Suspay, Vet. 2, 1859. ‘The business of the past week with the interior was gen- erally good, though the dry goods men continue to com plain, The Western merchants, so far as we can learn, ‘are displaying very considerable caution in their op>ra- tione—buying one-half what they used to do, ant showing a dispasition to proceed deliberately aud on sound princi- ples in the re-establishment of Western credit. Some of the dry goods auctions have been fil attended, and many of the goods withdrawn. The chief glut appears to be in French and German goods, and especially in fancy de- | scriptions; the lose on these will probably be general and heavy. Hritish goods and staple articles are less abn. dant, and have suffered thus far littl nothing from de future prosperity of the country is such that if the impor tations feli off for a week or a fortnight the tone of the market would improve; but, in fact, the excess of im- portations over 1858 and 1857 becomes larger every week, Under these circumstances the event could not beuifferent, from what we see. It is a great thing for country dealers, whocan at present purchase goods in New York in many instances considerably below cost. ‘The foreign produce market has been generally active at full prices. Teas have advanced about two cewts a pound on the strength of the reopening of the Chinese war, Im. porters expected a more considerable advance, not only in consequence of the war, but also because the stock is unui light; but grocers are buying very sparingly, and seem willing to truetto the future. The advance in the sugar market is maintained; since the Ist ef Septem. ber sugars have risen %c., and the stock here has boen reduced 20,000 hogeheads. Returning prosperity Ibas evi. dently stimulated increased consumption; 80 far as con- sumers are concerned, it would seem that the late export of sngars to Great Britain was inexpedient. Colfve is firm. Hites continue dull; cargoes now expected to arrive will net their owners a considerable loss. The cotton crop continues to come in freely, and the exports are large. The French have been very large buyers in the Southern parts; orders from British spinnere have likewise come over by the late fteamers. The market, however, han boon aud i oti! « dechning one. At this eeason of the year present prices seem high; but the cotton dealers say that, ehould peace ve preserved in Europe, even a crop of 4,009,000 bales will not satisfy the demand. The receipts at the ports last week were 64,000 bales, against 48,000 bales same week last year, and 14,000 bales aime week of 1857, making the { total receipt since Ist September 100,000 bales, against 82,000 bales to kame date of 1858, and 21,000 bales to came date ef 1657. Gur leading bankers are free buyers of cotton bills in the Southern porta. The week closes with a better tone im the breadstuffs market. While, on the ove band, advices from several! of the Southern States and from the principal wheat growing countrice of Europe intimate that the actual yield will pro | babiy fall short of the August estimate, on the other, the farmers of the West are wisely sending forward their grain as fast as it is in condition to be moved, and Chicago is once more « keene Of great business activity. The re- ceipts of wheat af thet point during the month of Septem. ber were in round vombers 2,188,100 bushels, against 1,241,°50 bushels during the month of September last year; the receipts of four this year were 115,060 barrels, againet 62,700 barrels same mouth last year; go that, al- together, turning the flour into wheat, Chicago has re- ceived 2,763,550 bushels this September, against 1,454,559 last—the excess this year being thus equal to 1,208,800 bushels of wheat. It may also be noticed that, whereas, | last fall a considerable portion of the grain forwarded to market was so poor as tw be almost ungaleable, this year the universal report from the West is that it is excellent in quality. The private advices from England per Asia state that the crop, beth in that country and throughout Earops (with the exception of Prussia), is not threshing vatas was expected, u) {the actual yield of wheat wid be very much below an average in Great Britain, France and Russia. Under the circumstances, consilering the re «ported epread of the potato disease, some Britiah houses write as though they looked for a fair export from this | Bide. At present, prices do not permit of grain being ex ported to England at ¢ profit. A smallpurchase was mado owé'riday far English gecount, and itis understood that som thousands of bushels have been bought for England at Baltimore; but a comparison of the quotations shows tLat @j her our priove must fall or the English prices rise betore wheat or flour can be shipped profitably. ‘There are indications of an advance in Great Britain, but, ae usual, ‘t is being amticipeted in the West, and the ob. sect may whus be defeated. ‘ihe foreign trade of the port for the week has again been very large. We alluded im yesterday's paper to the besvy import. of dry goods; the: of general merchaudise, as.will be seea below, ix equally large. The receipts for duties at the Snb-Treasury have been pretty heavy during the week, in consequence of con- 1 tinued large importations. ‘There is as yet no sign of any falling off, The interior exchanges do not vary much. At St. Lous and Cincinnati they are becoming less favorable to the city; at Chicago the rate is still 2 per cent, but the bankers are contracting abead to deliver exchange as tow as 1 per vent at the close of the mouth. At New Orleans New York exchange is falling. The following has been the course of the on the Stock Exchange since ast week :— Oct 1 Migsouri 6" 83% New Yerk Central 813g 4445 5 - 4335 Southern guaranteed...... By | Mlinois Centrat, 68g Galena, 4G Rock Island, 86% iff 35 Pacific Mail... 70% ‘The statement published a week ago of the position of partics on the Stock Exchange explains the variations | which have taken place rince Inst week. Nearly all the | jobbers or speculators within the Stock Exchange are bears; the bulls, who constitute a small minority, baye | for the most part sold-out their interest and are standing | aloof waiting for a fall which shall ensble them to buy in again with a fair prospect of a large rise. There is still very little commission business. The public have been buyers of raiiway stocks, since Angust1,to a much | greater extent than is generally supposed; euill, the buy- ing has not by any meaws been as ln’ge or as general as it used to be before the crisis; nor is it reasonable to ex- pect that it will beso until the bulk of the railroad com- panies have proved practically, ‘by paying honest dividends, their intrinsic worth. Railroad traffic conti- hues to improve in the manner and direction indicated in this column a week ago. All the roads terminating in or near this city are doing considerabiy better than last year. In Obio and Michigan the increase over last year is not general, and the impression appears to be that as a gene- ral rule the aggregate of the September business on those roads will be about what it was last year. In Ilinois the increase in the traffic shown during the first weeks of September bas continued; the Galena, the Rock Island, the Minot Central, and the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy have done a very handsome business throughout the month, Pacific Mail has been pretty active since last Monday, and has fluctuated between 78 and 82. We learn that the new Atlantic and Pacific Steamehip Company will organize to-morrow, and will run Mr. Vanderbilt's boats in oppo- sition to the Pacific Mail and Nerth Adantic companies, as heretofore. We presume that the only reason why the chmpany was organized was to give the line a perma- nency which jt would not have had so long as its existence The United States Mail ‘Bteamship Company expired yesterday, and its boats will be sold within a few days. On Wednesday next, the Paitic, of the North Atlantic Company, and the Northern Laight, of the new Atlantic and Pacific Company, will both sail for Aspinwall, the rates of fare being as low as they ‘have been for the past few months. Considernble curiosity is felt as to which boat wil carry the:maile in the place of Johnson; it seems to be generally ‘understood that the Commodore will obtain it, thougk the proprietors of the Pacitic Mail assert that they have se- cured italready, One thing is certain: it will be carried by ‘Panama, and not ‘by Nicaragua. We published in Saturday's paper the assurance of a friesd of the Pacifle Mail. Company that that concern had never, sinee the op- pesition commenced, lost a dollar by their Doats, but had made money every trip. This is the more surprising, and ympany are ‘entiled to the inore cougratatation, us weare assured on the best authority that Commodore Vanderbilt, who passes generally for ai expert steamboat manager, is losing «money by every trip, though bis way Dill is rather heavier thap that of the Mail Company.
