It was thore mark of one of the most eV quent and gifted orators that our country has ever prf, auced, that in order to obtain immortality we must Co asent to die while we live. Nevertheless, it-can never be amiss to urge moral con- siderations upon youth who are just appearing upoa the borizop, whose stars are culminating—who have, at jeset, a bope to obtain the zenith of fume. Valor is quality which Napoleon Bonaparte himeelf, I think, oace raid, Was, perhaps, the least qualification of the soldier. ‘uo would call himself a soldier that is capable of feeling the emotions of fear when bis cause is just? I traet the matrons of our land have furnished us with no such gong. (Applauge.) We are all brave—that I take for granted. Bot what direction shal) you take in order to establish it? Shall you be heady, and rash, and insubordinate? Shali you even follow the examples of some of the illustrious brsve who have passed away? Will you plunge yourselves into danger from rashaess or from the impuises of mitguidod temper? If you do, you will diminish tho admiration which otherwige your conduct as brave men would gecure. I cannot myself admire the rashuess of Murat, gallant, and in some sense majestic as he was. When be takes bis bridle in his teeth and a pistol in either hand, and rushes beadlong into the mouth of danger, without a hope ef success. (Applause.) I cannot admire him. But I do admire the valor of Napoleon, who, when his lines began to fail, rushed to the head of the column, and inspired bis soldiers with new energy and zeal by pointing to the flg of their country, (Loud applause ) And the gencrouz youth who learn in echool life to dis criminate between reckies*ness and courage will avoid the one and cultivate the otber, and go through life con ttantly ixcreaging thoee qualities which enaoble the msn and illuetrate the history of the country. (Applavse.) It is diftlcult for me at any time, without emotions that are very powerful, to allude to an example which I purpose now > look at; but it bas go turned out in the history of the world tha’ our beloved country has been sigoally blest in presenting to the e¢miration of mankind the most fearless of haroes, the greatest and best of men. The following are a few particulars of a murder com mitted on board of the steamer Matagorda, which arrived at this port this morning. A pacsenger who entered bis name as Wm. W. Lyons, of New York, was murdered, it is supposed, during the night, and his body thrown overboard. At daylight in the morning a large pool of blood was found on the after deck, witb portions of a skull and braing, with tufts of hair hore and thera, showing that Mr. L. was killed with blows in- flicted on the head while on a settee, where it is thought he wag sleeping. There are traces where the body was drawn and ‘brown overboard. The side of the yeesel is espattered with blood. Oa the arrival of the boat at this port an officer was called on board, and a thorough search was made for the murderer, which resulted in the arrest of a person who gave his name as Mr. Hill, The boat was detained by an order itaued from the United States Court, by Judge Watrous, and an examination held (the boat was detained here seven bours), which resulted in the detention of Mr. Hill charged with the murder of Mr. Lyons. Mr. Lyons is represented by the evidence to-day before the Court, to be brother in-law to Mr. Taylor, iirm of Taylor & Todd, Chambers etreet, New York, and of Mr. Thomas, formerly Mayor of Jersey Uity. FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. ‘Tuxspay, June 4—6 P. M. The express only takes $50,000 from here for the Boston steamer to morrow, and though it is likely that the leadiog drawers will sbip more freely by the Ariel and the City of Warhington, which leave this port on Saturday, the dul ness of exchange indicates that the drain bas for the pre sent been checked. The letters by the Fulton are encour- aging in tone; a more steady feeling prevailed in the con- tinental markets at the time she sailed. More gold nad arrived in London from the United States and elsewhere than the mercantile bankiog houses could employ satis- factorily. Our money market is decidedly easier to day; we hcar of fewer discounts above seven per cent, and oo call, moncy is again offered to the brokers at five per ent, The true test of the state of the money mar ket will be the xward of the $5,000,000 now Treasury notes, to be dispozed of next Monday. Tt is hoped ot the Treasury Department that ibe government will realize from three to four millions of collars in epecie from this award, It must be remem. bered, however, ant some ten millions of the overdue five per cents of 1853 may be sent in for redempti Under the ciroungtances, the government will be doing weil if the new issue cn be set afloat without disturbing over $2,500,000 of the old. In fact, it is not desirable that both sets of Treasury notes should bo afloat at the same time, The new ones were created to redeem the old. If advantage be taken of the present ease of the market to place both ktads in simultaneous circalatioa, the government might find itself gravely ombarrassed if any accidest csused an advance in the rates for money. From present appearances the new five millioas wit! be gold at from 5 to 534 per cent. Treasury notes are a Btock Exchange. There were egain this morning a few orders for stocks, but the operatora for the fail attacked the market with such vigor, and offered such large quantities of stocks on timo, that prices again receded. In the absenc> of more general crders to buy stocks, the covtrol of the market remains ia the hands of the jobbers, who for months bave been operating euccessfully against railroad property. At the etart, this morniog, New York Centra’ touched 74, an advacce from yesterday's closing price; it was hammered down before the close of the session to 7354, and closed ia the afternoon at 7324 bid. The Western stocks were equally heavy. There ie ¢ Je tatk just now about a scheme, to which we casually alluded the other day, for leasing ¢ Erie Railroad, It is proposed to organize a company with capital of a million dollars; said company to take the Erie road on condition of paying interest from the date of the lease on ail mortgage debt, and to increase the pay- mente year by year cntil, four ycare hence, they are able to psy interest on all the debt and a trifle on the stock. We presume that the real aim of the authors of thia pro- Ject 1s to free the Erle from thé Moran régime, and to ge’ the property into new hands, It is undeniable that sino Mr. Moran’s pea has been doiog service for the Wailetreet jobbere, the desire to see him in a sphere better suited to his capacity than bis present one has become pretty gene- ral; but. whether the proposed lease is the simplest way of achieving the end sought remains to be ascertained, The following is a comparative statement of the exports (exclusive of specie) from New York to foreign porte, for the week and since January 1 :— 1857. 1858, 1859.
