Prices were higher at the Girst board, but closed heavier again; in the afternoon they were generally firm, and closed steady. The Michigan shares, which have been so long and so seriously do- prested, rallied from one to two per cent this morning. Michigan Central sold at 403¢, closing in the afternoon at 4 bid; guarapteed sold at 16, closing at that bid. Galena and Rock Island were aleo a fraction higher; thay closed ati2X and 62% respectively. Toledo suld as high as 1914 @ recovery of nearly two per cent. Harlem and Hudson River were very firm; the latter was in demand at 36 in the afternoon. Central touched 803{ at the morning ®eard; in the afternoon it sold at 804;, closing at that bw. Erie is steady at 634. Her speculative pecurities were thought a year or two ago to have reached ‘dhe point of greatest disfavor, but the past twelve months have shown tbat such was not the case. New York ‘weners will probably attribute this to any but the true eaure; yet they will scarceiy attempt to demonstrate that capitalste, to whom national prejudice is little &aown when the safe acquisition of an extra one or two per cent interest is in queetion, have ever manifested any ‘want of credulity 60 long as even credulity could hold on. Qavadian investments, owing to the latest experiences of fhe Grand Trunk and Great Western Railway lines, are ‘met moch removed from the ordinary American category. ‘We do not intend to claim for the great undertakings which constitute the railway communications of the United Sates immunity from mistakes incident to all commer- @al enterprises. Railroad companies, steam packet com- panies, banking companies, and all other trading associa- toe, are liable to the uncertainty of success which attends speculative projects of any kind. Most of our railways were built na time of fever and excitement—many of them before the time had come for their profitable opera- Gong. Now, the fever bas subsided; the excitement under which the railways were constructed has Passed away, and we are suffering from the relapse which could not but follow the fever. In our case that reaction has been aggravated by two successive short crops, and a general ‘sommercial paralysis which for two years bas reduced the traffic on our railways far below any estimates that were current three or four years since. But, in all ‘this, in the condition of our railways, in the cause of that condition, and in the inevitable future, there is nothing which shoud have provoked the astonishment or drawn forth the sneers tthe London journalist. Our railroads are simply pass. ag through the crisis through which British railroads passed ten years ago. In the year 1848 the condi- fon of the Britien railway interest and its future Preepects were far more gloomy and scemed far more Boreless than those of the American railway intercet @ the present time. In England, families were beg- gared by the hundreds; irretrievable disaster was spreaa Grovghout the land by the universal collapse in railway securities, The London and Northwestern stock, for in- wtance, fell from £240 to £90; the Great Western from £20 to £50; the Manchester and Leeds from #200 to £30; ether stocks, which had commanded a high value in the market, fell so far below nothing (the stock being subject to acsessment) that holders eagerly transferred them to ‘their footmen and their servant girls. Now all, or nearly all, these stocks are selling at high prices, and regular though moderate dividends are paid on nearly all of them by the holders. The collapse in our railway’ securities ‘thas been far less terrible than the ke catastrephe was in ‘Bogiand. Our leading railway companies have always paid the ioterest.on their bonds, and some of them have ‘tages. The ordeal through which it is Passing has’ com- pe'led a searching economy of management, Tt has shown the folly and danger of accumulating floating debt. ¥t has painfully exhibited the disastrous ‘consequences of fesuing obligations that can only be met at enormous ga- erifices, It has proved the madness of competing schemes, of competing rates, and reaily it has placed the railway system in a far Rounder state than it would have been spoils? A goo? many of them are selling out their Centra! and Galen bonds, Deing con- vinced that this whole country i going to the dogs, By and by more of them will be buying, @ all kinds of absurd prices, eecurities which mo pru- dent man here would ‘teach, Their best friends mest admit, on a calm survey of their American juvest- ments, that fo choosing stocks for purchase they have sel- dom evinced much judgment, They aro not known to bo holders of such railway property as New Jersey Cvutral, Cleveland, Columbus and Cincinnati, Hartford and New Haven, &c., &c.; the stocks which they bave made pe culianly their own are the New York and Erie, and the Tiiipois Central. And while experience warns us against taking them as guides for our investors, it is due to trush to say that the English would be a richer people to-day if they bad invested more money in American securities, We believe that,on the whole, the Englisn holders of American securities have fared better than the Br.tish holders of any other foreign or British stocks; that, in the course of ten years holding, they have received about twice as much money in the shape of interest, aud now have as good a property, a the holders of aay other stocks gold on the London market.
