lceeClose of the Opera “Tue Opera seasou will bo closed with the matings to- day. ‘Tbe final evening performance wus gion last night, ‘when the “Huguenota’? was sung for the eecont timo. ‘The artiste go bence t Philadelphia, opening at te Academy there on Monday, with Guzzaniga and Briguoli ip the ‘Polluto ” In January the Opera will be given in ‘Boston; eo that New Yorkers will be without their fayo- rite amusement until February, ‘The performance of lastnight attracted a good house, aad was sbout the same as that of Wednesday. The bonors of the “Hyiguenots"’ belong chiefly w the tovor ‘Btigelli, who gang the music admirably throughout, aud ~was especially good in the lust act. ‘Thie Opera season, which commonced on the 17th of ~Motober, bas beeu a very interesting and eventful one. ‘The public was disappointed in nearly all the artists from ‘whom anything was expected, aud agreeably surprised “by others of whom wothing was known and nothing hoped, ‘The season commenced on the 17th October, and cloaes ‘On tho 3d December. There have boon given in all, inolud- ning matinges, about thirty-Qve performances. Two operas ‘wow (o this public have been porformod, The first, tho * Sicilian Vespers,’ was splendidly gotten up, and was @upgeight times. It was the gen ral opinion that the Opera would have been more successful had tte charac- tore been differently distributed. At tho best, howovor, the ‘nusic did not eujoy aay such popularity as was accorded ‘apapimously to the “ Trovatore” aud the ‘ Traviata.” ‘Much praise is due to Signor Muzlo, who conducted the “Performance of the “ Vespers.” His orchvstra was the + Dest ever beard bere. The second novelty, ‘‘ The Magic “Flute,” was sung three umes, aud was generally voted “ too old fashioned.” The other operas produced during the season were the “ Rigoletto,’’ “Maria di Roban,’”’ Exnavi,” “ Lucrezia Borgia,” the “ Polioto,”” “Martha,” “Lucia di Lammermoor,” “La Traviata,” “La Son- pambula,”’ the “Huguenots” and the ‘ Trovatore.”” ‘Madame Anna Bishop sung tor the drat time at the Acade- “my on the 26th of November, aud made a great sensation, ‘Mr. and Mra. Draytou have also gasisted at a mati+ée. BE The first part of the season was very gloomy. The Greatest expectations had been formed from the pre- Himinary annouvcements. Tho once rival managors, Strakosch and Ullman, had anited their forces. Toe stockholders of the Academy had guaranteed a large sum for the advances required by the new urtiste to be on- gaged in Europe. Mr. Strakosch went to Europe, made a tying trip, found nearly all the theatres shut, and brought back two prime donne—Speranzs and Creacimano—bowbd of whom failed. Although Culson, who is very guod vin light operas, was if the company, and Mme. Gazzuniga wes evgagel directly after the break- down of the other singers, the Opera did not recover from the severe biow which it bad experienced. Tne public was afflicted with a distressing disease kuown ug ‘want of confidence, and although the compauy wasa good ope, well organised and properly directed, yet ‘there was wanting that sensation which is noedud to Grouse the public—that movster waich is always ‘craving novelty, and which never gets onough of it, What was to donc? Albertini! and Beau- carde, two artists of European repute, wero tried, and they mude only a moderate success, It was evident that a good part of the money invested tu Euro- pean artists bad been thrown away. In this terribie state of affaira,a little prima douna, Patti, one who had ‘been “raised” ia tho United States, came upon the svoue. ‘She -was a timid litte thing, sixwen years old oaly, but ebe thought she could sing the music of ‘Lucia’ Well, after a good deal of talk, she was engaged at very low terms. Sho could not have @ regular night, however; ‘sbo must take her chances on one of the terrible off pights, when, as a rule, nothing wilidraw. But Patu is an exception'to all rules except those of the solfeggi. Sho sang iret at o public rebeursa] on the 26th of last month, and surprised tbe critical audience which assembled, they not expecting anything half so good. She was tosing the next night, and by that time she was famous. At was Thanksgiving night, according to the Governor's ‘¢proclamation, aud no one gave thaaks more heartily than the managers of the Opera. The next day tae town rang ‘with the praises of little Patti, aad everybody marvellod at the curious circumstance that, after sending to Europe for artista who all failod, a great ‘tde prima donna ehould turn up directly under the noses of the managers. Sho sang again on Saturday for tho gnatinge (tho best of tho scuson), and thon on Tuesday another off night), repeating “Lucia” and winotug now chonors. On Thursday last Patti assumed a now réle—one in which she qould come directly in comparison with singers like Lind, Bosio and Sontag. Sho succecded against all this, and in all the exquisite morceau -of the opera she was pronounced superb. Tho .gudience, which filled the houge from top to bottom, was most intensely interested, and whilo she was singing there ‘reigned throughout the theatre that profound silence which is the bighost tribute paid to an artist. When the ‘epplause.came it was like a hurricane, No artist ever achieved so remarkablo a triumph under such remarkable circumstances. ‘Mise Patti is a great acquisition to the art world. She has rare vocal gifts, and wnderstands perfectly well how to use them. She is very young, very naive and very at- tractive. The critics bave been unanimous in her praise, and