho amount of the bids would have been larger had any other ay of next week beon eelected for the awards. As it was, bidders here were expected to make their bids three days pefere their competitors at Washington; they wero thus Placed at 60 great a disadvantage ‘vhat it was singular there wore any bidders at all under such circumstances. It geems to be generally understood that six per cent will be the rate of tue aew notes to be awarded; no one seems willing to give par for 534’s or 634’s, and the Secretary is net allowed by Jaw to issue motes boaring over 6 per cent. ‘The moncy is required by the govermment to pay last year’s postal appropriations, for which Congress will pass ‘a bill as goon as it organizes; no disturbance will thus be caused in the money market by the withdrawal of coin from the banks, as it will flow back to thom again direct- ly. The amount of duties continues fair; ihe Sub-Trea- sury held yesterday $6,132,218, against $6,015,562 at the tloge of last week. Money has not varied in price since last week, though ‘there is rathor more inquiry than there was, probably in Gensequence of the holidays, and the derangements in financial movements caused by the loss of a day in each of the two holiday weeks. Wo quote call loans 687; very fow loans are made, however, at the latter fgare, which is ovly given when the security is not generally Available, Most of the brokers are omply supplied at 6 per cent, The supply. of morcantilé paper has been ‘ample since last week, and cspitalista find no diffteulty in obtaining firet clase double name paper, 48 6 months, a’ ‘7 per cent, Short accoptances, vory prime, go at 6& 0; ‘after the holidays, the rango of paper negotiable at these rates will probably be enlarged, Names leas known aro enrrept, a8 usual, at § ® 10a 16 per cent, according to @landing, &. Thor have been no important failures pince last week. Thore wad ® rumor that the Kerosene ‘Oil Company, whose directors failed a short while since, bad failed to meet its paper, but thia is contradicted by the officers of the company. The concorn has, we be- Neve, a good deal of property, and @ profitable businoss, ‘The supply of Southern bills of exchange has been very Jorge, especially on Paris, and an active business was done for the Persia at rates not varying material. ty from those current last week, to wit: 1095 a 34 for Dankers’ sterling, and 6.1610 6.173¢ for france, Very good Southern bank bills were done at 5.18%¢ for franca; some excoliont sterling bills wont at 100% a3. There ‘waa no steamer for Earope from this port yesterday, and foreign exchange has henoe been inactive since the Persia galled, Somo bills on Paris were sold for tho steamer from Portland; nothing was done for the Boston stcamory on ‘Wednesday next, At the presont rates of exchange spo- ee cannot be profitably shipped to Europe to gover bills. In the West exchange is steady at points which place sight drafts on New York about at par for gold. The purchases of eern and pro ‘Visions, as well as flour, bave been very large at Chicago, Bt. Louis, Milwaukee, &co.; and the preapect is that « lively business will bo done in these staplos throughout the winter. ‘The following bas been the corse of the stock market during the present month:— Now.’ gan paion iin 17. tr a, 84: ae 837% pA York Centra She $0 18: i oe ay a at aX uy 5 tral. 41% 40 30% BO, B03 Southern guart’d. 193 173% Hes 41% 17 Miineis Central... 6835 663% 00% bY, id 1" ax 08% 66, 0% ux & 03% 63 2 10% 19 ata 14 1844 186 128 ox. div. 40% 41 42% 41. Pacite Mal: % TA 16% 16% 76. The week closes on @ rather beter market than we had from Monday to Thursday. . Early in the week some of the strectiand board jobbers, availing themselves of the prevailing dulucgs, assailed some of the moro promi. nent fancy stocks with vigor and success. ‘The conduct of the New York Central directors, in anticipating their usual dividend day, by declaring a dividend of one per cent leas than was expected, exercised a prejudicial effect on that stock, which, having remained steady at 80 while all the other stocks on the list had declined 6 to 10 per cent, was the more likely to yield to any vigorous pressure. Accordingly, the bear offerings caused Central to decline to 76%, and several Western stocks in proportion. On Fri- day there was a rally, and yesterday—partly in conso- quence of the demand for three days’ deliveries coming on a single day—a further advance took piace. So far asthe future of the market is concerned, tho argument of tho bears appears chiefly to be that, during the agitation of the slavery question, stocks cannot ad- ‘yance, as the public will not care to risk money in fluctu- ating securities. The bulls, on the other hand, point to the ateady-increase of traffic on the railways, and argue that the improvement in their business, and the resump- tion of dividends, must tend to foster speculation and investment in railway property. The experience of the past has generally been that after the holidays there was ‘an increaso of business on the Stock Exchange. People are generally not disinclined to put money into stocks at that season; and just then there is a good ideal of money afloat in the bands of individuals, arising from divi- dends paid, intorest, &e, ‘The following is a statement of the earnings of the Ohio and Mississippi Ra!lroad for the month of November, 1858 and 1859:— (MERCIAL REPORT, Sarurpay, Dec. 24, Asues.. The greater part of the supplies received are sold to the tanners in tho interior, who return their equivalent in Gressed leather and skins, and which arc distributed over the United States, with some shipments to Ragland; the chief gales, however, are made directly to the manu- nek ed of boots and shoes. This, by the aid of com merce, the plaina of the tropics supply the hides from which, after the ie tae of tanning, the feet of those in habiting the high latitudes, amidst its frosts and snows, aro shod.
