Trial Trip of the New Steamship Monti-~ cello, The new acrew steamship Monticello, with a large par- ty of invited guests on board, proceeded down the bay yesterday morning on a trial trip to test the efficiency of the ‘‘docalorator,” a recent invention of engincers Cune- 600 aud Lighthall, for cooling, or rather condensing steam, ‘Bo that it may be again used in the boiler—the great de- ideratum of steam navigation—all attempts at which have herctofore practically failed. The company on board was principally composed of ur most eminent engineers, whose united testimony was that the “decalorator”’ is a complete success. Messrs. Cromwell & Co. are the first to adopt this important invention, and, we are told, will place it on all their steamers. ‘The Monticello is one of our fastest ocean steamers, making fully twelve knots in ordinary, and up to four- teen knots in favorable weather. She was built by the veteran Jabez Williams, at Greenpoint, under the super- Antendence of Jobn Baird, for the New York and Virginia Screw Steamship Company, as a companion vessel to the ‘Mount Vernon, and will with her form a semi-weekly Tine to Washington and Alexandria. For strength of bull, Deauty of model, completeness of finish, and those ali” ties that go to make up a first class steamer, the Monti- cello is certainly one of the finest specimens of the taste and skill of our New York mechanics. ‘The Monticello was launched on the 20th of September Yast, 1s 160 fect in length, 28 feet beam, 26 feet depth of hold, and measures about 700 tons. She has a direct act- ing er engine, with a 62 inck cylinder and 42-inch rty returned to the city in the evening, highly ate pe th the steamer, as well as with their entertain ment on board.