sbe is already the pet of the public. She has saved the Opera soason, ani it is to her that the managors owo the success which has been won out of the fire of defeat. As ® graceful acknowledgment of this fact, there will bo to-day an ‘Adelina Putti Matinée,” at which all the pretticat wemen in New York will assist, lige Patti will sing in “The Sonnambula.”” Tue future career of this prima donna will be watched with the greatest interest, After a toar through this country she will go to Europe, where sho will undoubted, ly receive the honors accorded to Malibran, Aloady, ‘we understand, thore is a movement on foot amoug some persons in this city connected with musical and theatrical matters, to make a purse and engage her for five years, paying ber fiity thousand dollars a yoar clear of ail ox- penses, 60 that when she 1s twenty-one she will havea cool quarter of a million in her pocket for ber marriage portion. Meantime Patti is enjoying all the honorsof her triumph. “She reecives no end of bouquets, wreaths and baskets of rare exotics, Ali the sons of song about town are invok- ing the muses in her praiso. They say she wears her Jaurels as modestly as she has won them bravely. There have been some other successes pendant to Patt'’s triumph. Among thom, that of Ferri, the bari- ‘tone, merits special mention. He isa fine singor and an admirable actor. Mme. Gazzaniga bas sung several of hor ‘Dest réles, and remains as ever a primo favorite with the public. Beaucarde and Albortini have cancelled ther ‘contracts with the management. They woro liked; but in tho “Trovatore’’ and the ‘‘Poliuto”’ they did not achieve 80 much success with tho public as Gazzaniza and Brignoli, ‘who are singing as usual, and that is exceedingly well. Such is the history of a short but very interesting Opera peason. It affords a good lesson to the managers, and has not been without profit to the public, who now begin to geo that we need not look to Europe for our singers, any more than for our painters, or our soulptors, or our mas- ‘ters of the mechunic arts. The pre- vailing excitement in referonce to the John Brown affair operates to deter people from purchasing stocks, and but for the fact that there has been no great quantity of ‘State stocks pressing on the market, prices would proba- bly have declined. As it is prices aro steady, but tranenctiong are Imited. Now York Central was tho most active of the railroad stocks; it advanced % por cent. People continue to dabble in the Eric securities, bet the price is hardty sustained. Tho Western shares wore in fair demand. Galena did not vary in prico. Rock Island advanced 3¢ per cont from yosterday’s closing rates. Tho Michigan shares were steady. Ilinoia Central advanced 3; per cent, with avery small busi- nese; at the present prices the shares in this company, which coat the owners $60, are now selling for $16. Tho traffic, as is known, is largely on tho increase; November will probably show an increase of $70,000 as compared with November, 1868; but this increago, it is said, is due tothe heavy freight business which the road is doing from Cairo, and it seems doubtful whether there is any profit on it, Panama took astart upward again, closing atan advance of 2% per cont. This is the fruit of the rapture of negotiations between Vandorbit and the Pacific Mail. Pacific Mail was steady; in the morn- ing it sold down to 75, but rallied in tho afternoon, and closed at 76% bid, against 7634 at the closo yesterday. Wseoms to be understood on all sides that there is no present prospect of a resumption of negotiations with the Commodore. At the mocting of the Pacific Mail Company, held yes- terday, the powers of the commitwee appointed to negoti- ate with Vanderbilt were withdrawn, and a resolution Was pursed declaring that no further negotiations should be undertaken except by order of the board. This reso lution will commend ttself to the approval of the swek- Loiders. I tbe Pacific Mail Company had bad fewer com- mandors iu chief it would have done better. In the course of a report of the proceedings, the Commercial Advertiser states: — Mr. Aspinwall, who was associated with the President of the Company as a special committee w carry on a ne gotiation tor the sale of the property, reported that the committees bad revived a the of the steamers, &c., from Mr. Vanaerbut, substantia/ly. my the terms as already ¥ published in this paver. That ub. sequently Mr Vanderbilt had receded from his offers, on the eatire negotiation bad been ended by hia rofusal to Carrs. ont the supaianiees arranged bey between ‘him and the Oor cotemporary must be mistaken. It is impossible that Mr. Aapio wall can have reported that ‘the entire ne- gotiation bad been ended by bis (Vanderbilt's) refussl to carry out the stipulations arranged between bim and the committee; for Mr. Aspinwall knows perfost- ly well that tho nogotiation was really ended by his (Aspmnwall’s) refusal to give guarantees with- out which Messrs. Mosea Taylor and Horace Clark declarod that the Commodore could not safely cou- ‘summato the bargain. There is a great deal of strong and Juat aisguet felt at toe manner in which the public have been relieved of their goney in this matter; it will not 10 to ehift the responsibility for what haa happened to the wrong shoulders. Mr. Vanderbilt was not the man who broke off tae negotiation, nor was he the shrowd operator who bought tbe stock at 75 and gold {t at 90; before the controversy ends we may perbaps know somothing more aboat both these travsactions.
