THE OBSEQUIES OF GEORGE WASHINGTON DOANE, D.D., L.L.D., BISHOP OF NEW JER- SEY. On Saturday the last sad honors to this illustrious churchman were performed, in the presence of a large concourse of people, and assisted by the leading clergy of this and the surrounding States. ‘The morning was unusually bright and warm, and the day verified the promise that was held out at early dawn. ‘The cars of the New Jorecy Railroad were crowded with the clergy and citizens of New York and environs, and at every station along the route the nurabers increased. ‘Tho body laid at Riverside, the residence of the late Bishop, beautifully situated on the banks of the Delaware river, in the town of Burlington. About two o'clock the solemn cortege began to form, and moved in the following order:— Tnion.— ORDER OF PROCESSION. Sexton and Undertakers Curate of St. Mary's Church. Officiating Preaby ters. Acting Rector, Professors and other Teachers, Theol-g'cal fee ”Alumui and Students of Barlington Coi- lege, ‘Treasurer of the Diocess and Curator Of the Institutions, Principal and Family of St. Mary’ ‘a Hall, Parishioners and other Frien is. ‘The coffin was covered with fine purple cloth, Loveag 2d ‘With gilt pails, on the lid im bas relief a larce cross; pall was of purple and white satin, the whole surm: —H: with a crozier veiled in crape and a wreath of pale purple flowers. The clergy, an immense number, were all in fall canonicals; their white surplices gave 'a peculiarly solemn air to the proceasion, in contrast with the deep mourning of the sorrowing maidens of St. Mary’s Hall, whose deep affliction showed how much their late Precep: tor was belor ed. The hong, stately cavalcade wound its way slowly along the banks of the river to Wood street, and thence to the pretty church of S:. Mary’s, nestled in ‘a bower of evergreens and the lighter eal foliage pe- culiar to this season, leaving its high and graceful steeple alone visible. Every house, every shutter along the Toute was closed, and pieces and festcons of crape appear- ed everywhere; the streets were as still as midnight, save the ep sound of the death bell atintervais; nature seemed ; the procession seemed to pase through a deserted city; tcarcely an eye rested upon <s ull iter. rived at the church, where thousands were in waiting, and every square foot of ground was occupied. The corpse ‘was received at the portal of thechurch by Bishop Potter of a So map a of Vermont, and — South: ¢ pulpit, galleries, organ, {cc , were draped ‘with purple cloth and festoons of crape; at the back of the communion table, in large serarhs vi ag apd purple ground, were the words ‘Blemed are the dead who die in the Lord, for they rest from their labors.” The service of the burial of the dead of , the Episcopalian church was proceeded with. The psalm Domine refugium was sung by the choir—leader, E. Allen, Faq., Professor of Music, and leader of the choir of St! Mary’s. Bishop Southgate read the lesson, 1 Cor. 15th chap 20uli verse: “Now is Christ risen from the dead and become the firat fruits of them that slept,”’ &c. The committal to the grave was read by Bishop Hopkins, and the anthem was chanted by the wile of the clergy, and concluded by Bishop Potter. The Lord’s Prayer was spoken by the crowd in ® most impressive manner, and the prolonged and fervent “Amen,” as it went from mouth to mouth, seemed to die away like a distantecho. As the proceseion passed by the grave to take the !sst look, many were un- usually affected—the sobs of tho assemblage were loud and prolonged—many ladies, overcome by their feelings, fainted, and the moistened eye of the sterner sex shows how deeply they were affected. ‘The coffin was lowered into s mahogany case, on the lid of which was asmall gilt plate bearing the following in- ecription:—“The Right Reverend George Washington Doane, D.D., L. L. D., Bishop of New Jersey; born 27th May, 1799; died 27th April, 1859.”” Amongst the clergy present hs recognized the Rey. Dr. Johngon, the Rey. Mr. Tuttle, the Rev. Dr. Berrian, the Rev. Dr. ’ Van Kleek, the Rev. Mr. wW. . Farrington, the Rev. Dr. Ducachet, the Rey. Mr. C. F. Hopham, Rev. Mr. Holiowell, Rey. Mr. Williams, the Rey. Mr. Shackleford, tho Rev. Mr. Canfleld, the Rev. Dr. Roe, the Rey. Mr. Stansbury, and many others. The studente of Burlington College, an institution found- ¢ by the Bishop in 1846, unanimously resotved that in the death of their patron tho commun'ty at large, but more particularly themscives, had suffered an irre: Parable lose. As President of their college he was kind and forbearing; as their Bishop, he was untiring in his efforts to direct their footsseps in “the narrow path,” Offering to them all a bright example of a Christian, a scholar, and @ gentleman. It was resolved that they should attend h.s fuoers! in a body, and wear the badge of mourning for thirty days. Any one who witnessed the ecene at the grave can testify to the love that the Bishop must have created in his Ao unusually farge number of poor and aged people were present, whose sorrow was unfeigned, and who spoke of him as a benefactor whowe loss will ve severely felt. In learning he was surpaseed by few; mavy of his class, he was fertile in suggestion but in. capable in dewil. Large sums of money passed through his hands, but his benevolence and want of management cavsed bitn serious embarrassment. Hie friends, knowing § hy purity of bis intentions, often bad to assist him, and it u regretted that one of his exalted position and ate ttainments should lack ia moderation, 20 neces- Gary a characteristic.
