—— fpecch of Scvater Wilson, of Massacha. setts. BEWARD'S “INREPRESSTBLE CONFLICT” RENOUNCED— THE BLAGK REPUBLICANS TRYING TO SQUIKM OUT OF THE HARPER'S FERRY RESPONSIBILITY. Avconsinersble crowd of republicang and others as. cenfbed at Clinton Hall, Astor placs, at 8 o'clock last evonipg, in consequence of the announcement that Sena- ‘tor Henry Wilson, of Massachusetts, would deliver an @@iress bofore the Young Mens’ Republican’ Committee. ‘Tho attendance was vob. very large, though the lecture room was comfortably filed, there being possibly present between three and four hundred persona, Mr. P, Dircher was unanimously) called to the chair, ‘and immediately proceeded to organize the meeting and pominate officers in due and proper form, Dr. J. E. Snod- ‘grass being appointed Vice President, In opening the proceedings the Chairman said that the persons present had been called together to listen to the words of aman who bad done faithful service to the eause of the republican party, and to whom they always bad and always would listen with pleasure. Every elec- ton that took place was to thom important, and the comiag election was second to none in point of importance. Mr. Jawes A. BRIGGS was next introduced to the audience. The Cbairman said that’ this gentleman— ermerly of Obio, but at present of New York— was well known to the public, Mr. Briggs then proceeded © address bis hearers on the nature and tendency of the, sierepressible conflict.”” The contest, he said, was going ‘en, and there was nothing to check it, The “irrepressi- bie contlict’” had recently shown its head and had caused me httle terror and commotion. They had heard of this sontlict also in Ohio, whem the Little Giant was carried by its rushing tides. They had also heard of it in mang oc, coetition the mage -— State of ississippi—w ities are always i ‘They had atso bad a contestin Minnesota, one of the youngest cavghters of our Union, where squatter sove- reignly wes buried under the large majori there poled. Re then spoke of the scenes at Harper's Ferry, arguing what no fave map would have acted as the poor oid man eovcerned in it bad done. But if any man had been treated as poor Brown was in Kansas—if any man having sous had seen them treated like Brown’s sons—bad auy wan been put in chains, and dragged to prison, and ill ased in every Way like Brown, it would, perhaps, cause him to hate slavery. The man was goaded to despera- feon, and Detieved himself to the Moses who should bring deliverance to pie. And in this belief he struck for freedom, and so Keres he successful that the Armory of the United States ai Harper’s Ferry was seized and occupied by a crazy old man, with eighteen other persons and five negroes—the telegraph wires were cut, and the whole place kept in subjection for two whole days. Even the shy-valorons S alrons) military of Virginia had to be called out to put wn this terrible revolution. He then went on to describe the events so freah in the memory of our readers, com- menting on them as he went on, “He spoke of the howl- iuge of the pro-slavery press, which was erying out like hyenas over their prey. The “irrepressible conilict”’ wall go on, and se long as slavery exist in this world, 80 Yong will liberty be found struggling against it. So long as error existed it must be removed. So long as human ‘Wropg continued to oppress the world, so long would bu- man right fight against it until it conquered it. (Great rene The democratic ms and especially the ew Yorx Hyxatp, had all along been at- Yacking and setting upon Senator Seward. According to the Heap, Mr. Seward was the old cloven foot, horns, ‘tall and all. With head erect and tail outstretched, he ‘was rushing through the land to crush out haman life and human liberty. But the fact was that Senator Seward ‘was now in Fgypt, studying facts which might prove use- fal lessons on his return to his place asa Senator. Mr. Briggs wen on at some length to applaud the antisiavery party for their exertions the cause of emancipation. prophesied that in ten years both Virginia and Mary- Iand will be free States, while he regarded the dissola- tion of the Union as an absurdity. Senator Wison was next presented to the audience, and ‘was received with tremendous applause. He said that be had come there with the understanding that he was to address a few young men of the Republican Club of the ‘ity of New York, and to present to them a few plain agen suggestions. Hopeaeet inthe few remarks | had to make, to speak the utmoet plainness and | frankness of the issues now pending before the country. ‘The gentlemen of New York were about entering upon ‘an election of some little importance. Their friends in other pronounced — their ‘verdict against the policy that guides the present adminis- ‘ration at the national capital—New Jersey, Wisconsin ‘and Massachusetts had epoken, and the voice of the Em- pire State was also about to be heard. (Applause.) It ‘Was important that the great State of New York should pronounce her judgment in language not to be mis- taken in any section of the country. At the present Mime, after other States have spoken, and spoken glo- movsly, an effort was being made—a poor, futile, rable abortive effort—to assail the cause of republican liberty im the State of New York, by charg- ing the responsibility of an insane old man’s act at Har- per’s Ferry upon 275,000 liberty-loving, Union-saving, tic men. The