Exchange closed firm at 110 for sterling and 5,10 a 5.1234 for francs, but the business cove was light. There is nothing new in the money market. Tho principal event of the day in the stock market was the performance of a very ingenious manmuvre by the bear party. Some twenty-five hundred shares of Central, cash stock, were obtained by the beara, and sold, at the morning bosrd, with fino dramatic effect, by two leading brokers, It is said that the performance was quite natural on the part of the actors. The story given out was that the stock had been under hypothocation, which is quite likely. The effect of the sale, to-day, was tocheck the advancing tendency of the market, which was what the bears desired. They will discover, in all probability, as soon as they attempt to cover their ehorts, that ruses of this kind, however effective at first, are apt to recoil with damaging eflect. The general market showed a tendency tosympatbize with Central, though there was a good demand for government stocks and bonds, aud Western stocks were steady.
