Attempts have frequently been made of late to elicit from Mr. Buchanan declara- tions of bis views and intentions with respect so the Charleston Couvengion, The President is reported to have @lways replied, substantially, that he himself would, un- der no consideration, accept a renomination, but that he intended to make his influence felt in the nonfination of this successor; and he is said tohave added, ‘My private ‘Opinion is that no person in the country stands #9 food a ‘Chance at presovt of obtaining a majority of the votes at ‘Dharleston as Mr. Robert J. Keducing the merits of the two paintings to an arbitrary standard, Church’s pic. ture is the most trothful, whilst Gignoux’s is the mest artisic, They are both, it will be admitted, the grandest efforts im their way that have as yet been made in con- ection with this sublime epeotacie, and the painter who hopes to surpass them must bring to the effort qualities ‘which bave not as yet been developed in the present gene- ration of artiste, An opportunity of contrasting the merits of these two great worke is afforded to the public through the liberality Of their owners, They will be on exbibition for some Weeks at Messrs. At Weston’s, 766 Broadway, there is now on exhibition « noble sea view by Albert Van Boost, one of the best, if not the very bent, marioe painter that we have in th's country. It ts a picture of the regatta of the New York Yacht Ciub in October, 1858, with the Rebeoos in the foreground lead. ing the fleet. The yacht is lying down to the wind uader full press of eal, and every object on her deck can be distinctly scen, The fidelity with which the lines aac rigging of this beautiful cra‘: are rendered shows that the artist, unitke the m»jority of marine painters, is com scieatious about the individuality of his portraits. There is not one in & thousand of them who ever does more than geverulize when he paints shipping, for the simple reason that puinters generally know little or no. thing about it. When, therefore, we find an artist in this speciality so miputely socarate, it is but fair that he should be awarded credit ror it. The effects, however, which are mostto be admired in this picture, are those of the atmosphere and water. The Spectator can almost fancy the breeze playing around him. and the waves bounding under his feet, as he gazes on the scene. If to produce the impression of reality be a suc- cess in art, Mr. Van Beest can be said to have achieved ‘one in this picture. INTBRNATIONAL ABT ASSOCIATION. ‘We have not had an opportunity of noticing until now the additions that have been made to this fine collection. Amongat the most prominent we notice a marine view— the Port of Ostend in Stormy Weather—by Andreas Ach enbach. This picture is one of the Dusseldorf schooi, and is full of life and action, Nothing cac be finer or more satisfactory to ihe sense than its genera. effect. “ Napoleon at Moscow,” a historical portrait, by J. Grun, of Berlin, the same master who painted the “¢ Hagar and Ismael” which was so much admired at the opening of this exhibition, is a work of still greater merit, considering the difficulty of the subject. It isgrandly but simply painted, like most of this artist’s works, ‘ The Four Seasons,’* Nos. 9, 10, 11 and 12, by F. Blank, of Dus- seldorf, are charming productions. , The landscape by Cari Jungheim (No. 36), is rich in tone and remarkably ‘Vigorous in its treatment, No. 157, ‘ Good Morning,” « picture of a child ooking at himself in a mirror, and No. ‘168, “‘ A Mother Playing with her Two Chilaren,” are two admirable tableaus de genre by E. Geselischaf, the same artist who painted the “ Young Musician,” #0 much ad- mired at the opening of the exhibition. No. 28,“ The Rising Gun,” by Kroger, is a nobie pleture; the clouds and figures are, superbly f romcege 13, by Hans Gude, tz ® capital landscape Berake Alps. No. 21, “ Caught in the aa” by F. (ae ts algo a very effec tive and boldiy painted picture. “ Tae Widow's Mite,” by Pp. midtz, is a noble composition, finely drawn and brilliant in coloring. Altogether, the recent additions to maintain the made to this pier ey of a character promises made by the directors at its opening, Cricket. ST. GEORGE'S VERSUS NEWARK. The junior elevens of these clubs played a match at cricket yesterday at Hoboken, which was one of the moet interesting of the season. The batting on both sides was very fine, and the bowling, fielding, longe stopping and wicket- keeping excellent. In their second innings even better batting was eae, and the score of eighty. one was run up with en ix wickets down—thus winaing the game With four wickets to spare. ‘The bowling of Messrs.