effort was a miserable one, but it had n clutched at by men who have been defeated over and over again by the republican party. (Cheers.) But who are the parties really to be blamed for the rs Ferry disturbancey He had not the Slightest hesitation in charging the whole re- pro-siavery democracy of Se. on the United States. It was the legitimate fruit liey that ruled in this country for the last fow years. pele by Dr. Channing, when speaking of the hor- vors of the French Revolution, that the monarchy and aristocracy of France, that oppressed that people to mad- ness, were responsible for the horrors of the Revolution, and not the insane men who enacted them. This remark was true of the present case, and it has been true in all similar cases in the world. Senator | Wilson then proceeded to consider the state of | parties in the republic. The country, he said, was Givided into two great contending forces. The struggle they are waging may be called the “irrepressible con. fict,”’ or anything that one pleased. But there is acon test in progress. There are great powers on the one hand contending to propagate and extend human slavery | through the territory of america, and on the other were | | | forces striving to suppress and restrict slavery— | to make it what our fathers made it—a me local condition. The slave power had seized upon the democratic party, and bad used it for the extension of slavery on this continent, and that ty, in ebedience to the demands of the slave power, ad used their voices and their influence for the extension ef human slavery. Now, there was a party that rises ‘Sp in opposition to this policy of the democratic party ‘ere was a party that accepted the doctrines of our re- publican fathers—a party that stands where Washington, Jefferson, Henry and others of our predecessors stood— where the great men who laid the foundations of the re. public stood. This great party, now organized unter tho mame of the republican party—— At this point of his address, Mr. Wilson suddenly laid his hand on his head and had to sit down. It was at once seen that he was attacked with an affection of the head, and considerable excitement was witnessed among the audience. Every necessary attention was at once render- ed, and it was eventually stated by the Chairman that it ‘was an attack of vertigo, to which the Senator was sub- toed Mr. Wilson did not, however, resume the plat- ‘m. | Gov. Cuxve.anp, of Connecticut, being introduced while Senator Wilson was recovering, recommended every one Dot to look to any man or class of men as to how they | Should vote, but to consider their duty towards God and Fe they would be sure to vote on the right side. n years ago there was a whig party, which has since been annihilated on the question of slavery. There were | then three men in the Senate opposed to slavery, of which ‘Wm. H. Seward was one. (Applause.) There are now twenty-four Senators opposed to slavery, and in the House there are also a plurality of the friends of North- ern doctrine. The Southern party—tor they are not what ‘they call themselves, a democratic party—want to govern the whole Union and every State in it, for they want to extend slavery all over it, arguing that the inerease of shaves in greater proportion to the inhabitants of the presen‘ fifteen States will in time necessitate the extension ‘of it beyond the limits of these fifteen States. I and every. isan should pray them to dosist from their insane measures. We advise them to devise with their Northern brethren some plan for the full emancipation of ‘the slaves, and not continue to exert themselves*for the reopening of the slave trade. With these slaves, which would be imported in millions, we do not want to have gome other John Brown hereatter breaking up thie entire Union and scattering woe and degolation thronghout its Great length amd breadth. (Great applause.) Ong exports will now probably increase, as we shall presently be shipping both breadstafis and pro- visions pretty freely to Europe. During the preceding week the export of tlour to England was only about 6,900 barrels, besides 5,650 bushels of wheat ; we sent to the ‘West Indies, British North America and China, about 15,000 barrels of flour, The cotton export is smaller than usual, The course of speculation in both breadstufts and cotton is not calculated to encourage prudent merchants to ship ether the one or the other, at present prices, to Europe, in the hope of making a proilt, ‘The money market does not vary much, though on call five per cent is now quite the rule, and ome borrowers say they can get loans at 414i. At the discount houses the range of paper which can be sold at 5% is steadily widening. The private capitalists complain bitterly of the Poor prospect before them for using their money this fall. Foreign exchange is rather stronger; we quote sterling 60 day bills 11044 a 24, most of the leading houses asking the higher figure. The demand for francs also is fairly active at 5.10 for short sight. To-morrow’s steamer will probably take out a million anda half to three-quarters in specie; the amount secured at the ship’s office at four o'clock this afternoon was $1,400,000. On Saturday, again, there is a prospect of a large shipment. ‘The stock market continues to exhibit the same charac- teristics; there is no outside business, and no inside spe- cylation of avy consequence; prices to-day took a lurch downward.
