MYSTERIOUS DEATH OF A YOUNG ACTRESS. The Body Found at Fort Hamilton Identi- fled os that of Fanny Deane Haltsey— Statemen: of her Aushand—He Accuses her of Infidelity and ,Inteigue wi Contractor in Brovklyn—Her Sadden Dis ‘rance from her Mother's House— Phe Search by the PollcemArsest of the flusband and the Contractor—Interesting Btatement of Deceased’s Mutner—Procced dings Lefore the Coroner Yeatexday, &e+ The body of the young woman found floating ia the ‘bay near Fort Hamilton, on Sunday afternoon, proves to go be that of Mrs. Fanny Doane Halsey, the wolt known actrees and Shakeperian reader, who bad boon missing from her mother’s residence, No. 111 West Twelfth stroet, ‘ince the efterncon of the Ist instant. At present the cause of her sudden demise remains involved in doubt. ‘Whether she committed suicide or mot with foul play is get wncettain, Hor mother and sisters aro undor the impression that sbe has been murdered, while her husband and others are inclined to think that she committod self-destruction while laboring under the effects of certain revelations which recently ‘came to light concerning her honor and fidelity as a wife It appears that Mrs. Halsoy had formed an attachment for Mr. Henry S. Wells, contractor of the Brooklyn Water ‘Works, had been in the habit of seeing him frequently, and received moxey from kim at different times in sums vary- ing from $16 to $60, All this was known to Mr. Halsey; bat the was not aware that any improper intercourse was going ‘0p until within a few hours of his wife’s disappearance ‘On Wednesday morning, the 1st inalant, Mr, Halsey says he detected his wife in the act of writing letter of assigas- tion to Bir. Wells, and found in hor posseesion tyro or throe ‘epistles, which she confessed having rezetved from th» ‘Brooklyn geatleman in question. He at once accused her of infidelity, and then followed a scone of domestic trouble painful in the extreme. Mrs. Halsey, ac- ‘cording to the statement of her husband, cosfurse’ ber guilt, and freely gave up all the correspondence that had taken place between her ani Mr. Wells, She ‘then sued for pardon, and, after.considerable pleading, her husband’s heart was softened. He promised to forgive ‘her on cou:ition that she would sign an agreement, the purport cf which was a eolomu promise on her part never more to sew Mr. Wella, or have anything whatever to do with him. This paper she signed; and thus the quarrel ended. Soon after the above scene is alleged to bave transpired, srs. Halsey left the house for the purpose, as abe said, of buying a pair of gaiter boots, since which nothing was seen or heard of her until Sunday afternoon, when her body was found floating in the bay, as already roferved to. Mr. Halsoy profes ss entire ignorance of the smenper in which his wife came to her death, and can oaly* account for her sudden disspprarance and subsequent -death on the ground that remorse of conscience drove her to commit suicide. Now Mia. Deane (the mother of the deceared) takes an -entiroly opposite view of the caso, and firmly belioves | that her caughter was murdered, and that, too, by Mr. Halsey. From the day of her daughter's disappoarance ‘Mrs. Doane was under tho impression that something ~dreadfui had happened, and upon being faformed of the | recovery and ientification of the body yesterday she ex- claimed, “I knew it would be so; Toften said she would be ruined by ber husband, but I did not think he could ‘have murdered her so.” I+ is true, she had communi- -Sated her suspicions to the police previous to the reco- ‘very of the body, but she Lad a strong hope in her own mind that her daughter would turn up alive. Upon stating her case to the Deputy Superintendent, that official detailed detectives Deyoe and Sampson to attend to the matter, with instructions to spare no effort in behalf of ‘the bail frantic mother and grief stricken relatives of the isting woman. ‘The detectives immediately went to work and searched every nook aad corner of the city, but the object of their search. wes nowhere to be found. On inquiry they found that Mra, Halsey bad left her home about half- Past two o’clock on Wednesday afternoon, for the purpose -ef purchasiag «pair of boots at the store corner of Kighth avenue and Fifteenth street. The proprietor of the shoe store, on being questioned in relation to Mrs. H., said she bad not been there that day, so all clue