The City Inspector, Colonel Delavan, has beon obliged to suspend street cleaving operations since Saturday last, in consequence of the appropriation for that Department having been expended. It will take the sum of $25,000 to carry on the work the balance of this year. When Colone! Delavan entered upon his present position the strects were ina most filthy condition, consequently he had to put on a large force of laborers in order to get them in ® cleanly condition. Ina few days Mr. Delavan intends to publish the account of cach month’s expen: diture since the commencement of the current year, in order to show the public that since ho entered ‘upon the arduous duties of bis office he has used the pub. lic money with economy, and that the principal part of the enormous sum of $300,000, the item for street cleaning this year, was expended by City Inapector Morton, of dirty street notoriety. There remains about $17,000 of thi amount in the hands of tho Comptrolicr, but this is kept as u coutingent for any bills for stroet cleaning that remain unpaid. For tho last six or ight wooks City Inspector Delavan, with the conovrience of the Mayor and Comptroller, had the principal streets cieaned by ma. chinery, and with very good success until the fuitaro of the appropriation for that work was oxhanstod. ‘This modo of cieaning tho strecta has mot with decided opposi- tion by a combination of contractors, who have b. ing for the past six months to’ make a tract”? for this work.
