The United Btates steam frigate Lancaster, although thirty days out from Rio, bad not arrived at Valparaiso when the Alert sailed, and it is now feared that she kas Inet with some accident. The Bogota belongs to the line of steamers which py between Panaina and Valparaiso, and was sent not ng since tO England 10 be repaired. The French frigate Andromeda, with the Admiral on board, had arrived at Valparaiso. The cflicers of the United States frigate Merrimac gave A magnificent ball to the citizens of Valparaiso, a few days before the suiiiog of tho Alert, which was attended by all the efficials of the place, the foreign consuls and the Officers of the English and French vessels of war in port. ‘The Merrimac was to have sailed in a few days for the United States, Dr. Edwards, fleet surgeon, who has been seriously ill, has Deen condemned by @ Medical Board, and will rewrn to the United States via this isthmus. Louis to cruise off the mouth of the Colorado, and ourselves to remain off Greytown untid the 10th of November, or until relieved by tho Jamestow! ‘This was all well enough; but, supposing the filibuster expedition had sailed, a8 reported, on the 4th of October, from New Orleans, it would haye reached the Colorado about the 10th or Lith, and with their boats tacy could have got tothe lake in seven days, and thas the St. Louis, arrivibg on the 20th off the mouth of the river, would have “looked the stable alter the horse was stolen.” If it is really the intention of our government to prevent the lupuing of Lilegal expeditions, why not send here two or three of the Cromwell steamers, and station them at the mouth of the Colorado? Salling vessels are not suitabl: for the purpese, for in heavy weather, being obliged to slip and Stand out to eea, adverse winds and ourrents might drive them so far away that a steamer would have ample ime to land Mibusters, aud be off again before a sailing vossel could return.