to the where- abouts of the missing woman was lost from the moment she departed from her dwelling. From Mr. Halscy they Jearned ali the particulars relating to the intrigue with ‘Mr. Wells, and saw the correspondonce that had taken place, together with the written premise of Mrs. Halsey © abetain from apy further intercourse with Mr. W., which bas been withheld from the public until the Coro- ner’s inqaeet is concluded. Upon questioning Mr. Halsey, they further learned that Mrs. Halsey had agreed to meet Mr. Weils xt Thompeon’s ealzon on Wednesday afternoon at four o'clock, but the fact of the assignation becoming known to the husband, she promised not to fulfil her en- agement, Mr. Halsey was of the opinion, however, that ghe did meet Mr. Wells, and advised the officers to follow up the clue. ‘On Thureday Br. Halsey went to Albany, a8 ho gays, in quest of bis missing wifo, and not finding any trace of her there, telegraphed the result cf kis mission in the fol- Jowing words: — Dear WitttaM—As yet I have received no oe of ‘Fanny. HALSEY. ‘The despatch was directed to a brother of Mra. Halecy, ‘and was followed the next day by the arrival back of Mr. Halsey bimeeif. Meanwhile Mrs. Deane had not been idle. Thinking, perhaps, that Mr. Wells might know zomething concerning her daughter, she proceeded to Brooklyn and had an interview with him. Mr. Wells seemed astonished at the absence of Mrs. Halacy from her home, and assured Mrs. Deane that he had not the slirht- { est idea where she might be found. of the cha‘ge made against him when he ¢enied ever having She spoke to him by Mr. Halsey, improper intercourse with Mra. Halsey, but admitted that he was @ eiacere friend of her’s, who would be willing to advance her mo- ney whenevor sho needed It, Failing in obtaining the ae- aired in‘ormation, Mra. Deane returned to New York, sick | ‘and diheartened at the gloomy proepect that presented ‘iteclf. a> gave herseif vp io the most gioomy fore- nd would not be comforted, On Friday and Sat- urday the search war continued with no better success then that which attended Toursday’s effort. Deare, another of the miesing lady’s brothers, went to Philadolphia, hoping to find her there, but in van. No trace of her Could be discovered. At fast the detectives Terorted to the ruse of putting an advertisement in the Personal column of the Heksrn, which read as follows:— If Fannie A. will send her address to the Brooklyn Post office phe will hear from a friend, AA . But even this had not the desired effect, and ¢29 officers ‘were about giving the case up in despair, when the para- eer pubbshed in yesterday's fraaLy fey wher eyo. Gescription of the boy tound pear Fort Hiutiton correeponded exactly with vhat of the missing woman, ‘Having 2o doubt whatever of tne identity, they proceeded to act accordingly. The marie of violence found upon the petson of deceazed seomed to lend to suspicion that foul ploy had been uss, ana upov deliberation it was J9- termined to arrest Mr. Halsty and afr. Wella uni tac ~matter should be fully iavestigatod by the Coroner. Tue arrests were made yesterday forcnoon, aad the prisoners were lodged in the office of the Deputy Superintendent. About noon the officials, ia company with Mr, Halsey, started for Fort Hamitoa, for the purpose of view- ig the body and proving its identity beyoud matter of doubt. The moment Mr. Halsey saw the corpse he recognized the weil known features of hia wifo, and wept bitterly at the sickening spectacle. The object of the detectives having beon accompliahed, they retraced their eteps to New York, and placed their prisoner in con- finement to await the result of tho investigation. Subse. quently Mergers. Devoe and Sampson paid a visit to the pri- sover’s rooms, in Twelfth street, and made a thorough gearch of the premises. In a wrjting desk, belonging to tho prisouer, was found several pawn tickets for bis wife's clothing, and also the following letter of authority written deceased :— aoe Nrw York, March 21, 1859, 7 Mccoy suthorize Mr Hae husband, to pledg I hereby au! ze . joy, my huebank pl je umy dresses, &c. % F. D. HALSE Deane was much affected on hearing of the arrest of her son-in-law, but soon composed herself and gave tho offlcors a detailed account of the movements of Mr, Halsey and her deceazed duvghter for some prior ‘to the disappearance of tne iutwr,on Wednesday last, ‘wiuch ran as follows: MRS.
