It eeems ‘@imont inclined to mourn over its victory. It says:— Mr. Letcher will be elected by a much smaller majority ‘than that which confirmei the democratic trin; of 1855, The aggregate vote of the State will be foufd com. paratively small. Indeed, ina number of countles tue entire vote polled ia less than two.tnirds of whe vot of four years ago. Concresmmen Pronanty Exgcrep in Vincinta.—From tho mesger and unreliable returns which have been received of the Virginia elestion, it 1s almost impossible to arrive ‘et a satisfactory conclusion in regard to the result in the Congressional districts. From the appearance of the Agures, however, at the present timo, the following mem- ‘ders of Congress have been chosen:— Dist. 1—Musocoe R, H. Garnett, re elected; bo cpsctttion: 2—Jobn 8. Martin, , Waxes Wit Tae = Nermnas] Go?—The decided stand taken by the leaders of the black republican party in most of the Northern States against the Massachusetts constitutional amendment, is opening the eyes of the yet hopeful members of the American organization toa fall sense of weir position, and they are becoming convinced that they cannot consistently with their principles any fonger act the part of bob to the tail of the republican kite, ‘Thus far the latter party have managed to win the a(fec- ious of their Know Nothing brethren and secure their aid by aspecies of deception in regard to their true de- eigus. But the late movement in Massachusetts has forced them to drop the covering, and their objects and inten- tions have become fully revealed. They show that they ever entertained a single sentiment in common with the main objects of the American party. They have scoffed at the idea of ‘Americans ruling America,” and laughed to scorn the much cherished twenty-one years residence principle of the dark lanternites; and even the poor boon -of adding two years to the time already established by law to milfke the foreigner qualified to vote and hold office, is pow openly repudiated, and the leading black republicans declare they can hold no fellowship with a party that ‘would advocate such a change. The republicans, after baving made the Know Nothings a stepping-stone to power, now cast them off, and pitch their principles to the dogs. Where now are the Americans to go? The only opening -we can sec for them is in # grand national cop- servative, party, material for which is fast gathering, where they might assist in putting down niggerism and disunion sentiments, both North and South. Drcuxes.—Hon. Humphrey Marshall, Know Nothing representative in the last Congress from the Seventh dis- trict of Kentucky, declines a renomination, giving as a his cherished purpose to retire from public affairs. OrrosmoN TO THE SLAVE TRADE MovEMENT-A mecting Of thé inhabitants of Vicksburg and the adjacent counties f Mississippi was held in that city on the 2ist inst., to give expression in opposition tothe sentiments enunciated by the Southern Convention in reference to the re-open- ing of the African slave trade. The Vicksburg Whig ays that the meeting far surpassed in order, intelligence and ability the Southern Convention which met there two ‘weeks previous, and that the hall never contained go large -® gathering during the holding of the Convention as it did on the occasion of this meeting. The assembly was ad- ~dressed by a number of distinguished individuals, and the enthusiasm which was manifested plainly showed that ‘the popular heart was with the conservative cause, in favor of maintaining the laws of the land and respecting the rights of humanity, as wellas against the introduction +of “Guinea miggera”’ to reduce the price of labor. Th following are two of the resolutions which were passed :— Resolved, That this meeting decidedly deplores and dis- es of the propostion to re-open the African slave trade, as pede, ht forward in the Southern Convention, and this meeting cannot but apprehend the most in- jurious coosequences to the South and to the Union from tho movements now in progrees for the avowed purpose of bringing about a renewal of said trade. Reaolved, That in the judgment of this meeting it i+ wholly impractisable to eifect the repeal of the laws pro- hibitory.of the African slave trade, and that if even such repeal could be effected, without any serious agitation of the public mind in connection therewith, the re-opening of said trade would not only be undesirable, but be deeply ruinous to the Southern of the confederacy. GREELEY ON THE STUMP IN KANSAS—SEWARD’S MANIFRSTO.— ‘The St, Louis Republican says that Greeley was in Wyan- dotte, Kansas, on the 16th of May, on his way to the Os- sawattomie Convention, where he assisted in inaugurating the black republican party. While at Wyandotte, says the Republican, he told the people of that city in a speech, that William H. Seward had said that there was an irreprressible conflict between slave labor and free labor; that although the question was set- tled in Kansas in favor of its being a free State, when ad- mitted into the Union, yet the question was not settled, ‘nor would it be until all the States were free. He said that¢his conflict would go on until it penetrated the heart of the cotton States. A PLANK IN THE RePuBLICAN PLATFORM.—The Territorial Convention which met at Ossawattomie on the 18th of May -to inaugurate the republican party of Kansas, put the fol- lowing plank in their platform:— Bl ir That we test any action whit ‘Dut the adopted citizen Ncloe. graaiee politcal di Tees ethan those now imposed by the naturalization laws of the United States. ‘Will the American organization endorse this, and con- tinue to act with the black republicans + ‘Tae Oprosrmion ix Viroisia—“‘Sam’? Woxe Ur.—The Richmond Enquirer, referring to the recent election in ‘Virginie, says:— ‘The opposition have shown an organization so thorough and efhbens i bringing their whole strength to the polls as cbvia hardly be recognized as the result of a few montbs’ exertion. We are well convinced that, to a large extent, and especially in the cities, the Know No- thing organization has beet preserved among the initiated, d only concealed from those candidates and voters mee would shrink from the ritual. fhe probability, at least, is very strong that Sam is not yet dead. . {From the Panama Suues! i ne Bt e 7 ‘We cannot tell when the custom of oa Tine Bri- tannic phd vessels of war in smuggling specie on the coast of Mexico originated, but we re ahd To poke is high time to put a stop to the convenient for the merchants and eeciabin ree to the 4 officer and commander, but it is highly discreditable to the nation; and we cannot imagine upon what principle of morality or policy it is allowed to be carried on.
