The toquest was held at the Twenty first ward station house, ia the pre- seDce of a large Dumber of spectators, who seemed to take a deep intereet in the progreas of the provesdiugs. ‘The evidence olicited was unusually interesting, especially that of Capt. Jayne, who bad a long conversation with deceased relative to the manner in which he was shut. ‘The pri oner, Toomas Downing, brought « witness named Riley, to prove an alibi, and succeeded W a certain extent ‘a showing that be could not have been the person who committed the murdor. Still, the jary wore of the opinion that Downing was implicated, and a verdict to that offsot ‘was rendered accordingly.
